The ways to show affection are countless. The very first act of it was in Genesis when God forgave Adam and Eve. This was also the first instance of his love. According to Webster’s New World Dictionary, love is “a deep and tender feeling of affection for or attachment or devotion to a person or persons.” It also means “a feeling of brotherhood and good will toward other people.” The word love comes from the Indo-European word leubh-, which created a giant list of other words for it. The derivative “lovely: first meant affectionate and lovable. The modern meaning “beautiful” did not emerge until the thirteenth century. Some synonyms for love are affection, attachment, or infatuation. Affection refers to warm or tender feelings; affection usually is not as deep of a word as love. Webster’s New World Dictionary defines attachment as “connection by ties of affection, attraction, devotion, etc., may …show more content…
Hatred or hate is a strong word to use towards a person; it means to have ill will. Loathing usually means an intense feeling of disgust or abhorrence. To dislike means to not like something or someone, and to have an objection to. Dislike is probably the least hateful of these words. One of the most famous quotes about love is in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 which says, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrong. It rejoices in the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. “ A great example of love would be God’s everlasting love for us. There are many examples of His love for us in the Bible, such as in John 3:16-17, which states that because God loved us, he sacrifices his one and only son so that we may have eternal life. Also, 1 John 4:19 says, “We love each other because he loved us
Love is the intense feeling of deep affection that helps people spirts to endure. In the book Yellow Star, a little girl named Syvia is imprisoned in a ghetto in Lodz with her family. She is 1 out of 12 children to survive the Lodz ghetto because of her family sacrificing everything to keep her alive and safe, in both body and spirit(Doc B). For example, “Mother does not eat her meal/ she gives it to me instead/ She does not say I love you in hugs And kisses/ but her love fills my plate/ And I gobble it up” (Doc A). Later on Syvia risks her life for the love of her sister Dora my seeking outside to bring
Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines love as a strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties. Love is a journey that begins by building a foundation of trust, commitment, and understanding. The speaker is thorough and demanding to the point that the speaker becomes a façade to keep prospective loves away. Without love as the speaker begins to say life becomes pointless.
Socrates’ speech does that. It contains the sides mentioned before, and uniquely views Love from a dynamic perspective. Phaedrus Phaedrus is the first one to give a speech to praise love. He begins his speech with the claim that Love is a primordial god, with no parents.... ...
Love is a powerful emotion that affects everyone at some time in their lives. According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, love is defined as a feeling of strong and constant affection for someone(1). Love can refer to the feelings between a couple in a romantic relationship, or it can refer to the affection one would have with a friend. When love is shown, each person cares about the other. Sometimes, love can be hypnotizing, causing one to do something they would not do normally. In “Gift of Magi” by O Henry and “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe, it shows that love can make one do crazy things.
The two passages that stood out for me, 1 Corinth 13: 8-10 Love never dies. Inspired speech will be over some day; praying in tongues will end; understanding will reach its limit. We know only a portion of the truth, and what we say about God is always incomplete. But when the Complete arrives, our incompletes will be canceled. (Bailey, 2011, p. 348) calls chapter thirteen the “love chapter”.
The word love is usually misused or misinterpreted. There are numerous meanings and definitions to this overly used word. Not many of them make much sense to me. Love is a feeling of complete bliss. Love is something that can’t be touched or bought, but is something that is much better than money and earthly objects. I can stay here and describe love all day long and still have so much more to say about this word days later. Love isn’t a word that should be used lightly, but usually is. I believe that love is the most commonly used, but most understood word ever known
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word “love” first appeared in the year 825. Love was first written and pronounced as “lufu” in Old English. It had many different types of meanings, but the first definition that was put down was ‘That disposition or stated feeling with regard to a person which(arising from recognition of attractive qualities, from instincts of natural relationship, or from sympathy) manifests itself in solicitude for the welfare of the object, and usually also in delight in his or her presence and desire for his or her approval; warm affection, attachment,’ (“Love,” 2017, p. 52). According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, it means ‘to feel love for, cherish, show love to; delight in, approve’ (Harper, n.d.). Another great definition for the word “love” is ‘an intense feeling of deep affection,’ (“Love,” 2017, p. 56). Though these definitions talk of affection towards an object or person, in history the word “love” has been used in very different ways. In the 1950s, the term “make love” was a euphemism for “have sex”(Harper, n.d.). This term was most utilized by teenagers, using love, instead of lust, as a reason to have sex. On the other hand, the word “love” is used as a term in tennis. At the beginning of every game, the words “love all” are said to signify that both opponents start out with the score of zero. Though it is unclear as to when this began, the most
Love is having compassion for others, sharing feelings and your life with another person, as well as, having faith in others and forgiving those we love for the any errs that they may make. Most of all, we must be committed to those we love. Of course, this is only my opinion. No matter how long I try to explain what love is ultimately it is up to you, the reader, to define what love is to you. So let me leave you now with the words of the great Humanist Erich Fromm, "Can anything be learned about the art of love, except by practicing it?"
Love by definition is an emotion explored in philosophy, religion, and literature, often as either romantic love, the fraternal love of others, or the love of God based on the definition found in The Encarta Encyclopedia. As I explored the definition by means of the Internet, books, and articles I noticed the definitions changed quite a bit, but yet had the same basic understanding. The definition I found in The Encarta Encyclopedia was probably the most simple and most basic. It refers to love in the whole aspect, which is Godly, fraternal, and romantic. All in which can only be defined by one word and that it love.
To better understand the concept of "love", lets define the value of love. Love is the most valuable commodity in the world. We all need love just like a fish needs water. Without love, life would not be worth living. With love in our lives, we are empowered beyond belief.
Love could influence or affect people in positive ways by leading them to a healthier lifestyle and to new experiences. For example, they can change their unhealthy, damaging lifestyle due to a romantic relationship. They can be willing to take risks and attempt to chase things that they would not alone. It could lead them to a jubilant life, knowing they are receiving beneficial love and are transmitting healthy love. Although, love could influence or affect people in negative ways. It could lead them to leave or not accept opportunities that could benefit them in the long run, for a certain person. A so-called “friend” can claim to “love” his “friend”, but would lead him to wicked temptations like drug and alcohol abuse. A friend cannot claim to love their friends if they entice them to negative habits or to leave opportunities behind. How “This Ain’t Love” by Bizzle states it— “This ain’t love” (Bizzle, 2017). True love is leading each other to beneficial things that will mold the people within the relationship. 1 Corinthians 15:33 states, “Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company corrupts good morals’” (New Living

First, we need to know what love is in order to identify it. From a biblical point of view, love is defined as, “love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud (Corinthians 13:4)” It goes on to include that love is not selfish, not disrespectful, it forgives, trusts, hopes, and protects. The Four Loves, written by C.S. Lewis, defines love as a focus on another person and accepting him/her completely for who he/she is. It is the unselfish giving of yourself.
