The croaky roar of the engine pierces the surrounding as motors come alive. The roar softens to a soothing purr, as the aircraft begins to stabilise and cruise through Jakarta’s sky. The outline of the bustling city can only barely be traced out, shrouded in a blanket of pillowy, white clouds that resemble soft balls of cotton. Separated only by a tiny porthole, migratory birds flock some distance below the aircraft, maneuvering skilfully through the sky. The city looks tiny from thousands of feet above; buildings, people and landmarks are mere specks of colour that almost blend together to form the messiest piece of abstract art. Meanwhile, the budding lad standing opposite her, who had been doused with an excessive amount of cologne and glaring inexperience, struggles with even the simplest orders. More often than not, he disturbs everyone and everything in his way with constant clinks of glass bottles. The imminent glares and death stares from behind the spectacles of an aged man, and a teenage boy with headphones resting on his neck become a testament to this rookie’s clumsy nature. Outside, the earliest signs of rain begin to show. Countless droplets start to pitter-patter against the windows of the aeroplane, rapidly culminating into fists pounding against stone-hard walls. Much like a hectic chaos of cars in a drive-through line during rush hour, they come and go quickly. Dim lights - and a brief beep - that notify passengers to fasten their seat belts are triggered on every row around the plane, shortly followed by a hastened announcement over the intercom. “Ladies and gentlemen, we are now crossing a zone of turbulence. Please return to your seats and keep your seat belts fastened. Thank you.” The voice of the flight attendant boomed. The plane, a dwarf in comparison, charged through gangs of clouds that stretched out like a veil to hide the sky.
