-Text-to-self: The recurring theme I received from the Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller was the yearning for success. Through out the play Willy Loman had dreams of becoming a big time salesman; he wanted to be rich. He wanted to be better off. As for his kids he wanted that for them as well. Especially for his youngest son Biff who wasn’t really doing much with his life. This theme of success is something I can relate to. I’m sure many people, if not all, dream of success. People dream of going to school getting a degree and making something of themselves. My biggest fear is failure; not being able to complete the plans I had for my future. I yearn for success I want to be something in life.
-Text-to-Itself: Death of a Salesman is a very interesting play, especially in the way it is written. Throughout the play I have notice that the setting seems to transition between two time periods; the play’s current time period of that of the past. In one moment the story takes place in this time then the next it takes place at a different time. For example in act 1 on one page the author could be writing about current events of the play then on the next he could be writing about Happy and Biff’s childhood. It’s a unique way of writing. Many want to be successful in this world; many want to fulfill their dreams and goals. In this world, in this society those who have accomplished more tend to have more authority and power than others. That is why we go to school. That is why we put in the hours to study so that we can become something. We struggle with grades and college tuitions so that in the end we’ll know that we have accomplished something.
