Arthur Miller was born in Harlem, New York, and attended the University of Michigan. He is an immigrant, and is from Polish and Jewish decent. His father owned a manufacturing business and his mother was an educator. So far things sound great, but his inspiration for Death of a Salesman seems to come from his own experiences. Arthur seemed to have things under control and that life was going great until the Wall Street Crash, and suddenly he had nothing just like Willy Lowman. The play written by Arthur Miller is an intriguing story that tells a story about and family trying to achieve the American Dream. He thought that being aggressive yet well liked would bring him success in America. He was wrong because at the age of sixty three he was struggling and could barely support his family. Even his two sons were struggling to become successful, and have not yet been able to achieve the American Dream. “Many people think the American Dream is owning a home, that may be one way to reach economic security and a sense of hope for the future but maybe it’s more of a pathway to the dream than a component of the dream itself” (Schoenherr). Basically his idea of the American dream was distorted. The first thing the reader may noticed when reading this interesting play about the American dream is the conflicts that happened within the family. Willy’s faith in his version of the American Dream leads him to a rapid psychological downfall when he is unable to accept the sad truth between the American Dream and his own life. Willy’s experience with abandonment does not help him either. This makes him fall deeper into a depression and causes his psychological health to decapitate. Willy has this emotional attachment when it comes to abandonment. First his father leaves him and Ben when he was young, and this causes him to learn how to maintain for himself and start to think of creating sort of a legacy for himself, his
