Death and the Maiden and Punishment are literatures that are about woman that have suffered in their life`s, but at the end they make choices that made them happy. These two literatures explain the power women can contribute through control. Paulina and Chandara are from two different countries and backgrounds, but very similar when it comes to completing a goal in their life`s they have to fulfill. Chandara and Paulina are two woman that seem weak at the beginning of the story and play, but as they set on a target they become strong and wise on the decisions they make. A major them that occurs in Death in the Maiden and Punishment is control.
Control is defined as, to dominate or command of something or someone. In Death and the Maiden and in Punishment, Paulina and Chandara take control of their life`s and decide how to live them without anyone telling them how to live their life`s. Chandara possess self realization when she uncovers that her husband does not truly care about her and starts making her own choices and have self-respect towards herself. Also, Paulina knows she wants Roberto to say the truth that he raped her. With Roberto saying he raped her, she will feel free and more secure with herself after knowing she heard what she wanted to hear.
Also, one main thing that affects women in Death and the Maiden and in Punishment is the way their country runs the government. Death and the Maiden takes places in Chile; in Chile the government was run by military dictatorship, but years later it became a democratic state(Gascoigne). In conclusion, control is seen as a power factor in Death in the Maiden and Punishment. Paulina and Chandara are considered inspirations for many women, because many may be in the same situations as they were and don’t know what to do, but Chandara and Paulina were able to do things their way and had control over their lives. Paulina and Chandara were outsiders in their country when it came to justice and laws, but that did not stop them from believing what was correct and getting justice from others actions.
The setting of these two stories emphasize, on visually showing us how the main characters are based around trying to find freedom despite the physical, mental and emotional effects of living in confinement. While on the other hand, dealing with Psychology’s ugly present day behavior showing dystopia of societies views of women during the time period they lived.
Elizabeth Bathory is known by many different names; ‘The Bloody Lady of Čachtice’, ‘The Blood Countess’, ‘Countess Dracula’, and not without reason. In the 16th century this murderess became obsessed with achieving mastery over nature; the countess had forsaken her humanity by drinking the blood of virgins for vitality and bleeding them dry to bathe in it for her skin to be clear of imperfections and signs of aging. With torture and a side of cannibalism, Countess Bathory was not the poster-woman for mental health, but her fear of death was what drove her to go to such extremes. Humans will go to endless lengths to maintain the illusion of mastery over nature and control over life and death. Throughout Oryx and Crake, Margaret Atwood explores human nature and puts forth that humans are driven by knowledge and fear of their own mortality. She argues that humans seek to play a divine role to control their own fate and in the process, sacrificing morals and ethics to quell that fear.
Eupriedes, Medea and Sappho’s writing focus on women to expose the relationships between a variety of themes and the general ideal that women are property. The main characters in both pieces of literature demonstrate similar situations where love and sex result in a serious troll. These themes affected their relationship with themselves and others, as well as, incapability to make decisions which even today in society still affects humans. Headstrong actions made on their conquest for everlasting love connects to sacrifices they made to achieve their goal which ultimately ended in pain. Finally, even though, for a long time, the roles of woman in a relationship have been established to be what I already explained, we see that these two protagonists broke that conception and established new ways of behaving in them. One did it by having an affair with another man and expressing freely her sexuality and the other by breaking free from the prison her marriage represented and discovering her true self. The idea that unites the both is that, in their own way, they defied many beliefs and started a new way of thinking and a new perception of life, love and relationships.
Throughout studies of ancient civilizations Woman's place seems to be similar, but through a large spectrum of roles; as in the tales of Medea and Gilgamesh. Both tales tell their own views on Women, but also show each woman in their best and worst: The common, the priestess, the harlot, the wise, or just an evil witch. Men are to represent both the man and the women in the social realm and are the “breadwinners” and women are to be the domestic housewives. This difference in roles is especially prevalent in Thucydides’s text. He asserts that citizenship in Athens was closely tied to the honor of battle and the political sphere. Citizens were expected to be active in the social and political sphere, as well as die with honor in battle. Because women could not defend themselves and represent themselves, they could not obtain citizenship, and it is precisely because they did not have citizenship that they could not represent themselves. This allowed for men to look down on women because they could not perform the civic duty that they were not even allowed to do. Therefore, there was this confusing cycle that women were trapped in. Christine de Pizan, however, challenges this notion that women have no say in the social sphere. She does this personally in her life when she manages her own land, and writes her own books. Again, her case is extremely rare in that influence and background as the wife of a nobleman allowed for this. Her education also was a great asset and in normal circumstances, had she been a woman with no social standing, this would not have been possible. In The Chronicle of a Death Foretold, religion acts as a foremost determinant of the meaning of Santiago’s murder and parallels biblical passages. Gabriel García Márquez employs religious symbolism throughout his novella which alludes to Christ, his familiars, and his death on the cross. There are many representations throughout the novella that portray these biblical references, such as the murder of Santiago, the Divine Face, the cock’s crowing and the characters, Bayardo San Roman, Maria Cervantes, Divina Flor, and the Vicario children.
The society in which classical myths took place, the Greco-Roman society was a very patriarchal one. By taking a careful gander at female characters in Greco-Roman mythology one can see that the roles women played differ greatly from the roles they play today. The light that is cast upon females in classical myths shows us the views that society had about women at the time. In classical mythology women almost always play a certain type of character, that is to say the usual type of role that was always traditionally played by women in the past, the role of the domestic housewife who is in need of a man’s protection, women in myth also tended to have some unpleasant character traits such as vanity, a tendency to be deceitful, and a volatile personality. If one compares the type of roles that ladies played in the myths with the ones they play in today’s society the differences become glaringly obvious whilst the similarities seem to dwindle down. The concept how woman are treated in modern times have changed drastically compared to woman who lived in the conservative period. That period was the time where the perception of individuals in general dealt with countless restraints. The women were the ones who were affected the most because these values had strongly influenced them. Woman behaved in a way how their husband’s wanted because they were living their lives by the controlled ways of the man. The story of “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and the story of “The Awakening” by Kate Chopin are two stories that show accurately the way how women were treated at that time; exactly Edna and the other women. I want to discuss that the main characters of these two stories; Edna and the other women’s liberty were interdicted by their husbands. Finally, the way how both stories end; Edna’s suicide, and the other women’s insanity; demonstrates their inability to escape from the unhappy reality. None of them found the real strength, to outdo the restriction and effects of society, to attain their independence and freedom that they continuously wanted to achieve.
Women had no choice but to follow whatever society told them to because there was no other option for them. Change was very hard for these women due to unexpected demands required from them. They held back every time change came their way, they had to put up with their oppressors because they didn’t have a mind of their own. Both authors described how their society affected them during this historical period.
From the beginning of time in history, women have always been portrayed as and seen as the submissive sex. Women especially during the time period of the 1800s were characterized as passive, disposable, and serving an utilitarian function. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is a prime example displaying the depiction of women. The women in Frankenstein represent the treatment of women in the early 1800’s. Shelley’s incorporation of suffering and death of her female characters portrays that in the 1800’s it was acceptable. The women in the novel are treated as property and have minimal rights in comparison to the male characters. The feminist critic would find that in Frankenstein the women characters are treated like second class citizens. The three brutal murders of the innocent women are gothic elements which illustrates that women are inferior in the novel. Mary Shelley, through her novel Frankenstein, was able to give the reader a good sense of women’s role as the submissive sex, through the characters experiences of horrific events including but not limited to brutal murder and degradation, which is illuminated by her personal life experiences and time period of romanticism.
Shakespeare illustrates the injustices done to women by demonstrating the treatment Desdemona and Emilia received after having been framed of adultery. Because both women are though of cheating on their husbands, they no longer fit in society’s model of an exemplary wife. Despite having proved their affection for their husbands countless of times, not having a pure image led to Iago and Othello mistreating of the women they once loved. Once both women began to stand up for themselves and challenge the authority of their husbands, the repercussions of their bravery were both women’s death. Which shows, women’s only source of authority was their reputation as a wife. Once they lost that status, they no longer held any form or respect in society or with their husband’s.
In Latin America, women are treated differently from men and children. They do lots of work for unexplainable reasons. Others for religious reasons and family orders and others because of the men involved. Women are like objects to men and have to obey their orders to either be rich or to live. Some have sex to get the men’s approval, others marry a rich man that they don’t even know very well, and become slaves. An important book called Chronicles of a Death Foretold is an example of how these women are treated. Purisima del Carmen, Angela Vicario's mother, has raised Angela and her sisters to be good wives. The girls do not marry until late in life, rarely socializing beyond the outsides of their own home. They spend their time sewing, weaving, washing and ironing. Other occupations include arranging flowers, cleaning up the house, and writing engagement letters to other men. They also keep the old traditions alive, such as helping the sick, comforting the dying, and covering the dead. While their mother believes they are perfect, men view them as too tied to their women's traditions. The men are afraid that the women would pay more attention to their job more than the men. Throughout the book, the women receive the respect they deserve from the men and others around them.

To find out what their roles in the relationship are, it is important to understand the characters of Lydia and John's wife, how they describe their marriages and their behaviour, in order to see how their choices affect in a positive or negative outcomes in their marriages.
She is troubled by her time in captivity, resulting in her not being able to even consider her present and future life or plans. Her memories of the past remain too clear in her mind, and have too much of a large impact on her for her to be able to simply forget them and move on. It’s evident that her character is determined and strong-willed, meaning she doesn’t forgive and forget easily and is prepared to go to extreme extents to get revenge for what has happened to her. Paulina says to Gerardo while talking about her power to kill the man who has raped her and caused her so much misery and grief: “And then I’ll put the gun in my mouth and pull the trigger.” (Dorfman 20) Paulina’s past experiences have had extreme effects on her character, desires and beliefs, that her and her husband, Gerardo, hold an unstable relationship. Paulina needs to try to forget some of her terrible past and live her life without it consuming her, while Gerardo needs to learn to accept what happened to his wife and country, particularly if he wants to succeed in his new position and in his marriage.
