Although Knoxville has many dangerous spots transportation wise, I have chosen an intersection in Alcoa in which I have much more knowledge of to discuss. This particular intersection is the US 129 bypass at Louisville Road. I mention that I have previous knowledge of this intersection because I am in fact an employee of this city, and have therefore compiled crash data as well as traffic counts for such. Not only is this intersection dangerous because of high speeds, but there is also a lack of acceleration lanes in which to enter traffic, and businesses such as Wal-mart and Cracker Barrel contribute to it’s cross road over crowding.
The US 129 bypass at Louisville Road has been one of the largest intersections in Alcoa for at least fifteen years. Before that time, this intersection was much less used and had a single lane in each direction. It wasn’t until Walmart’s relocation to this intersection that the intersection became so dangerous. Just like with all development, comes heavier traffic, and with heavier traffic comes more development. At this point there are close to fifty stores surrounding this particular intersection with many more large name chains such as Dick’s and Kohl’s moving in within the next year.
The importance of this intersection is that it is the only access to Knoxville from Maryville in which the driver does not have to
Dave Barry’s “Road Warrior” is a humorous essay that discusses different types of “rages” that exists on a daily basis in American life. Barry begins by discussing road rage then goes into parking lot rage, and shopping cart rage. He explains that these rages are unnecessary, and how they just create violence in the world today. While Barry was writing this article he was living in Miami, Florida discussing the problems of road rage in the city. If anyone has ever felt road rage, or any kind of rage this is for you.
...he information provided in this article can help reduce collisions on the road and help to save officers and emergency responders’ lives on the road.

Harvey Parnell once said that “[at] one time public roads in Arkansas were so bad that the wild geese, honking southward, would go around them.” In 1927, Parnell, as Lieutenant Governor, helped get the legislation for the Martineau Road Plan passed in the State Legislature. This legislation dealt with the improvement of the state highway system. Parnell also proposed the building of roads in the rural areas connecting outlying communities with the main state highway. Parnell, and Martineau before him, worked to make sure that the new highway system would not be paid for by personal property taxes but by the taxes on gasoline and vehicle licenses. This way the people paying for the new highway would be the people who actually use it. As ...
The anti-Wal-Mart activists believe that the creation of giant discount stores in the rural regions of the United States will lead to their economic and cultural destruction. With economic impact studies, they show that Wal-Mart's incredible gains are in fact taken from other local merchants, whom finally run out of business. According to Sarah Anderson, an economic analyst with an anti Wal-Mart stance, the establishment of a new store near a small town destroys more jobs in independent businesses than it actually creates in hiring local workers (1994). Moreover, a Wal-Mart funded community impact study in Greenfield, Massachusetts demonstrated that the construction of a new mega store would create 274 jobs. But in long terms, the community projects to lost about the same amount in the locally owned competing businesses (Sarah Anderson, 1994). The anti Wal-Mart activists are also concerned by the return of the profits in its adoptive community. The economic spin-off of the money spent in local business is largely superior than with the discount store. But almost all the profits made in a Wal-Mart are returned...
Dangers on roadways is an issue that describes the discrepancy between perception and reality of road rage. The media, for some odd reason, tends to make road rage a huge controversial issue. As seen on talk shows from Oprah Winfrey to CNN, they reveal to people that road rage could happen at any time and to always be looking over your shoulder. These talk shows and news programs also put fear into our minds by explaining that most roadragers often use guns to kill or injure their victims. Glassner contradicts the media's speculations by stating that out of approximately 250,000 people killed on roadways between 1990-1997, AAA attributed that one in one thousand was an act of road rage (pg.5).
Race-based traffic stops are dangerous for people of color, since they can happen anytime; various African Americans and Latinos modify their driving habits in uncommon ways. For example, some completely avoid predominately white suburbs, in fear of police involvements for looking out of place. Some intentionally drive ordinary vehicles or change his or her dressing style, and others who drive long distances even factor in extra time for the inescapable traffic stops (Harris).
While facing North, sitting stationary for a red traffic signal on Leo Kidd Avenue, I observed a blue, 4 door Kia traveling West on Ridge Road in the left lane. When the traffic signal turned green, I proceeded to cross the intersection of Ridge Road. However, the Kia continued to travel West through the steady red light almost causing a collision.
When Wal-Mart establishes itself in a town, it makes its competitors to close their businesses since they cannot compete in the current market. There are several businesses that go out of business when this company sets up a branch in the town. However people don’t agree with this since customers are the ones who go to purchase goods from Wal-Mart. If there are people who should be blamed are the customers since they flock into the retail market to buy from them. This is the reason why these retail businesses are out of business. The reason that makes customers go to shop at Wal-Mart is that, there is ample parking, low prices and they also provide superior goods and services to the customers.Down town destruction started earlier before Wal-Mart was established. Wal-Mart is trying to bring with it new technologies that are aimed to cope with the current technologies. We ought to find new ways of doing things and this is exactly what is happening with Wal-Mart. For instance, Wal-Mart might be embracing technology to supplant it. Internet shopping might be some of the new business technologies that they are trying to embrace.
Throughout its nearly 60 year history, the Interstate Highway System has served the United States of America far beyond its original goals. From its original purposes of uniting the country and aiding defense to the more mundane, (but equally important)such as ferrying goods across the country, the Interstate Highway System has firmly entrenched itself as one of the greatest feats of engineering the world has ever known. Record setting bridges, tunnels, and length of pavement have all been made by the vast expanse of the IHS FACT. As Dwight D. Eisenhower, then president, stated “Together, the united forces of our communication and transportation systems are dynamic elements in the very name we bear -- United States. Without them, we would be a mere alliance of many separate parts” (http://todayinsci.com/Events/Transport/HighwayInterstate-Quotations.htm 22 Feb 1955)
Safety is a major issue within the city of Detroit. About 40 percent or more of Detroit’s 88,000 streets were not functioning. This is very dangerous for these specific reasons such as since the crime rate in Detroit is at an all-time high it puts citizens more at risk because if it’s dark out it is very hard to see your surroundings and makes an easy target for criminals. Another reason is that it will be very hard for you to see walking around. Suppose if a car doesn’t have its lights on and you walk across the street while the car is coming and your life could be taking away that quickly due no streetlights being functional which could have been avoided if the streetlight were functional in the first place .
Wal-Mart was interested in the compartment of Katrina’s hurricane for a number of reasons. Though it was a means by which it was giving back to the society, Wal-Mart stood to lose immensely from the impacts of the hurricane. It runs lots of chain stores along the Gulf coast where the hurricane Katrina struck hard. Loss projections were eminen...
Whenever a huge corporation such as Walmart moves into an area with local stores and merchants, all of them are bound to go out of business because all the customers will be attracted to the huge selections and discount. There has been huge protest by these merchants and locals whenever a Walmart is being decided to be implanted there. This hurts their business which can make families go bankrupt and although it can create job opportunities within the Walmart but as you know Walmart has really bad working conditions such as no wages and unfair treatment. Walmart is also to be said to be the most poorly run and understaffed retail store. In previous studies Walmart was shown to be listed as the lowest in customer satisfaction. If you have visited a Walmart previously you might have seen the customers swarming over just 2 or 3 checkout lanes. In recent days Walmart has been better about this by opening more lanes up whenever there are more
If a person is to walk into a Wal-Mart most people can agree that it is a very convenient store having a wide variety of not only beverages and food, but other sections as well. The store has cosmetics, toys, electronic devices, crafts, and clothes. This happens to not only be half of what the store actually carries. This makes Wal-Mart the perfect shopping place to pick up all needs from garden utensils and plants as well as a new TV for a super bowl with their layaway feature! To top it all off this super store is open twenty four hours a day for any purchase that needs to be made. It is four in the morning and forgot the year anniversary is in the morning! Not to worry! Wal-Mart is open to pick up a diamond necklace and a set of matching earrings. Making Wal-Mart one of the superstores that anyone could really want in their town. All in all Wal-Mart is a phenomenal store to have in a town especially with lowest prices around. These examples are the only positive reasons for having a Wal-Mart being placed where an average of 179,000 square feet of trees are supposed to reside, but they are not just trees. They are
III. Connection: Everday we have to deal with these people on our roads. We run a great risk just driving around the corner to go to the store or a quiet trip to church. According to U.S. News and World Report, the U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that two-thirds of fatalities are at least partially caused by aggressive driving. Fortunately, there is something we can do about it.
