I used to believe that acts of courage were only demonstrated by heros; firefighters, police, men and women in the military. Almost 3 years ago, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. One minute life is normal, the next, your whole world is turned upside down. A question that lingered in my mind was, what makes an ordinary person courageous? After facing a life changing event, I learned that courage cannot be measured by the scale of its significance. Courage is often compressed into a single definition, but there isn't truly one individual annotation of the complex word. What makes courage so elaborate, is it’s different meaning to everyone. To someone, courage may be getting out of bed in the morning. While for others, it's public speaking, or skydiving. Courage can be defined merely by a person’s thoughts on the matter, since a definition for the word does not necessarily exist. However, courage is not limited to just actions; Courage is also finding strength in a difficult time. Fear is an aspect that is found in almost every example of courage. It takes courage to be more than just ‘someone with cancer’. To continue living life as normally as possible and attempting to still enjoy it, while battling a life threatening disease. This is what my mom did. She got up every morning, and refused to let cancer define her. She remained strong, and kept our family moving forward. Simply having hope when the future is unknown, and facing the fear of that unknown, takes courage. But most of all, her strength, in a time that was challenging as well as frightening, is what made her courageous. Strength in the face of pain and grief, perseverance through hardship; this is what defines courage. It is what courage means to me. My mom is an inspiration, and her strength gave me
Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. Courage is strength in the face of pain or grief. Throughout the course of World War 2, there were many people who acted in a courageous manner, as portrayed by Markus Zusak in his novel 'The Book Thief'. Weather it was putting their entire life on the line just to save some strangers from possible torture, hiding illegal people in their own houses with the possibility of being killed or smuggling thousands of people out of the Ghettos and into hiding places at the risk of death, there were some extraordinarily courageous humans in World War 2 who not only saved other people lives, but they did it all at
One of the best explanations of courage is the following by Maya Angelou: “One isn’t necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtues with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.” Her explanation summarizes all that courage can lead you to who you are in life. Courage is standing up for what you believe in, despite disapproval, pain, fear, uncertainty, or intimidation. Courage is challenging what is normal. Courage is giving voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. Courage is using whatever power available to educate the world about injustice. Courage is following your heart even when the path is not known. Courage is trying after failing.
Courage is the thing which can be found in a child to an old man. It needs a lot of courage to take out courage from the heart. It is like a brain. It depends on the person, how and when he uses it. This tiny word has the power to convey the whole gesture of a person. According to Harper Lee?s genius ?To Kill a Mockingbird?, Courage is when you know you are licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through it through no matter what.
“Courage - a perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental willingness to endure it.” Courageous people understand the danger that they face when they act how they do. That is what courage is all about. Many historical events occur due to people having the courage to do what they think is right, or because of those who use their courage to do what they want. Having the courage to stand alone in one’s beliefs may be one of the hardest thing a person can do.
It is a very unfortunate fact of life that many people suffer from the scourge of cancer each year. When a family member is diagnosed with cancer, especially when it is incurable, it is painfully difficult for the family and the person who is being diagnosed to cope with the idea. However, it is extremely imperative that they do not lose hope. It is important for them to have courage and to keep fighting because if they give up then they will surely perish. Even when the situation looks bleak, they need to look at the positives and live life as normally as possible, taking in memories and making new ones. If they give up they will not survive. There are many examples of courageous acts in literature. In a very well known novel
Many soldiers of today know what courage is. Courage is doing what is needed to do, not what absolutely must be done. In Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried”, the soldiers were not what one would think of as courageous. The soldiers were courageous in the sense that their courage came from fear of dishonor. The soldiers did what must be done in order to keep their honorable reputation. True courage was not present until the end of the story.
In the movie A Few Good Men, two U.S Marines, Lance Corporal Dawson and Private First Class Downey, are accused of murdering another, weaker, marine by the name of PFC William Santiago. Their orders to perform a “code red” were given under the authority of Colonel Nathan Jessup, their commanding officer. It is up to their lawyer Daniel Kaffee and his group, Liutentent Sam Weinberg and Liutentent Commander Joanne Galloway, to prove that Dawson and Downey were strictly following orders and had no intentions of killing PFC Santiago. Their defense is obedience. However, here in lies the question: “Where does one draw the line between following orders and following one’s own morals?” Two articles, “The Abu Ghraib Prison
Moore defines courage as “resolute doubt,” having the ability, or the the "strength of spirit," to keep going even when defeated. To be strong, one must accept their own mortality. One must accept the reality of death and yet keep fighting to live. Although we are all imprisoned in a world of mortality, we must fight every day to give meaning to our lives. We must live as if we were never going to die!
From a child, I was raised to believe marriage is forever. You deal with your problems and work past them. However, six years ago I realized even with that belief sometimes you must find the courage deep within you to do some “do something”. I believe in times of adversity the courage to do what needs to be done, however scary or hard, is deep within you.
Courage is being fearless and brave in a difficult situation. Louis Mulkey knew what he was doing when he ran into that fire. He knew all the risks involved. But he did it anyways because it was his job, and he showed no fear while doing it. He left behind a distraught basketball team; a team that came together under terrible circumstances. All they had to do was give up after everything they went through. Instead, they showed courage and accomplished what may be the best moment of their lives; winning a state championship.
I can relate to Bod's experience through a visit to the hospital, where I encountered a cancer patient displaying immense courage. Despite undergoing chemotherapy and the prospect of losing her hair, she bravely embraced the treatment, ultimately overcoming the
Courage is a state of mind that enables a person to overcome fear, pain, danger, or hardship. Although different from one another, all aspects of courage involve taking risks.
What is bravery to you? How would you define it? How would you describe your own bravery? This word can be talked about and shown in many different ways. Bravery can be when you go out of your way to do something good for someone or to help them in any way. Being brave can be nothing like being fearless. Some may understand that bravery is being terrified to do something but doing it anyway. You could be scared. This could put yourself or your life in danger. You may have to have some courage and support to do this. Being brave is showing you're willing to go above and beyond for something. You never know when your going to have to step out of your comfort zone and sacrifice something in order to be brave.
What is courage? Courage is the spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, and bravery. Courage to me is bravery, heroic acts, and people that put their life in danger. Many people show acts of courage everyday in the world. You might not know if you are showing courage, unless it is a big act.
Firstly, courage is a quality that includes motivation and thoughts of an action. Without the action, the value of courage can not be raised up. Though the situation is hard to look
