Teaching Tolerance
The first article that I read was called Defeating Sexism in Sports Culture. The article focused on traditional gender roles, stereotypes and inequality in the education atmosphere and high school sports. The author stated that they were walking down the hallway of a typical high school during prom season, students had made posters advertising candidates for prom king and queen and put them up on the walls. One in particular had caught her eye and it read, “Soccer girls can be queens too” (Defeating, 2017). What bothered her was the fact that this girl believed that he had to make this statement publicly to her peers to be considered for prom queen. The first, is that she assumed that girls who are voted prom queen were popular and “girly”. The second, was that girls who play sports are manly and finally, athletic girls who play sports are generally not voted for prom queen (defeating, 2017). The most significant issue that the article presented was the fact that many girls who have played sports their entire lives, quit sports in high school because they do not want to be stereotyped or labeled as “ungirly” by their peers. Every girl dreams of at least two things in their lives, one is going prom and another is marriage. Many girls truly believe that if they play sports they forfeit the opportunity to be prom queen or even worse that they are no longer feminine. The author says that despite the strides that have been made by title IX, girls who chose to play sports must deal with sexism in all facets of the sport (Defeating, 2017).
