Friendship is built on complete trust in oneself and others. In the short story, “Damon and Pythias,” two boys undergo a test of true friendship as Damon’s life is on the line. The boys show the readers that trust is a necessity in a strong bond between friends. Damon and Pythias prove the “depth of their devotion” to one another through immense acts of kindness and loyalty. Damon and Pythias keep their promises and stay faithful to one another. Dionysius, the ruler of Syracuse, is demanding that Pythias retracts his statement defying kings. Pythias is stubborn on his statement that “kings have too much power and that their laws are not good for their subjects.” After being asked to retract his statement, Damon volunteers to be kept prisoner until Pythias returns. Their friendship with be known after Pythias returns as long as Damon is held. Damon has complete trust in Pythias as he states that he …show more content…

Damon sacrifices his life after being held captive with the king. Additionally, Pythias held his promise and was strong, even in rough times when he has trouble on sea. When Damon is about to be executed, Pythias runs into the room, bearing his wounds from the boat. This shows complete selflessness between the boys and demonstrates that they would die for one another. This friendship is built on many valuable aspects, trust being the most. Without trust in one another, Damon would not have volunteered himself. Dionysius revokes his statement in the end of the story and begins to lean how friendship is impactful. The immense faithfulness the boys had in another showed Dionysius how he can become a great friend. Dionysius can not “resist the power of us having constancy.” He revokes the sentence as his eyes and heart are opened to the possibilities of a strong friendship.
