There was a secret battle she was handling alone. Something she didn’t want anyone else to find out about. At the age of 11 Lovato had also started cutting herself in order to gain a handle on her emotions. Because she was trying to hold everything in and continue life like there was no problem. She also developed a substance abuse problem. Once in the rehab psychologists identified that she was suffering from bulimia nervosa. Bulimia nervosa is identified by weight fluctuations with in or above normal ranges. This is what made it so easy for Lovato to hide from her family and friends. A U.S national institute of mental health study reported that Americans met the standard for anorexia; studies showed 1 percent for bulimia, and 2.8 percent for binge-eating disorders. It was later discovered at the treatment center that Lovato was diagnosed with bipolar disorder as well. Signs and side effects of bulimia fixate on the distraction with weight and body
Although Brandy does not go on direct binges, she does pig out on candy and related junk food occasionally. Second, she tries to eat healthy and has defaulted to purging in order to stay skinny. Therefore, Brandy meets the second condition on the DSM-5 checklist for bulimia nervosa: “inappropriate behavior in order to prevent weight gain” (Comer, 2013, p.320). Nonetheless, instead of her symptoms lasting longer than a week, the side-effects of her condition continue endlessly. Lastly, all the signs and symptoms negatively impact Brandy’s self-esteem and self-concept. One could say the entire problem has an “undue influence of weight or shape on self-evaluation” (Comer, 2013, p.320). For example, Brandy believes no one wants to be around her because they are disgusted by her weight and overall appearance. Therefore, she shuts herself off from her friends and society. Rowling and Rowling wrote back, ending up as penpals and continue to be to this day. Lynch states that Rowling was the one who helped her through the disorder, though her director on set for Harry Potter helped her also. She eventually realized, with the help of family and friends, that she didn’t need to be extremely skinny to look wonderful and she went back to eating healthy again to this day. She grew up around a mother and a grandmother with bulimia and states that it didn’t make it easy for her. “Being around someone who is 80 pounds and had an active eating disorder… it’s hard to grow up like that.” Demi had said to American Way. She also went through drug and alcohol addictions along with the bulimia. She has said several times in interviews that she didn’t think that she would make it to 21 years. In January 2013 Demi had checked into a sober house and stayed there for about a
This explains the fake masks that people put on for social media, when really it is not like that in their life behind closed doors. In this case she isn’t as happy and confident as she may seem in her posts. There are also unrealistic body and appearance expectations that people, especially teens feel as though they have to live up to, so they can portray the perfect life of celebrities and Instagram models. This includes the common problems of anorexia and bulimia which he briefly
Marya Hornbacher was born on April 4th, 1974, her parents were well-known actors and directors in Walnut Creek, California. She led a chaotic childhood, consisting of a major move to Minnesota, an anxiety disorder, and most of all, perfectionism everywhere she turned, “I always felt there was an expectation that I would do one of two things: be great at something, or go crazy and become a total failure. There is no middle ground where I come from,” (Hornbacher, 281). Marya developed bulimia when she was nine years old, and when she moved away to attending boarding school at fifteen, she became anorexic. Her parents saw it as a phase and Marya did not go into treatment for another seven years, since then, she has had several relapses. Marya wrote her ...
...d the gravity of her situation. Portia De Rossi met the three criteria for an anorexia nervosa disorder binge-eating type at the age of 25. Her restrictive food intake through her diets impeded her from having a healthy body weight. As a result she was 85% less than her normal body weight. She also had an immense fear of gaining weight and recurred to purging and excessive exercise. Portia viewed herself to be “fat” even though she was already underweight due to her distorted point of view on body image and weight; all that matter to her was to be thin. Despite having symptoms that could also diagnose her with bulimia nervosa, there was still no clear proof she fulfilled all the criteria for this disorder. However, what clearly differentiated her from being diagnosed with bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa was her low weight which was below 85% of normal weight.

At the end of his performance he cried, but many wonder why in the world he was crying for. His ‘Beliebers’, which are his fans like myself explained by stating simply ‘After 3 years of media torture, finally coming back, and receiving a standing ovation.’ Like man I’d cry too to the fact that everyone is on good terms with me and everyone meaning the world after all the things I did. The behavioral perspective focuses on how prior experiences impact later experiences. As mentioned before Lovato’s unhealthy eating habits caused her weight gain which caused the bullying at the young age of 8 (Fox News). The prior experience of bullying led her to find new ways to lose weight. This caused her to become bulimic and anorexic. Lovato quickly became depressed. By age 11 she began self-harm by cutting her wrists. Lovato’s father was an alcoholic. In a 2015 interview with People Magazine Lovato shares, "My father had schizophrenia and bipolar disorder as well, and I watched him live a very unfortunate life because of the lack of access to treatment” (Weisensee). His alcoholism led to the decline of being a positive role model for his daughter. Behaviorism points to no role model in her childhood as another prior experience that may have led to her illness. Lovato modeled her own sporadic behavior after her father. She had no one to look up to in her family therefore no one was there to catch her before she spiraled out of control. Some psychologists would argue Lovato learned the behavior of her father and his bipolar disorder and then tried to mimic the behavior. The learned behavior would be explained by the concept of observational learning. For example, Lovato observed her dad drink a beer after a stressful day so when she experienced tough days she turned to
A couple of years after she got out of rehab, MTV filmed a short documentary of Lovato’s mental health issues called “Demi Lovato: Stay Strong”. Throughout the film, Lovato describes her life as a daily battle to stay healthy. Soon after rehab, she resumed her singing career and was extremely nervous about performing again. However at a meet and greet before Lovato performed, a young girl praised Lovato for her bravery and courage and said that Lovato had encouraged her to not wear her wig that night. Demi Lovato is a prime example of an encouraging role model because she has turned her life with bipolar II disorder into a positive message for her

Eating Disorders (EDs) are a series of often life-threatening mental health disorders which are commonly used as coping mechanisms or as ways to mask one’s problems. To be diagnosed with Bulimia Nervosa, the individual must meet a certain criteria. The individual must experience recurrent episodes of binge eating; by eating in a discrete period of time of about 2 hours and eating much more than a typical person would in the same period of time, as well as experiencing a lack of control over the food intake. Demi Lovato reports both of these on multiple occasions, the first being eating an entire batch of cookies, that was meant for her whole family, before they could even get to them (People: Family Mental Health, 2018). The latest being as a result of missing her long-term relationship with Wilmer Valderrama (Youtube,
