Death of a Salesman is a Tragedy as Defined in Miller's Tragedy and the Common Man
In Tragedy and the Common Man, Arthur Miller discusses his definition and criteria for tragedy as they apply to the common man. The criteria and standards proposed by Miller may be used to evaluate his timeless work, Death of A Salesman.
The first major standard of tragedy set forth is: “...if the exaltation of tragic action were truly a property of the high-bred character alone, it is inconceivable that the mass of mankind should cherish tragedy above all other forms.” All persons regardless of background, nobility stature, rank, or pretended or actual social division can innately empathize with the tragic hero. In the case of Willy Loman there is a certain familiarity. He is the proverbial man down the block; indeed we may say in viewing the play common man is empathizing with common man. Willy Loman is real. Where as some may remark, “I know someone like him,” perhaps they may even see themselves in him. Miller’s subtle wordplay of “Loman” and “layman” is interesting in this regard. It is our familiarity with Willy Loman that is the endearing quality which draws us closer to him. Through, identification with his struggles and pains we achieve an appreciation of his plight. This identification is universal. The universality of identification is, among those reading or viewing the play, a bonding force for persons of every station. Miller’s success in this point is bred from our own pathos for Willie Loman.

...mething greater than himself, his image, or his success. He is motivated by his love for his son. Therefore, since his primary focus is beyond himself, it consequently elevates him. He taps into and is accordingly clothed with the grandeur tragedy.
Considering the points discussed here in this paper, which is by no means a comprehensive analysis of Miller’s essay, several questions are raised in my mind. Did Arthur Miller provide us with this essay as a response or defense of Death of a Salesman? Is he trying to justify his work by remolding the definition of tragedy to justify and elevate this play? Whatever the case it is clear that Death of a Salesman fits the model set forth by Miller in Tragedy and the Common Man.

His style of writing supports the idea that modern writing should always strive to establish the meaning, soundness and unity which has been lost in modern ways of life. Klages defines modernity as a period (era) where societal norms and values determine the social order. Resultantly, anything that goes against these norms is deemed immoral, and within the social realm, the truth is the absolute element. Nevertheless, in page 4 of Tragedy and the Common Man, Miller holds a varied stand when he claims that “if society alone is responsible for cramping our lives, then the protagonist needs must be so pure and faultless”. Even though the concept of relativism is not properly developed within this story, Miller captures all the essential elements. He judges capitalism basing on what his culture holds right or what he personally considers right. He uses a clear and transparent language, and he shares his personal feeling towards capitalism to the audience in an accurate and clear way. Therefore, we can ascertain that Miller’s Death of a Salesman is in line with the elements of
Arthur Miller states in his essay, "Tragedy and the Common Man," " . . . we are often held to be below tragedy--or tragedy below us . . . (tragedy is) fit only for the highly placed . . . and where this admission is not made in so many words it is most often implied." However, Miller believes " . . . the common man is as apt a subject for tragedy in its highest sense as kings were" (1021). It is this belief that causes Miller to use a common man, Willie Loman, as the subject of his tragedy, Death of a Salesman. Miller redefines the tragic hero to fit a more modern age, and the product of this redefinition is Willie.
Many dilemmas throughout the recent decades are repercussions of an individual's foibles. Arthur Miller represents this problem in society within the actions of Willy Loman in his modern play Death of a Salesman. In this controversial play, Willy is a despicable hero who imposes his false value system upon his family and himself because of his own rueful nature, which is akin to an everyman. This personality was described by Arthur Miller himself who "Believe[s] that the common man is as apt a subject for a tragedy in its highest sense as kings were" (Tragedy 1).

Affirmative Action has been an issue of contention since its inception during the Civil Rights struggles of mid 20th century America. Discrimination could no longer be tolerated and the Unites States government had an obligation to encourage equality at all levels of the social infrastructure. The main type of discrimination being addressed by Affirmative Action programs was racial discrimination. The Merriam Webster dictionary defines racism as: ‘a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.’ The Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibited discrimination of any kind, laid the foundation for the introduction of Affirmative Action programs. In 1965, Lyndon Johnson signed an executive order requiring government contractors to diversify its staff by hiring more members of the minorities. President Nixon implemented a system in which the government could monitor the progress being made by businesses in hiring minorities. Eventually, high level educational institutions would also see the need for Affirmative Action and the benefits of a diverse student body. Affirmative Action was designed to overcome the issue of discrimination in education and the workplace by giving less fortunate members of the minority an opportunity to level the playing field and achieve success similar to that of their counterparts in the majority. Affirmative Action programs, which encourage the inclusion of minorities in education and at all levels in the workplace, are vital in the effort to eradicate discrimination and provide equal opportunity.

Very few people will argue against the unethical nature of the racial segregation that existed in the United States during the early 20th century, and far less so of that which existed in the antebellum South. However, affirmative action can often occupy a moral grey-area for some people, as a form of benign racism or sexism. After all, if its intentions are good, what harm could it do? This is where supporters of affirmative action get it wrong. By giving in to this circularly validated mentality, we are allowing the ends to justify the means. In order to eliminate racial prejudice, affirmative action advocates promote a system that adheres to racial discrimination as a solution. Simply replacing one form of discrimination for another.
The effort to foster an equal playing field in our education system for everyone is a noble cause, yet in reality, this cause has proven to be divisive and ineffective. To put it simply, affirmative action is an utter failure that creates far more harm than it does equality. Years of research have underlined the fact that affirmative action has done little to reverse racial inequality and has only furthered the issue by challenging the true meaning of equality for all.
