Day Of Emotions
Dance is my favorite hobby when I was a child. I used to watch dance concerts on TV shows, but I had not even watch it on stage. On April 08th, 2016, I attended a dance concert called Make Your Move like an audience. It was performed at John Anthony Theatre – Spring Creek Campus of Collin College. The concert consists of many styles of dancing from different College and University such as Collin College, West Texas A&M University, and Illinois State University. Three performances that I like best were Intus, 9.28.11 and Havana Dream.
Intus was a production of choreographer Sara Mott with the music theme called Tied Knots by The Album Leaf. Intus is a Latin word meaning “inside, within, from within”. “What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside you” (Ralph Waldo Emerson). In contrast with two pieces above, Havana Dream was a very jazzy and playful. The music, the costume, and the dance were all very colorful and full of energy. All of that made this piece very fun and entertaining. Seven girls with seven colors on their tanks as well as the colorful of the theme made me so excited with this performance. As the title suggests, this was a dream of almost people who want to go to the colorful and beautiful place – Havana, Cuba’s capital. All the dance steps and movements of the dancers were rehearsed well. The music was enough upbeat and fast to depict the playful and youthful of this performance. Although there were many dancers on stage, the dancers had utilized the space well and the present of them had created a full and dynamic stage. This piece was a best colorful performance in this
The next work of the program, Courtly Airs and Dances, is a multi-movement work composed by Ron Nelson. The piece is split into six movements: Intrada, Basse Danse, Pavane, Saltarello, Sarabande, and Allemande. Each of these present distinct characteristics that separate it from each other movement, yet all are united by being a style of dance. They would dance contemporary to Holiday’s slower jazz songs, which were also her songs with the most serious stories told in them. Performing this style of dance helped to tell the story of hers songs. The dance truly helped to accentuate the message of the song “Strange Fruit.” This song describes the horrific lynchings that took place in the Jim Crow South. The contemporary choreography to this song showed the sadness and confusion that many people felt towards the lynchings. The dancers would come onto the stage in small groups of two or three, and I noticed many of them would do a slow, controlled grand battement followed by dropping their torsos to their feet when they brought their legs back down. They would then proceed to exit the stage, and be followed by the next group of dancers. When I watched this, I felt as though the dancers were showing the pain and despair that people felt before lynchings, and how they next lynching would happen soon

The choreography for “The Green Table” cannot exactly be categorized as one thing or another. Jooss seems to employ two different types of dance: one being the traditional ballet, and the other being the modern technique. The use of traditional ballet can be seen in the dance of the soldiers with their light and graceful movements, particularly the one carrying the white flag. Contrary to this, the heavier, more central movements of dancers such as Death and the Partisan Woman illustrate modern dance technique similar to movements choreographed by Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey. The fact that Jooss utilizes both of these dance forms demonstrates his unique theories and adds a personal touch to this show. However, movement is not his only means of self-expression.
However, because this is a reduction of that piece, the sculpture has been taken out of its original context entirely. Placed atop a pedestal and surrounded by modern paintings within the DIA, Genius of the Dance becomes its own free standing work of art. It is here, that I began to realize how the context of an artwork can affect the viewers experience. Without prior knowledge of larger monumental stone sculpture, Genius of the Dance, is able to be viewed from all angles. Allowing viewers to walk around and experience the piece as a single composition. Likewise, because the piece is separated from the other figures and primarily focused on only one, viewers are also given the opportunity to appreciate Carpeauxs technique and rendition of a single figure without all of the other distractions (walls that prevent you from walking around it or nymph figures that draw your eye to more than one single moment) that may accompany it. Unfortunately, because the piece is taken out of its original context there are also a few downfalls. These include the opportunity to enjoy other moments of the piece such as, the nymphs who bring playfulness, energy and delicacy, the foliage of drapery and hair that bring a feeling of airiness, and finally the angelical wings that complete the central figure Dance. Over Halloween weekend, Dance TCU in concert, performed at Ed Landreth Hall on the TCU campus, was a mid term showcase performed by the students in the TCU School for Classical and Contemporary Dance. The overall mood was very professional. These college level dancers performed various pieces from Giselle to video edited versions of dance to contemporary dances inspired by swing dancing. Each piece was unique and whether the style was classical or contemporary, the execution was very good. The quality of the performance was spectacular and showed all the work that everyone involved in the production has put out to perfect all the aspects of the show come together. Jazz is a music genre that is very rich in culture which is why I decided to attend a Jazz concert. This was my first Jazz event I had ever been to. I went to see the band The Chairman and the Board. This was a blues swing band. Having been to other concerts, I was expecting something similar as far as atmosphere and crowd. I was proved very wrong as this concert defied all my expectations and was in a whole different field as far as life entertainment goes. The first thing I noticed right off the bat was the audience. The age range of this audience was mainly 40-70. I definitely felt like the odd man out when I was there. It did get me thinking though, why was this audience so much older? This is a perfect portrayal of a natural happening outside the performance hall. The dancers are actually not confined within the studio as the outside world is transformed into a natural studio. The overall effect on the performance is a lively dance that keeps the audience glued to the last minute. First off, I was comparing the spring concert to the senior showcase. In comparison the senior showcase was so much better and this time around it seemed a little ill rehearsed. However, although that was my initial opinion it turned out a little better than what I thought.
Music is a way to get away from our problems for sometime, it is something that relaxes us, and puts us in a better mood. For which on Monday, February 29, 2016, I went to see the Skyline Jazz Ensembles to lighten up my mood. The event took place at Yoshi’s in Oakland, California. It was performed by Skyline high school students. The concert started at 9:00 pm and ended at 10:00 pm. There were different styles of musical performances presented, they presented several combos and small ensembles highlighting student arrangements and compositions.
Also, the performers are constituted with same number of men and women. They imply the importance of equality through the performance. The female and male dancers use the same movements to show that they are equal. The message being conveyed here is important, on the grounds of its social influence and giving the whole performance a deeper meaning. The thing makes dancing different and odd to other occupations is the fact that most famous and well known dancers are mostly females, since on other social circumstances males tend to dominate more realms. Here, besides all the female masters, the male dancers appear as much as the female artists do and they also showcase what they are capable of. As I watched more of the performance, the interactions between dancers and the LED lights became more appealing to me. Dancers use their bodies to interpret the connections between human beings and technology. Moreover, the background music also plays a vital role in the production of this whole piece of art. The tempo of the music, the dance movements, as well as the frequency of the lights going on and off together appeared to the audience as a desirable combination. I love how the dancers do every movements according to the rhythm of the music and how they two fit perfectly. All of those things together made a great show to watch and
The ISO, International Symphony Orchestra, performed an outstanding concert at Marysville High School with ten entertaining, yet drastic, pieces. Entering the High School I was quite thrilled to hear a familiar piece – Little Fugue in G minor by composer Bach, performed by a quartet of a tenor, two altos, and bari saxophone. What was even more exciting was that it was performed by students who attend Marysville High School. Once sitting down in the large auditorium which I am familiar with, my friends and I discussed the aspects of the orchestra on the stage. We were curious how full their sound will be with only three flutes, two clarinets, two bassoons, three oboes, three trumpets, and the rest of the ensemble with the minimal amount of specific instrumentation. Frankly, we were “dazzled” as the program pamphlet stated. The sound was much more than what was expected. In fact, it sounded almost double of the amount of fullness coming from the High School Band I used to perform with.
