Most girls who dance on a high school dance team, either used to, or continue to dance at a dance studio. No, they are not like dance moms. Clearly you dance in both but the style and set up are very different between the two. The basis of each are similar however. While dance studios and dance teams do have some similarities, they are for the most part very different. For the first similarity, the moves and technique are similar for dance team and studio. In each, the tricks are the same. For example, you would do turns and leaps in both. Or acro tricks like ariels and back handsprings. It is the same at all of the competitions of who can compete against each other from each school or studio with one difference. All schools and studios can send solos, duos, trios and small groups to competitions. Small groups are considered groups of four to nine people. Anything larger is a large group and those compete at the studio competitions. However at school competitions, you also have to compete the whole team. Additionally, you still do the same four things as above, just not a large group. In studios, you only compete with certain people from your team and not everyone on it, like at school dance competitions. The studio competitions are much larger and longer most of the time. There are normally more girls because all ages from 3-18 compete instead of just high school. The next big difference from these is the rules. For dance team, there is a much more extensive list of rules for MSHAA dance teams. One example would be what we can wear. At studios, there are little to no rules. The costumes can be as simple, or complex as you want. In dance team, you can not show any midriff or skin on your back or block your vision at all. A new rule this year is that we cannot change the music we use at all unless we pay for music rights. For studio, we can do whatever we want to the music. There are not many rules at dance studio competitions compared to dance team on what we can do in our routines. There is a limited number of lifts and tricks we can do at dance team competitions and at studio get as creative as you want and the more points you get. There has been two different studios on the show Dance Moms.One in Pittsburgh and one in Los Angeles.The the dance group moved to the new studio in LA after being in the old one for four seasons of the show.
The winning team in a dance competition is determined by a panel of judges. Some may argue that because the teams are not facing off head to head, dance is not qualified as a sport. However, a deeper look into the sport of gymnastics validates otherwise. There is no doubt gymnastics is an extremely difficult sport, which is why it is presented along with many other sports in the Olympics. The scores of the competitors are solely determined on the scores that the panel of judges decides to give them. I went to see the Parsons Dance Company on Tuesday April 9th. It was a very interesting show. There were actually many different techniques that I observed in this performance. This company uses many different forms of dance all into one technique, which makes them a unique company.
Competitive cheerleading is where a team has exactly two minutes and thirty seconds to present a routine that incorporates jumping, stunting, tumbling, and dancing choreographed to music. Teams consist of anywhere from 5-36 boys and girls who compete against other teams that have a similar level of ability as well as number of athletes. Teams compete against other teams at a competition just like a match, meet, or game. Allstar cheerleading is completely different than gymnastics, and sideline cheerleading. The typical idea of a dancer is that they are tall, slender, full of energy, and lucky because they dance with all of the “stars”. Much of this is true, however, what many people do not think of are the many hardships that a dancer goes through in order to achieve their high status in the dance world. It takes much hard work and determination along with good direction to become a dancer. However, nothing good comes without a price. Dancers often times have many pressures put on them which can lead to physical and emotional damages. These damages occur through the pressures from the media, parents, teammates, and the stereotype that society has placed on dancers.
It’s a tough process because there is no set way for creating a routine. All cheerleading squads have their strengths and weakness’. Dance education at the secondary level also needs to get highly skilled teachers who are also certified in dance themselves. It would also help attract more students if dance was presented in a different department other than physical education. Dance education at the college level is taught by certified dance instructors, therefore dancers at this level are able to explore movements, while being critiqued by someone who knows what is happening. Dance education has played a major role in the development of children of all ages, and will continue to do so, as long as dance educators and dancers have the proper support.
Contemporary dance first originated from ballet, however changed when Isadora Duncan decided that she didn’t want to dance ballet. She disregarded the refined technical Classical ballet and thus the concept of Contemporary dance was born. This style incorporates movements where the body moves freely and doesn’t have restrictions, embodying raw human emotion. Preparing for competition is easier said than done, you need a passion to complete the task. Competition is extremely stressful, but amazing at the same time. It?s a process of mixed emotions, not knowing if it?s importance will have a meaning in the end. Having practice six times a week allows us to work on our jumps, cheers, dances, tumbling, and the most difficult, stunting. Just the counts and lifting people in the air is traumatic enough, but repeating it over and over again it gets strenuous. Dancing is relaxing when you have counts to them, but when you have to learn the dance to the music people get confused and don?t know when to leave to the next formation. Team members start getting fed up with each other at the closing stages of practice, it?s just a natural human reaction after practicing with the same fifteen to twenty girls for three hours.
