Located in the province North Holland in western Netherlands, just 2 meters below sea level, Amsterdam boasts a very enjoyable climate throughout the summer with a cool wind blowing off the North Sea. The average high in the summer is only 71.8 °F with only an average of 2.5 days reaching 86 °F or higher. In the winter, those tourists who enjoy imagining what the North Pole may feel like would enjoy the chilly temperatures. In these winter months, typically October through March, with January being the coldest, the days are damp and cold due to little rainfall.
Amsterdam is intensely urbanized, the population being 800,000 within the city. 12% of the city area, 136.3 miles, is made up of natural reserves and parks. The rest of the city is densly populated between the many canals and historical monuments. The large numbers of canals running through the streets have deemed Amsterdam the “Venice of the North”. Although many canals have existed over the years, many have been paved over and turned into streets. Now a tourist attraction, the canals originally served the purposes of defense, transportation, and water management for the city’s inhabitants.

This neighborhood has become a wonderful attraction for tourists. It is a series of a network of roads and alleys containing several hundred small, one-room apartments that are rented by sex workers who provide services from behind a window or glass door, typically illuminated with red lights.

New Amsterdam became New York and changed hands from the Dutch to the English. But it is not only Dutch place names and styles of architecture scattered across the five boroughs and all of the Empire State that beat witness to this moment in history. The values of openness, tolerance, liberalism and engagement with the world remain the hallmarks of New York, city and state alike. They have made it one of the economic, intellectual and cultural centers of the
The Chinatown neighborhood has different restaurants, including a Korean and numerous Chinese restaurants. The Chinatown neighborhood has many gift stores, cosmetics stores, ice cream stores, and bakery. As Harry Kiang’s Chicago’s Chinatown points out, “Tourists shop for oriental gifts or groceries or enjoy Chinese food; along Wentworth Avenue between 22nd and 24th Streets there are at least 30 Chinese restaurants. Printers and bakeries are found in the commercial areas along Wentworth Avenue and Cermak Road” (Encyclopedia of Chicago). Many visitors came to the Chinatown neighborhood to visit the neighborhood and try the Chinese foods because it has the authentic Chinese food in the Chinese restaurants. Since many people came to the Chinatown and consumed in the neighborhood’s shops, the consumption promoted the local commercial development and increasing the economic growth. Therefore, the residents are very happy to have the shops and appeal to the
From the piece of artwork “Rain at the Auvers”. I can see roofs of houses that are tucked into a valley, trees hiding the town, black birds, clouds upon the horizon, hills, vegetation, a dark stormy sky and rain.
At the turn of the 20th century, a new style of modern architecture was formed through the development of new building types, materials, and construction techniques from the 2nd Industrial Revolution. With modern inventions and advancements in technology came a shift in the working environment of the industrial fields, for example unsatisfactory working conditions due to long hours in a dark and unclean atmosphere. Designers J.A. Brinkman and L.C. Van der Vlugt embarked on the new ideology of developing a better working experience through the architectural design of a utilitarian space. The Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam became an icon of modern architecture by fashioning a design relationship between functionalism and progressivism to generate a solution to the poor working environments by implementing light, air, and space with the use of new structural methods and materials all while designing for the purpose of the building.
Perhaps the vast array of seasons and weather patterns hold the town to a unique appeal. In the fall, the crisp and cool breeze wafts through the fallen leaves, blanketing the lawns and streets in a warm, orange hue. In the winter, icy gusts chill the terrain, followed by the gentle fall of snowflakes. With time, the town is coated in
But these contrived differences give rise to esthetic difficulties too. Because inherent differences—those that come from genuinely differing uses—are lacking among the buildings and their settings, the contrivances repre...
Building from my background of art and architecture, I have developed an understanding for both creativity and the technical. Through the years, the analysis of artworks evolved my ability to look closer at elements of art to find the cultural influences and perception of the artist. I consider the city itself to be a living piece of art, which can be broken down into comprehensible list of elements similar to those used in analyzing artworks. In recent years, the architectural classes have offered me a more technical way to view the city and individual buildings. Learning about the int...
Receiving money to perform sexual actions has become either a lifestyle choice or a hostile option for the female prostitutes in the Netherlands, particularly in the city of Amsterdam. The participants involved in the legalized policy of prostitution are subjected to ambiguous impacts which involve social, political, health, and economic divisions. Since prostitution was legalized as of the year 2000, Amsterdam has seen a decline in criminal activity, allowing workers an increase in autonomy, and provides better labor conditions. (Cruz, & Iterson, 2013). ). The legalization of prostitution may have aided some of these women from escaping entrapment from pimps or has helped them into becoming independent women. An estimated 20,000 prostitutes are located in the Netherlands, 40% of the prostitutes that work in the city of Amsterdam occupy the 370 available windows, if not more, and clubs surrounding the red light district. (Cruz, & Iterson, 2013). The red light district in Amsterdam is a representation of the freedom that the city has to offer for the natives and tourists that explore their curiosity with experimental and recreational activities. However, while the surface may project a false sense of peacefulness, there is still a black market that condones itself to the trafficking of women and illicit revenues. (Vanderstok, 2010). Nonetheless there is an extensive possibility on the areas of research for issues of female prostitution in the Netherlands. The forefront for this research will be based on the types of female sex workers and the concern on the level of protection the sex workers are entitled to since the legalization of prostitution.

During the last century Copenhagen has seen major changes in the physical construct of the city but who was involved and what changes have occurred? When did these changes occur? Where were the main areas of development? Why was this change needed? And also, was it a successful development? Main case studies for this discussion include Copenhagen’s post-war master plan for it’s city looking at how it seamless integrated its transport systems, pedestrian walkways and businesses along with housing and zooming in further to the Ørestad district and its development which includes various architecture projects by practices such as BIG. By beginning to find answers to these questions through different sources and analysing them not only through words but also by illustrations and diagrams, an understanding of Copenhagen’s development can be begun to be made. Before these questions can be answered a step back should be made reflecting Copenhagen’s history.
Dutch people are generally tall with light hair and eyes. They are also very house proud, meaning they keep their houses well-kept and tidy. Most people live in the cities, which are very well urbanized. Christianity is the main religion, split between Protestants and Catholic Faiths. Although, many people in Netherlands have no religion. Many Dutch spend their free time alone with family or tending their gardens. Cafes are also an important part of the Dutch lifestyle, with either a brown or white café. Brown cafes are older and cozier, while white cafes are modern. Dutch are also the main producers of cheese! They are very fond of cheese, with their main kinds being either Gouda or Edam. Six major types of cheese are produced by the Dutch and exported around the world. So without Netherlands, there would be no cheese. The arts have a large role in Dutch culture. Painting is a huge part of Dutch history and culture. The paintings produced in the Golden Age of Netherlands are cherished around the world. Music is also a part of culture the Dutch are fond of. Musicians are regularly playing on the streets, and many families have one or more members who play an instrument. “The Netherlands has produced many talented musicians. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam and the Residentie Orchestra in The Hague are two of the finest ensembles in the world.” This just goes to show how arts has been a main part of Dutch life and

If you could give your heart to a city, which city would you choose? The city of Vienna captured my soul and my heart belongs to it. It is a serious-looking city, full of right angles and old historical streets. It screams majestic, and you can almost see the phantoms from eras past travelling through the air in gorgeous gowns . Vienna is worth a visit for her face and culture is as old as Europe herself— from her cuisine, street performances, and architecture.
