Every country on our planet faces environmental issues. Many of the environmental problems in Europe are caused by the poor practices in the past by local industries. Two of the most common environmental issues are acid rain and Air pollution. Air pollution is a mixture of solid particles and gasses in the air. It is a very disturbing and bothering topic in the United Kingdom. Air pollution was caused by the emissions from factories or from homes burning coal for heat. This smog covered over many cities and that lead to about 4,000 deaths in 1952. Acid rain is rain polluted by gasses released into the air by the burning of fossil fuels, like coal or oil. It reduces human life expectancy by more than eight months on average and by more than two years in the most polluted cities and regions” (Doc C). Air pollution is one of the virtual problems nowadays. Air pollution is mainly caused by cars. One of the most common pollutants is smog. Smog is a dark or opaque fog which is formed by the dust and smoke particles causing condensation of water vapors. Smog harms plant life through glazing and the death of plant cells. In human beings and animals, it produces respiratory troubles. “Observed in the image, there is a lot more air pollution in specific areas due to highways from factories being placed in those areas.”(Doc B). Acid rain is rain polluted by gasses released into the air by the burning of fossil fuels, like coal or oil. It has affected many European countries but the most one out of all of them was Germany. Acid rain has many effects, but none is greater than its impact on lakes, streams, wetlands, and other aquatic environments. Acid rain makes waters acidic, and causes them to absorb the aluminum that makes its way from soil into lakes and streams.“Experts estimate that more than one-half of Germany’s trees have been damaged or killed by acid rain.” (Background Essay 1: Acid Rain). Germany has suffered from acid rain for a long time now and it has taken a very bad and miserable impact on Germany’s forests. The acid rain in Germany is a terrible concern to all Europeans. Germany has made strict changes to its coal production practices and closed old, inefficient factories. Germany has also put strict laws in place to reduce pollution. Factory owners will be fined if they do not reduce the amount of sulfur dioxide they release into the air. Cars must have a special converter fitted to the exhaust system, and the government is working to change over to less polluting fuels like oil and natural
