The three pieces “Marigolds” By Eugenia W. Coller, “The Flowers” by Alice Walker and “The Problem We All Live With” by Norman Rockwell, all have have to do with defining moments because they all show 3 girls maturing, by having a specific moment in their lives that then defines who they are. For example in the story “Marigolds” by Eugenia W. Coller shows a girl named Elizabeth turning from an immature girl, to a responsible women. As it states in the story “The years have taken me worlds away from that time and that place, from the dust and squalor of our lives, and from the bright thing that I destroyed in a blind, childish striking out at God knows what… For one does not have to be ignorant and poor to find that his life is as barren as the dusty yards of our town. and now she realizes that just because Miss Lottie is poor she can also live a normal life and the Marigolds where why she kept living. The story “The flowers” by Alice Walker shows a defining moment when Myop, the main character thinks life is full of joy and happiness.
Until one day when she finds a dead mean that had hanged himself, as it states in the passage, “ she noticed a raised mound, a ring, around the rose's root. It was the rotted remains of a noose, a bit of shredding plowline, now blending benignly into the soil. Around an overhanging limb of a great spreading oak clung another piece. Frayed, rotted, bleached, and frazzled--barely there--but spinning restlessly in the breeze. Myop laid down her flowers. And the summer was over.” This shows that when she saw the dead man she ended her prime, or the happiest part of her life when it says “And the summer was over.” This also shows her maturing and caring about the world around her because her seeing the dead man scarred her and made her sad when she was always happy. This ties into defining moments because the moment she saw the dead man, she saw that not every ones life is worth living and that she should be thankful, and that is what defines
her. The final piece which is “The Problem We all Live With” by Norman Rockwell is a painting of Ruby Bridges ( A six year old African American girl), during the civil rights movement, being escorted to an all white school by U.S Marshals. The wall behind them have racial slurs indicating that the people around them did not approve of this act. This is a defining moment because she would not be respected by the white people, but she acted brave, and went to a white school anyways, and that is what defines her. In conclusion all of these pieces have to do with little girls realizing that the world around them is not perfect and can't be their way. This also shows them maturing and becoming stronger within.

The entire story was a symbol of Needy’s life. The setting in the story was symbolic to the way Needy was feeling. Needy’s life was diminishing right before his eyes, and he did not realize it. The different changes in the story represented how much Needy’s life had gradually changed over time. By reading the story the reader can tell that Needy was in a state of denial.
Although the little girl doesn’t listen to the mother the first time she eventually listens in the end. For example, in stanzas 1-4, the little girl asks if she can go to the Freedom March not once, but twice even after her mother had already denied her the first time. These stanzas show how the daughter is a little disobedient at first, but then is able to respect her mother’s wishes. In stanzas 5 and 6, as the little girl is getting ready the mother is happy and smiling because she knows that her little girl is going to be safe, or so she thinks. By these stanzas the reader is able to tell how happy the mother was because she thought her daughter would be safe by listening to her and not going to the March. The last two stanzas, 7 and 8, show that the mother senses something is wrong, she runs to the church to find nothing, but her daughter’s shoe. At this moment she realizes that her baby is gone. These stanzas symbolize that even though her daughter listened to her she still wasn’t safe and is now dead. The Shoe symbolizes the loss the mother is going through and her loss of hope as well. This poem shows how elastic the bond between the daughter and her mother is because the daughter respected her mother’s wish by not going to the March and although the daughter is now dead her mother will always have her in her heart. Eugenia Collier’s “Marigolds” is a memoir of a colored girl living in the Great Depression. The story does not focus on the troubles society presents to the narrator (Elizabeth), but rather is focused on the conflict within her. Collier uses marigolds to show that the changes from childhood to adulthood cause fear in Elizabeth, which is the enemy of compassion and hope.

These lines demonstrate the stage of adulthood and the daily challenges that a person is faced with. The allusions in the poem enrich the meaning of the poem and force the reader to become more familiar with all of the meaning hidden behind the words. For example, she uses words such as innocence, imprisonment and captive to capture the feelings experienced in each of the stages. The form of the poem is open because there are no specific instances where the lines are similar. The words in each stanza are divided into each of the three growth stages or personal experiences.

Through the open window she sees many other symbols furthering the feelings of goodness in the reader. She sees the tops of trees that "were all quiver with the new spring life" symbolizing a new life to come, something new happening in her life. The setting of a "delicious breath of rain" in the air refers to the calmness after a storm when the sun comes back out. Kate Chopin is using this to refer to the death of Mrs. Mallards' husband and the new joyous life she may now lead that she is free of him. Also to be heard outside are the singing of birds and the notes of a distant song someone was singing, symbolizing an oncoming feeling of wellness, a build up to her realization that she is now free of the tyrannical rule of her husband.

It may have been how she perceived her situation with her husband that makes time seem prolonged. And even though we might be young, we might perceive ourselves differently due to the conflicts we have been through. And then we advance on to the third irony picked out. Which is one the reader would think is the most obvious by the conclusion of the story. As Mrs. Mallard begins to come to the realization that she is liberated from her binds of her husband and whatever conflicts they might have had. She soon begins to feel the joyfulness of this, then that is when he miraculously appears. Not only putting a sudden halt to her joy, but then also an end to her life. Possibly her insubstantial heart was not able to take the sudden shock presented to her as she had fully expected the next time she was to see him was foreseen to be at his funeral. All three of these ironies seem to exhibit a positive and then the reflective negative throughout the story.
