(Power 2002) makes mention to the 1970s as the era of the DSS concept, this is because the DSS concept was introduced during that period. Decision-making is the process of selecting a course of action (ideas or alternatives) that will solve a problem and resolve any issues. Decision-making models provide people with a method for making decisions. There are numerous decision-making methods people utilize today. Some are meant to be all encompassing, meaning they can be utilized in many different environments. Others are specific to issues or industries, such as technology, psychology, and mathematics. Regardless of the problem, there is usually a decision-making process that is best suited for any situation, and it is up to us to find it.
With the advent of e-systems; business and consumers have access to a plethora of information which makes the decision making process more complex. The overwhelming information flow makes it extremely difficult for decision makers to analyze the available data and make precise decisions. Under such an information intensive online environment, businesses need to make real time intelligent decisions in order to stay economically and commercially viable. Multi agent systems have the inherent ability to facilitate provision of an adequate decision support mechanism in an e-business setting. These multi –agent decision support systems are of particular assistance in processing large amounts of data, filtering out irrelevant information and eliminating cognitive biases. In this study, we attempt to explore the existing decision support mechanisms facilitating the e-business environment with respect to B2B and B2C segments. Several models have been proposed and implemented to assist decision support in e-systems. We attempt to identify possible weaknesses in these models and pin point future research areas that would provide an opportunity for improved decision support mechanisms in e-systems.
IT has become a significant factor in the operation and planning of information-based enterprises. Strategic information systems theory has done much to enable the description, explanation and prediction of behaviour. There remain significant weaknesses which need to be addressed.
Therefore, AIS has several roles. A main role is to integrate all information system for effective management within a company, connecting different departments with relevant information. Another role is to assist the organisation to make decisions by preparing different reports and evaluating information. It also provides a company with a control and safeguard internal information ((Kim and Solomon 2006).
The area of information system application chosen is the decision support system. A decision support system (DSS) is an information system designed to help leaders and team’s members to reach a decision when a decision-making situation arises (Haag, 2013). In the area of management that I have worked, I have experience a range of decision support systems that helps with a range of decisions depending on the tasks and missions.
