The summary of philosophy professor Nicholas Dixon on problematic intermediate cases dealing with impaired sex suggest that women hold their own responsibility for their own actions. Taking a look at women being responsible for their own actions, Katie Rophie extended this approach by insisting “that women are autonomous adults who are responsible for the consequences of their use of alcohol and other drugs” (p. 292). While Camila Pagilia added that women need to be more aware of what they are doing. Women need to practice being more alert to warning signs, also avoid getting drunk and learning self-defense. First one has to conclude if the action was rape or impaired sex. In my opinion if sex was in anyway forced or performed on someone whom is completely unconscious, that is rape. In that situation the woman should hold no responsibility for her actions because she is being forced to perform sexual intercourse. On the other hand, women should hold partial responsibility if the situation regards impaired sex. This is because it is “their voluntary decision to drink large amounts of alcohol, made in full knowledge that it may result in choices that they will later regret” (p 292). It is my judgement that it is a woman’s duty to make their wishes about sex clear and it is a man’s duty to ensure that the woman consents to sex.
While reading through this section on alcohol and rape I have come to question the differences between impaired sex and rape. In my understanding, the difference is that impaired sex is something that is controlled by the woman, she controls the amount of alcohol that she is consuming therefore she is responsible for her own actions whether she regrets them later or not. Whereas rape is controlled by the man, at this point the woman has no control and is being forced to have sexual
