Genres are categories of type of films, categorized in specific styles or subject maters, some genre stay single in a movie and other movies have a mixed range of genres. Uncovering the genre of a movie before viewing would reveal the movies subject matter and suitability. For example a crime/drama movie may start with a drama start but because the movie displays its genre the viewers will know eventually later on the movie will begin to involve crime scenes, what also defines the what genre it is, is the certain stock characters and dramatic situations associated with a specific category, such as a mobster having family issues.
Those to watch movies have their own interest in particular genres, so categorizing it is a simple way to promote the movie to a particular audience. Genre also defines what type of emotional you will get out of the movie, a comedy will be funny so it will make people laugh also usually puts people in a better mood then they was or horror where it will scare people, people find it entertaining to frighten, for some people this mainly an younger audience, to be scared to sleep.
What defines a genre varies, props, locations etc. For example for location, western genre movies would usually have a western type location giving it that western type feel, portraying frontier life in the American West during 1600s to contemporary times. For a musical genre what would define it being that type of movie is the consistency of music performed every now and then, performed music that go with the storyline, sometimes those performing would look into the camera but wouldn’t when it came to filming scenes.
Also genres that are made for a particular amount of viewers at a time like family movies, what defines a family ...

...Exorcist (1973), although it was a possessed girl with a demon controlling but as of the acting people may of found a young girl using such language as taken far. Health – characters don’t eat healthy, they smoke, and they drink? Example movie for this would be the movie “Blow” where there is a major drug use from many drugs; the movie glorifies the drugs at some points which may lead viewers to want to experience the effect.
Genre I will choose and to show what make it that genre will be ‘Crime’, different to film noir so it’s not mistaken, crime movies are more involved in those who are doing the crimes lifestyle and what they go through, how they got into that side of making money. Crime movies usually involve violence, bad language, money and drugs. Cinematography and editing will have to use correctly for the audience to get a depth feel as well as visually.
The horror genre of film captives the frightfulness of individual fear, horror is the only genre that is meant captive the terror of the audience. The horror- the genre has been around well over one hundred- years there has been an extension of different types of horror and how the audience perceives horror. Many would even argue that horror films often reflect the fear of society in that certain time period. The evolution of horror reflects the evolution of society’s fear.
The genre of the film is how we know what kind of film it is. Genre is a French word which literally means type; it shows what category a film comes under. There are certain factors in a genre which will identify it. Things like settings, characters and themes can all be similar in one specific genre.
film. They know that if they go and see this genre of film that they
Friedman, L., Desser, D., Kozloff, S., Nichimson, M., & Prince, S. (2014). An introduction to film genres. New York, London: W.W. Norton & Company.
There are three major types of movies: narrative (a fiction story being told), documentary (nonfiction recording of reality, educating of the audience, or political and social analyses) and experimental
The genres varied from melodramas and biblical epics, to horror films and crime stories. There were films of all kind: non-fictional narrative, documentary ones, mysteries, romances, and comedies, the comedian master Charlie Chaplin.
Film scholars around the world agree that all genres of film are part of the “genre cycle”. This cycle contains four different stages that a specific genre goes through. These stages are: primitive, classic, revisionist, and parody. Each stage that the genre goes through brings something different to that genre’s meaning and what the audience expects. I believe that looking at the horror genre will be the most beneficial since it has clearly gone through each stage.
A very diverse, broad, and extensive industry is the filmmaking industry. However, the unique aspect of the industry is that it is so expansive in all of the different categories and types of movies, but yet each film is individualized. A certain characteristic of a movie may appeal to one person and not another. Such characteristics may not only appeal to an individual but to a certain group of people. Could it be that characteristics of a film appeal to either the male gender or the female gender? Is there a difference in the category of movie that a male chooses as opposed to one that a female chooses? Such questions prove to be very interesting and ponderous. Upon thinking of such questions, I decided to revolve my research paper around the two concepts of movies and gender. My hypothesis for this research paper is “In determining a movie to watch, college-age males choose action and adventure movies while females of the same age choose romance or romantic comedy movies”. I feel that this topic is very interesting because many items today are marketed towards a specific gender. This can be viewed and noticed in such items as clothing, motor vehicles, and certain hobbies. This pattern may just as well carry over into the film industry. If it does, it may be reflected by the category of movie a certain gender selects to watch. Therefore, my thesis is: By used of an observation, a survey, an interview, and a personal history, I will prove that men choose action movies and women choose romance/romantic comedy movies because each gender relates to a different characteristic found in each type of movie.
The genre i have studied is musicals. A musical is a film which has musical performances from the actors to express their feelings. The films from this genre that i studied are 'Singin' In The Rain' (Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, 1952), 'Grease' (Randall Kleiser, 1978) and 'Hairspray'(Adam Shankman, 2007). I studied two characteristics of the musical genre (Breaking Into Song And Dance and The Grande Finale) that are shown in the films studied. The identifying characteristics of 'Breaking Into Song And Dance' and 'The Grande Finale" are always seen in musicals. These characteristics are expected to be in a musical by the audience and ultimately make a musical what we predict it to be, a film that expresses characters feelings through song while
A genre is a type or category of film (or other work of art) that can be easily identified by specific elements of its plot, setting, mise en scène, character types, or style. (Goodykoontz, 2014) The gangster film is a sub-genre of the broader genre of crime film. A genre main objective is to classify the depiction of entertainment. The genre of my movie is a gangster film. My movie I chose was Scarface. Directed by Brian De Palma. An update of the 1932 film, Scarface (1983) follows gangster Tony Montana and his close friend Manny Ray from their trip on the Cuban Boat Lift for refugees to their arrival in Miami. (Scarface, 1983a)
Film scholar and gender theorist Linda Williams begins her article “Film Bodies: Genre, Gender and Excess,” with an anecdote about a dispute between herself and her son, regarding what is considered “gross,” (727) in films. It is this anecdote that invites her readers to understand the motivations and implications of films that fall under the category of “body” genre, namely, horror films, melodramas, (henceforth referred to as “weepies”) and pornography. Williams explains that, in regards to excess, the constant attempts at “determining where to draw the line,” (727) has inspired her and other theorists alike to question the inspirations, motivations, and implications of these “body genre” films. After her own research and consideration, Williams explains that she believes there is “value in thinking about the form, function, and system of seemingly gratuitous excesses in these three genres,” (728) and she will attempt to prove that these films are excessive on purpose, in order to inspire a collective physical effect on the audience that cannot be experienced when watching other genres.
Many people go to the movies. The movies are an escape into a fantasy world. Everyone has a different preference on what kind of movie is the best. Romance, horror, action, and comedy are different types of movies. The kind of movie someone goes to see can give clues to what kind of person they are.
In society today, many people favor both genres. However, in some cases there are some people that are horror junkies and do not care for comedy and on the other hand there are people that cannot handle horror themed situations and settle for comedy. There are many movies and some novels that take horror movies and make fun of them. These film makers or authors typically use comedy to make light of the horror films they chose to make fun of. On average these genres clash, but at the same time can complement each other. Since some people will watch a comedy after a horror films to calm themselves down or watch a comedy first to calm themselves and mentally prepare themselves for a good
Almost everyone has a favorite genre of film, but how everyone defines their favorite genre can differ greatly. Horror is one of the genres where its definition can be perceived differently by many people. Like all other genres, horror does have rules and traditions that must be included in order for a film to be considered a horror film. These rules and traditions include a protagonist, an antagonist, an escape or escape attempt of some sort, and very influential audio and visual effects.
There are many ideas in this world that you can turn into separate categories. Examples are types of teachers, types of books, and more. In this essay the reader will be able to learn the differences between three types of movies. These types of movies include, romance, horror, and comedy. Now, there are many upon many romance movies but how do we distinguish them from one another? Is it the sex scenes, the lovey dovey affections we see between the characters? We cannot know for sure. Horror movies are downright the best (just kidding, people prefer other types rather than horror), yet again, how do we distinguish these movies from others? Blood and gore? Or simply a mental beat up that the audience gets? Finally, it’s the same way with comedy
