David Broder’s argumentative essay, A Call to Service, brings a formal and prideful tone to argue in favor of America’s young population serving in the military. His thesis reads, “It does not demean or dishonor them to suggest that this holiday is also a time to consider whether the ideal of national service, which they represent, should be extended to a much larger part of our population—especially our young people.” From this, Broder successfully articulates the modes of persuasion, provides meaningful insight, and uses sound evidence to build his argumentative essay. This is proven throughout her life. Despite outside influences and events, Mary continued steadfast in her beliefs as a Puritan.
In 1960, at the age of twenty-four, Philip Caputo enlists in the United Sates Marine Corps in hopes of escaping his relaxed lifestyle in the quaint town of Westchester, Illinois. Caputo is interested in proving himself a man and earning respect in response to President John F. Kennedy’s Inaugural Address to the nation. “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” are the famous words that pushed many young men into the patriotic world of enlistment, in order to defend American ideals. Caputo’s expectations of the war in Vietnam are to achieve heroic acts, finish his missions quickly and efficiently, get out in one piece, and return home to a supportive country interested in his heroic adventures.
Document 13-2 is a journal based on plantation rules for slaves all in a journal written by Bennet Barrow on May 1st of 1838. He named his journal, “Highland Plantation Journal” so he could reference back to his rules he told his slaves working on his plantation. Barrow wrote this journal because he wanted his slaves to follow a guideline of rules and regulations so they know what their master expects, and in this case, their master would be Barrow. The first few lines indicate that all men and women of colored skin should have these rules and regulation imposed on them. Barrow in his journal his very straight forward and gets to the point, he states, “No negro shall leave at anytime without my permission.” Just by this statement, one can jump to conclusion of the amount of grief and sorrow a slave goes through on a daily basis just by this one out of many rules.
During the Vietnam Conflict, many Americans held a poor view of the military and its political and military leadership. Tim O’Brien finds himself staring at his draft notice on June 17, 1968. He was confused and flustered. O’Brien does not know how or why he got selected for the draft. All he knew was that he was above the war itself, “A million things all at once—I was too good for this war. Too smart, too compassionate, to everything. It couldn’t happen” (41). He was also demented on the fact that he, a war hater, was being drafted. He felt if anyone were to be drafted it should be the people who supported the war. “If you support a war, if you think it’s worth the price, that’s fine, but you have to put your own precious fluids on the line” (42). His draft notice was when he first carried his thought of embarrassment. He instantly thought if he does not support the war he should not have to go to war. The only way not to go to war was to flee the country so the draft council could not find him. He had a moral split. “I feared the war, yes, but I also feared exile” (44). This quote is so true in young adults, not only then, but also now. Kennedy once said “mankind must put an end to war before war puts an end to mankind.” (Brainy Quotes) This quote describes the message Timothy Findley was trying to convey using the four elements in his novel “The Wars.” The four elements are water, fire, earth, and air. Findley uses Water to show the reader that as Robert goes through the war he slowly loses both his freedom and his clarity. Fire conveys the message that as the war continues people change how they show passion, and how some of the soldiers have lost their humanity. Earth shows the reader that the Earth is human’s home which is supposed to support and protect them, but in times of war, it does the opposite. This contrast in style affirms that the soldiers are human and provides emphasis to the weight these intangible objects have on the soldiers. One thing that stands out is the author’s approach to the betterment of the community. Aside from trying to recruit individuals into the service, I believe he might also acknowledge Grossman for what he’s doing to the homeless citizens of Los Angeles. We can assume the author appreciates creating a better and easier life for people. Most importantly, however, it is agreeable to say that the article implies that the military is what the author remarkably values. I feel this way because in all corners of the article, it is touched upon. For example, the author prints, “The qualities you acquire while in the military are qualities that stay with you forever,” and “Today’s Military: See it for what it really is.” Additionally, he informs us that Grossman has been featured in magazines highlighting those who have served in the U.S. Military. Second, Mildred escalates Montag’s inner war, by often antagonizing and betraying him. Throughout the novel, Mildred shows extremely bossy and inconsiderate qualities which eventually cause problems with Montag. Mildred’s attitude towards Montag play a part in Montag’s brewing internal war. For example, when Montag was sick, he asked, “"Will you turn it (the parlor) off for a sick man?" "I'll turn it down." Ever since World War II, the last war that garnered full American support, the percentage of American citizens enrolling in the U.S. Army has diminished significantly. The U.S. is a major military power in the present world; American soldiers are engaged in many multi-theater positions, consequently dispersing troops over various regions worldwide. As only one in ten citizens has served in the US Army, American knowledge of military conditions is rapidly lessening along with the national harmony that complements such knowledge. Therefore, the comprehension that American security is closely associated with a formidable military never resonated within the greater part of modern American citizens. Although antiwar activists may decry compulsory conscription as unconstitutional, it needs to be reinstated in order to solidify the meaning of being an American citizen, boost the economy by providing jobs, and unify the American people with enhanced homeland security.
The astonishing book, the Wednesday Wars, takes place in Kentucky in the 1960’s during the time of the Vietnam War. Education and social is in a different style then known today and religion played a big part of the people’s lives. In I and Thou, a statement is made that is quite intriguing when Martin Buber states that “Man’s world is manifold, and his attitudes are manifold” (Kaufmann, 1996, pg. 9). Manifold is defined, as many or various meaning that there isn’t one particular choice. Martin Buber discusses manifold he describes it as something that is often frightening because it is not neat or simple. Men prefer things to be neat and simple because it makes it easier to decide what to do. People typically like to try to forget the many possibilities that are open to them.
