Most girls who dance on a high school dance team, either used to, or continue to dance at a dance studio. No, they are not like dance moms. Clearly you dance in both but the style and set up are very different between the two. The basis of each are similar however. While dance studios and dance teams do have some similarities, they are for the most part very different. For the first similarity, the moves and technique are similar for dance team and studio. In each, the tricks are the same. For example, you would do turns and leaps in both. Or acro tricks like ariels and back handsprings. It is the same at all of the competitions of who can compete against each other from each school or studio with one difference. All schools and studios can send solos, duos, trios and small groups to competitions. Small groups are considered groups of four to nine people. Anything larger is a large group and those compete at the studio competitions. However at school competitions, you also have to compete the whole team. Additionally, you still do the same four things as above, just not a large group. In studios, you only compete with certain people from your team and not everyone on it, like at school dance competitions. The studio competitions are much larger and longer most of the time. There are normally more girls because all ages from 3-18 compete instead of just high school. The next big difference from these is the rules. For dance team, there is a much more extensive list of rules for MSHAA dance teams. One example would be what we can wear. At studios, there are little to no rules. The costumes can be as simple, or complex as you want. In dance team, you can not show any midriff or skin on your back or block your vision at all. A new rule this year is that we cannot change the music we use at all unless we pay for music rights. For studio, we can do whatever we want to the music. There are not many rules at dance studio competitions compared to dance team on what we can do in our routines. There is a limited number of lifts and tricks we can do at dance team competitions and at studio get as creative as you want and the more points you get. Overall, there is a much more extensive list of rules for high school dance teams over studio dance competitions. That is the biggest however not the only difference between the
