David Carson
David Carson is a prominent contemporary American graphic designer, art director and a competitive surfer. The graphic design sector was revolutionised by his innovative graphic styles during the 1990s. He has worked for major clients including Levi’s, Quicksilver, Nike, Yale University and Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign.
Early Life
Carson was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on the 8th of September 1955. He attended Cocoa Beach High School and San Diego State University, graduated with Honours and Distinction in Sociology. His first attempt in graphic design was in 1980, during a two week commercial designing class at the University of Arizona. His unique style and typography designs became recognised and he has received over hundred design awards.
Carson was offered to design Ray Gun, a music and lifestyle magazine by the publisher Marvin Scott Jarrett, who saw Carson’s potentials in design. Carson was able to experiment his own style of designing, he chose to ignore the standard practices of typography, all forms of grid systems and even columns, titles and page numbers. Carson has attracted many more admirers through his work in Ray Gun and became featured in The New York Time and Newsweek. This opportunity has also helped Carson to earn him the unofficial title of ‘Godfather of Grunge’.
Carson’s unique style soon appeared on album covers and worldwide, many designers tended to imitate his flair. In 1995, Carson left Ray Gun and began his own studio in New York. His talent attracted clients such as Pepsi Cola, Nike, Microsoft and American Airlines. Later, he worked for clients across the globe, including British Airways, Lycra, Sony, Toyota and CNN.
