“For peace to reign on Earth, humans must evolve into new beings who have learned to see the whole first.” (Kant). Some humans see no options in life but to end it. These people are finished with their lives for some reason so they are willing to take action. Committing suicide is a big decision that could possibly bring a lot of burdens such as: a failed attempt, a heartbroken family or breaking a promise to god or morality. A failed suicide attempt could leave a person worse off in life than they would have been, had they not made the attempt. Committing suicide affects family members more than anyone, in the end, even more so than the one who committed the act. Suicide is not permissible in the eyes of god, and some people’s morality, so by attempting suicide, one is ruining their promise. Although suicide can bring these burdens, some do not care or think about the consequences. By not committing suicide, they are miserable. He believes it is one’s own decision on when to die. Hume says that no one throws away a worthwhile life. Suicide would not be inconsideration if a person has a worthwhile life. Therefore, it is wrong to assume suicide is a violation of self-obligation, according to his view. People have no duty to others to not kill themselves. Suicide simply repeals our social agreements. Understanding of such an act only requires that both sides be free from their duties upon such a repeal. Suicide can only be wrong if it disobeys our duty to God, others, or ourselves, but suicide could be part of god’s plan for someone just as any other natural event. The best argument against Hume’s view is how committing suicide has a negative impact on others and mankind.
