D-Day took place on June 6, 1944, on the beaches of Normandy. These beaches were controlled by the Germans and occupying them was the main priority for both sides of the war. The United States agreed with the Allied powers to focus on defeating the German Nazis before fighting against Japan. The battles of D-Day were some of the bloodiest battles of the war. The United States was joined by the United Kingdom and Canada to take over the beach. After an Allied victory, the war soon ended, announcing an Allied victory. Saving Private Ryan accurately displays D-Day, by showing the audience the realistic nature of the battle, replicating the same uniforms, and even using some of the same tactics as the Allied powers in 1944. Also while the soldiers are still on the boats, you can see many of them are worried, either shaking in fear or praying to God for safety. The main character is Captain Miller, portrayed in the early minutes as a leader and a strong man who is not afraid of the pressure. Captain Miller is faced with an impossible situation: he is to take out the machine guns and make way for the heavy artillery to land on the beach. The only objective for Captain Miller is to make his way inland and take out as many guns as possible. Right out of the gate, the viewer sees many soldiers die and does not see victory as being possible, but with the use of wise tactics, Captain Miller can defeat the enemy. The story that Speilburg wants you to see in this opening scene is the horror and reality of the battles of D-Day. This is also why this first scene is extremely gory, this is most prevalent when Captain Ryan is dragging a soldier to the medic and then goes over a mine and the soldier is blown in half.
