To conclude, “Daystar” and “To a Daughter Leaving Home”, both shared various similarities and differences regarding symbolism and mood throughout both poems. It was easily seen that even in general societal time periods, the mood of “To a Daughter Leaving Home” was very common. Though, in “Daystar” a lot of the responsibilities of a mother was leased over the years and I believe that more roles in the household are now equal. Poetry in these contexts allow the readers to realize the reality of life taken from a parent’s perspective and maybe some of the changes that it has took over the years. The poem explains her hardships. Reading poetry is different from reading prose because you really have to dig deeper and study harder. A poem is not always straight forward like many other writings. You have to use context clues and understand imagery, tone, and sense. Summarizing a poem becomes difficult if you do not re-read several times. There is no greater bond then a boy and his father, the significant importance of having a father through your young life can help mold you to who you want to become without having emotional distraught or the fear of being neglected. This poem shows the importance in between the lines of how much love is deeply rooted between these two. In a boys life he must look up to his father as a mentor and his best friend, the father teaches the son as much as he can throughout his experience in life and build a strong relationship along the way. For the most part of the poem she states how she believes that it is Gods calling, [Then ta’en away unto eternity] but in other parts of the poem she eludes to the fact that she feels more like her granddaughter was stolen from her [or sigh thy days so soon were terminate]. One of the main beliefs in these times was that when someone died it was their time; God needed them and had a better plan. Both poets found peace in the idea that God had the children now and it was part of the plan, but are also deeply saddened and used poetry as a coping mechanism.
Although the little girl doesn’t listen to the mother the first time she eventually listens in the end. For example, in stanzas 1-4, the little girl asks if she can go to the Freedom March not once, but twice even after her mother had already denied her the first time. These stanzas show how the daughter is a little disobedient at first, but then is able to respect her mother’s wishes. In stanzas 5 and 6, as the little girl is getting ready the mother is happy and smiling because she knows that her little girl is going to be safe, or so she thinks. By these stanzas the reader is able to tell how happy the mother was because she thought her daughter would be safe by listening to her and not going to the March. The last two stanzas, 7 and 8, show that the mother senses something is wrong, she runs to the church to find nothing, but her daughter’s shoe. At this moment she realizes that her baby is gone. These stanzas symbolize that even though her daughter listened to her she still wasn’t safe and is now dead. The Shoe symbolizes the loss the mother is going through and her loss of hope as well. While reading the poem “Daystar,” written by Rita Dove, its readers most likely do not ask thought-provoking questions like “Why did Dove write this?” or “What is the true meaning behind this poem?” but the poem has deeper meaning than what its outside layer portrays. Dove, an African American woman born in 1952, has not only viewed the racism of the United States society, but she has also seen how gender can or cannot play a role in the advancement of a person’s life (Rita Dove: The Poetry Foundation). The poem “Daystar” not only takes an outside perspective on the everyday life of a woman, but it closely relates to Dove’s family history. Dove uses the experiences of her life as a woman, and the knowledge gained from living in countries other than the United States, to depict the pressure and desire felt by mothers and/or wives on a daily basis.

With both poems possessing strong sentimental tones, readers are shown how much of an impact a father can have on a child’s life. Clearly the two main characters experience very different past relationships with their fathers, but in the end they both come to realize the importance of having a father figure in their lives and how their experiences have impacted their futures.
Linda Pastan’s poem, “For a Daughter Leaving Home,” displays how a parent views the life of his or her daughter by relating it to their daughter’s first bicycle ride. Her bicycle ride represents the difficult and stressful journey that the girl has embarked on throughout her life. Although the girl is now grown up and ready to start a life of her own, her parent is recalling everything about the girl’s life up to this point.
Another aspect that can be derived from this poem is Atwood’s father’s obvious intentions to give her an awareness of the many adversities life can obtain. He has made sure she leads a life that doesn’t result from a spoiled childhood. He made her attentive of a hard days work, which is probably one of the best things a father can teach his child. It is absolutely essential that parents in general teach their children the many hardships life may behold. This gives the child a better direction in means of future obligations.
The author uses imagery, contrasting diction, tones, and symbols in the poem to show two very different sides of the parent-child relationship. The poem’s theme is that even though parents and teenagers may have their disagreements, there is still an underlying love that binds the family together and helps them bridge their gap that is between them.
During this week my classmates and I had to select poetry and discuss how it relates to us and the meaning of it. Some of my fellow did just that and some select a poetry that they feel that should be mentioned about. The poetry that my classmates and I chose was “Daystar” by Rita Dove. I learned from my classmates and Rita poetry that we all get caught up in our busy lives of taking care of our responsibility those we for get to take time out for ourselves. The only time that we that we do have we be at a standstill drifting away into a day bream for as long as we can to relax and have peace.
The development of this poem moves from one attitude to another, and there is a change of tone in each stanza starting from happy to becoming depressed and finally angry. This poem tells a story with a meaning behind it.
In “Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law” by Adrienne Rich the poet is able to touch on all the different stages in a woman’s life therefore adopting a story temperament. The story temperament can be defined as a poem having three parts consisting of a beginning, middle, and end. The poem also has to display unity, focus, conflict, and resolution. Every woman may face different conflicts in their lives but in the poem the women are faced with sadness and depression while living in a patriarchal society. The title itself is very strong in that it is not snapshots of a woman, but snapshots of a daughter-in-law. This title foreshadows a male figure in which the woman will be married to and dependent upon. The word snapshots can also foreshadow the different stages in a woman’s life certain photos (or stanzas) will capture.
