Death of a Salesman Essay
The important role of “success” in Death of a Salesman is a father that had a difficult job and has to travel a lot to provide for his family. Is means that is is focuses on Willy Loman's failures in the play. And the conflicts he caused with his sons and Linda by always trying to be well liked.
When Willy causes conflict with his son Biff, he usually is talking about how he is 34 and still lives at home and doesn't have a job. He says “When the hell did I lose my temper? I simply asked him if he was making any money. Is that a criticism?”(Miller, act 1, scene 1, page 7). He had to travel for work and drive a lot just to make the house payment. He thinks that them working hard and them becoming successful, will make them want to settle down and have their own families. He wants them to have to work as hard as Willy had to to be successful.
I think when Linda gets mad at her sons for talking badly about Willy, is her knowing how hard Willy has worked over the years and their sons had taken advantage of Willy. They don't really understand how hard Willy has worked over the years. Are they worse than his sons? When he brought them business, when he was young, they were glad to see him. But now his old friends, the old buyers that loved him so and always found some order to hand him in a pinch- they’re all dead, retired. He used to be able to make six, seven calls a day in Boston. Now he takes his vasiles out of the car and puts them back and takes them out again and he’s exhausted. Instead of walking he talks now. He drives seven hundred miles, and when he gets there no one knows him anymore, no one welcomes him. And what goes through a man's mind, driving seven hundred miles home without having earned a cent? Why shouldn't he talk to himself? Why? When he has to go to Charley and borrow fifty dollars a week and pretend to me that it's his pay? How long can that go on? How long? You see what i'm sitting here and waiting for? And you tell me he has no character? The man
