Have you ever planted something before? Well if you have or haven’t, I have and now I actually love gardening, whether it’s a vegetable, fruit, or flower. My late Godmother, Tanya Ward, showed me the joys of gardening. She instilled in me the desire to grow many different types of plants. She helped change this inside loving girl into one who enjoys the outdoors.
There was this one specific day we had went to home depot, meanwhile she was looking for weed killer, while I on the other hand was looking for the restrooms. Around February of last year I had bought some seeds on sale for .35 cents a pop, I got four different kinds of flowers to plant. I planted them in order from my first favorite flower to my least favorite flower, my first favorite flower is the Goldenrod, Gaillardia, Gloriosa Daisy which is also known as a “Black-eyed Susan” and lastly the Beardtongue. Planting these four flowers had to be the worst experience, only because I didn’t follow the directions but after I actually got the hang of it and started learning and studying my flowers I no longer needed instructions. It was a horrible experience, but I can say after a while it was a beautiful outcome.
Nevertheless, I can say that the goldenrod is my favorite flower out of my garden collection, but it’s not the biggest out the bunch. Moreover, I planted all my flowers two months before I was supposed to but eventually they sprouted a little bit then started to grow more and more. During the summertime my flowers were fully in bloom, I learned that Goldenrod blooms yellow and is more attracted to the sun, the Gloriosa Daisy blooms bright yellow to orange, the Beardtongue blooms pink to white, lastly the Gaillardia is more radiant than the rest and blooms red but can also be
Looking out the window, I spotted my grandmother planting beautiful orchids and dahlias. They swayed in the soft spring breeze as she danced around them, sprinkling droplets of water on their petals. From that moment on, my dream had been to create a garden of my own. The next Saturday, instead of going to the market, I bought seeds, a shovel, watering can, and soil. When I reached home, I started right away on my garden. It was behind the house in a sunny place. About an hour passed and my flowers were all planted. I called my new garden “Ted Myles’ Garden of Smiles”. That was a pretty clever name, huh? After waiting for a few months, I learned my lesson. Never plant in a super sunny spot. I found this out in a very sad way. My flowers never grew. The seeds just sat there under the ground. I watered them, fertilized the soil, watered them again, and yet they still sat there in the soil, still as a statue. But I kept trying, planting seed after seed, determined to receive just a glimpse of green appear over the soil. Finally, a month later, my tulips grew. I took great care of them, making sure they didn’t die, but everything must die
Once a seed, a flower stands tall, beautiful and proud of what it is. Halloway has shown supreme character growth in this novel, showing that anyone can and eventually will overcome their fears and doubts. With time, care, and perseverance, even the most stubborn seed will blossom.
Flowers are incredibly important, especially in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. There are three main flowers pointed out in the course of the whole story. There are Miss Maudie’s azaleas, Mrs Dubose’s camellias, and Mayella Ewell’s geraniums. Each bloom was assigned in this way solely for the relation towards their corresponding characters. In “The Flowers,” by Alice Walker, the flowers are used throughout the story to symbolize the beauty and naivety of childhood. In the beginning of the story the author shows the main character Myop walking down a path along the fence of her farm. Myop sees “an armful of strange blue flowers with velvety ridges…” The flowers are bright and colorful, reminding the reader of an innocent type of beauty often associated with them. This suggests the flowers were inserted in the story by Walker to reveal how young and innocent Myop appears to be. Later in the story, after Myop had discovered the dead body of a man who seemed to have been hung “Myop laid down her flowers,”. As Myop put down the flowers she was also putting down the last of her innocence.

While the appearance of calla lilies did not create the same frenzy as tulips, they nevertheless were impactful on flower trends. The calla lily itself could have more specific meanings. Being a white flower some considered it bad luck to have in the home or to bring to a hospital as they were used at funerals and during Easter celebration in church displays. The calla lily was known before the 1920s and was therefore included in the Victorian language of flowers, though its popularity did not peak until later. A calla lily was used to symbolize “magnificent beauty” to the Victorians but would reinvent itself in the decades that followed.
Beauty can be defined in many ways. Though, regardless of its definition, beauty is confined by four characteristics: symmetry, health, vibrancy and complexity. Michael Pollan, in the book The Botany of Desire, examines our role in nature. Pollan sets out to discovery why the most beautiful flowers have manipulated animals into propagating its genes. Most people believe that humans are the sole domesticators of nature, although, beauty in some sense has domesticated us by making us select what we perceive as beautiful. In flowers, for example, the most attractive ones insure their survival and reproductive success; therefore the tulip has domesticated us in the same way by insuring its reproduction. Whether it is beauty or instinct humans have toward flowers they have nevertheless domesticated us.
