Viva Puerto Rico

On September 20th, Hurricane Maria made her appearance on ‘la isla encantado’ as a powerful Category 4 hurricane with winds of 150 mph, destructing everything in it’s path. Homes were reduced to splintered heaps of wood and crumbling concrete, streets were turned into rivers of churning brown water and left the island without power. Maria was the strongest storm to strike Puerto Rico in more than 80 years. Airports in San Juan, Aguadilla and Ponce were shut down and a curfew implemented from 6 pm to 6 am as flash- flood alarms resonated all day in San Juan.

The frantic calls begin to relatives and loved ones for a source of relief as I’m immersed in the trendy catastrophic news. Only pre-recorded voice mails respond, other times an interrupted tone. Almost two weeks after the storm abated, most of the residents still lack access to electricity and clean water. It is a trying task to seek delivery of a large quantity of items. It is an even greater task to secure a recipient on the island. However, on October 15th I form a fundraiser, ‘DC 4 Puerto Rico.’ An enormous support of family, friends and passing pedestrians offer their words of encouragement while unloading bags of rice, cans of beans, diapers, medicine, first aid kits, toiletries, water, flash lights and hope. The sweet and spicy sound of salsa music greets us in the background, as if it offering thanks on behalf of Puerto Ricans. Local Dominican Dj’s pull up by the truck load as they offer their help to transport the cases of donated water. A passerby shares his story of his recent honeymoon in Puerto Rico, while another sheds a tear describing the anguishing feeling of not knowing if his mother has survived.
