For my health career, I decided to research information relating to a career in dentistry. One reason I decided to research this career trek was because although the category doers, which is the category dentistry is listed under, was not my highest scoring group, it was my second highest scoring category. Another reason I decided to look into dentistry as a health career is because I may be interested in pursuing orthodontics as a future career. In order to be a dentist, you have to be able to diagnose and treat issues relating to patients teeth, gums, and areas of the mouth. Also, dentists give advice to patients about how they can take proper care of their teeth, gums, and make proper diet decisions that may affect that patient's oral health. …show more content…

Although most dentists are general practitioners, dentists also have the option to specialize in 9 specialty areas such as Orthodontists, Endodontists, and Periodontists. In order to become a dentist, you have to apply to a dental school. These dental schools require certain science courses to be taken prior to application. Because of this, many students decide to major in biology to increase their chances of being accepted to dental school. However, before students can apply to dental school, they have to take the Dental Admission Test junior year of college. While at dental school, a student usually takes coursework in subjects such as anatomy, periodontics, and radiology. Students may also take part in a clinical experience, where students work directly with patients while supervised by licensed dentists.
