What is Cute?
"Cute" is an aesthetic or action that is considered endearing, pleasing, or charming. Usually we find soft, round, small, delicate things adorable whether it’s something like a puppy or an inanimate object. The reason is simple; its natures way of making sure we take care of our helpless offspring that depend on us for years, in other words humans finding things adorable is essential to our species survival. Any time we see something resembling or having baby like features dopamine is released and we immediately dote over the source of cute. Just as stated before; people find qualities found in babies cute, this is even true for people who don’t necessarily like children. But what about babies do people find so appealing that they decide to have them? It certainly isn't the crying, constant care, or the smelly dippers. The truth is in the odd proportion that babies have; the big round head with even bigger eyes, and the small squishy body with even smaller and squishier limbs attached to it. In short humans are drawn to big eyes, soft round shapes, and small proportion sizes that match up with babies. This aesthetic can be found in both animals and objects alike: stuffed animals, small pets, dolls, cartoons, or anything really. We can make things cuter simply by making it smaller and rounder, for example; which would people be more likely to find charming; a normal horse or a miniature horse? “Giving birth in beauty” starts with two forms (206B). We can either be pregnant in body or soul. When you want to become pregnant with beauty, in body, you seek out a mate who is good and wise. Then you can be pregnant in body and give birth to a child and become immortal by leaving your children behind when you pass away. Being pregnant in soul can happen when you have moderation and justice. Which means having proper order in your home. When a boy, specifically, becomes pregnant in soul he is drawn to beautiful bodies and drawn to beautiful souls. What do little girls do with these dolls? They put on fresh makeup, change there fashionable clothing, and style there long luscious hair. This alone is creating a psychological change in a little girls brain, it is instilling that this is what is customary for a girl to do. Rather than fixing things you are to play princess, along with your easy bake oven. For centuries society has quietly driven a complex into the hearts and minds of young girls, that you have to be pretty to succeed. In our time today you rarely see unattractive; politicians, movie stars, musicians, officials or entertainers. Anybody who is somebody these days has attractive physical qualities.
Seeing a barbie makes me think about all the fun times I had playing with those little toy dolls and the memories of creating my own dream life through Barbie. Humankind has always held a certain fascination for babies. We see a baby and our automatic response is generally one along the lines of “awwe”. New mothers often experience an increase in attention from strangers when going out in public with their new children. The bottom line is we love babies. Their big eyes and general helplessness evokes a certain almost maternal desire in each of us. Aside from the obvious psychological and evolutionary science behind these emotions, infancy is a universally significant time that transcends all cultures. The documentary Babies choses to explore this time by examining four newborns and their mothers in Nambia, Mongolia, the United States, and Japan.
Although, the pictures illustrate that girls 'enjoy dresses ' and pink toys while boys enjoy active play toys, such as balls. Most of the toys in this store would seem to prepare girls to be princess and boys to be athletes. In contrast, there is a miscellaneous section that had gender neutral toys for an age group of kids 3-7; these toys had cooking sets, medical sets, and farming sets. Subsequently, it can be said that some of these gender-neutral toys could be preparing children for roles as farmers, doctors, and chefs. This section of gender-neutral toys seemed to be just randomly placed in the middle of the store, and the only other gender-neutral section seemed to be in the 1-5 age range. I didn’t see a ‘strategy of attraction’ for these gender-neutral toys. For this miscellaneous section, it seemed to be more of the predisposition of a child, for example, a child that may like horses might gravitate towards the gender-neutral farming set. The Target store located at Dallas Highway in Marietta, Georgia, was chosen for the fieldwork assignment. This particular store was selected because of recent renovations to the toy area. The new arrangement of the toy department appears slightly different than traditional organizations of toys in the past. The location of the toys is in direct relation and physical flow from the baby equipment, supplies, and apparel. Toys transition from birth in the infant area initially in terms of age demographics, type of activity, and brand of toy to more obvious gender divisions beginning in the preschool toys. In the toy section for school age children, gender separation is clearly established. Gender divisions become more obvious in this age group according to colors, themes, and character depiction. The girl toys feature pink, purple, and pastel colors. The highlighted décor in the store’s displays and packaging for girls involves embellishments such as pictures of girls, flowers, glitter, and jewels. The boy section portrays color schemes that are primarily in blue, red, yellow, gray, and black. Packaging images are of male children. The sections including educational toys, games, sporting equipment, outdoor play, sound and music, building, puzzles, and arts appear to be more gender neutral although some gender specific items can be identified by color or themes such as princess/fairytale or Ninja Turtle. The configuration of the toys clearly states that color, themes, and character representation are irrelevant to infants and toddlers, while parent’s attitudes about color and gender may be important aspects of unintentional socialization in the maturation of children. The socialization of children is greatly affected by the toys they are exposed to while growing up. Looking through magazines and walking down the aisles of toy stores it is clear that toy companies are supportive of cultural gender roles biases. Toys designed for girls are commonly found in pink boxes; typically these toys involve housework or taking care of children, for example, dolls and easy bake ovens. On the other hand, “boy” toys are found in blue and black boxes, and a lot of them involve construction and cars.
Relevance: I’m sure that many of you have been tempted to buy a puppy while scrolling through the numerous websites online filled with cute pictures of healthy looking puppies.

A person with Barbie Syndrome attempts to emulate the doll’s physical appearance, even though the doll has attainable body proportions (Wall Street Journal). Self-esteem for girls is a sensitive topic, because odds are most girls want to change something about themselves. Whether it is her hair color, skin color, eye color, and even body shape. Some sources say that one culprit is the fictional person Barbie, this is due to her unrealistic body and the fact she’s tall, blonde, and blue eyed. "Girls exposed to Barbie reported lower body esteem and greater desire for a thinner body shape" than those who had been given dolls reflecting larger body types or no dolls at all” (CNN). Its been shown that girls who played with her as kids have this desire to look just like her because society has put this pressure on girls that in order to be pretty you have to be a tall size 2 blonde, this is believed to create an endemic of girls, teens and adolescents with anorexia. When Mattel decided to create these new dolls to help promote a healthy body image for young girls who can’t look like the original Barbie, its made society redefine what it means to be pretty. But, why have we as a society allowed for this toy to define our standards of beauty? First and foremost, gender marketing strategies and gender system’s play a major role in how toys are presented. Toys are usually advertised based on gender. While observing toys in commercials and the stores, male and female toys are displayed based on gender roles. Toys targeting males may come off as violent and aggressive by displaying bulky built action figures or realistic guns. This is the opposite with female toys which give off more of a calming, cleaning and nurturing feeling with their dolls and household toys such as houses, cooking and cleaning toys. The sound effects and voice actors create a stylistic difference between how toys and humans are in animation. Also, this animation shifts from the traditional musical animation where everyone breaks out into a song. Toy Story takes on a buddy-film approach where there is a more bouncy vocal track. It is more like a live action movie’s soundtrack, with the sound adding to the dramatic effect of the dialogue.
Beauty means something different to different kinds of people and cultures. The meaning of beauty is influenced by our environmental surrounding, society, media, peers, culture and experiences. When people think about beauty they think about the physical visual appearance. Actually is “beauty in the eyes of the beholder” (Hungerford, 1878), but perhaps it is more accurate to say that beauty is also in the geography, as cultural ideals of beauty vary drastically by region.
If you were to google the definition of happiness, it will give you an extremely shallow definition of the state of being happy. Happiness is an abstract and intangible emotion that cannot literally be defined. So how can one define it? People use their emotions, feelings, and events in their life to define happiness. Though, the emotions described by each individual will vary because each individual is their own person; therefore, not any one view of happiness will be the same.
The concept of “beauty” is something that everyone feels, thinks, or wants, in order to fit society’s standards. In today’s society, we are often faced with the unrealistic ideals of what beauty is. Due to society’s constant portraying of unrealistic beauty ideals, this reinforces a negative influence upon women’s idea of beauty, resulting in a negative impact in their confidence, and self-esteem, which leads to others, specifically women to be manipulated by society’s corrupted outlook of what beauty is. To add onto this issue, we are constantly surrounded by sources of this negative influence in our everyday lives, including magazines, television, advertisements, and so on. However, women specifically, are more prone to be victims of this negative effect, thus will have more pressure upon themselves to match society’s idea of “beauty,” which includes unrealistic and sometimes unattainable beauty standards. Women especially, can sometimes be so deeply manipulated by society’s unrealistic ideals of what is beautiful, such that it’s possible that they don’t even realize it Furthermore, in order to do so, women often will receive negative impacts rather than positive impacts, such as in their confidence and self-esteem. The negative effects of society’s beauty ideals also lead women to have an overall corrupted idea of what is “beautiful.” Society creates unrealistic ideals of beauty towards women through the media by creating an unrealistic image of what women should look like to be considered beautiful. Men negatively affect women’s idea of beauty by using the unrealistic beauty standards exposed by society which further pressures women to try to fit society’s idea of what is beautiful.
