Canon Penny Mrs Justus English 5/28/24 Cyrano de Bergerac Literary Analysis Cyrano de Bergerac is a romantic tragedy written in 1897 by Edmund Rostand, a French poet and dramatist. #Although Cyrano de Bergerac is Rostands most famous(qa) work, he has written(sv) many other plays including The Romancers (1894), Chantecler (1910), and L’Aiglon (1900). #Throughout the play, two main themes are displayed, the first being appearance vs reality and the second theme being true love vs superficial love. #Although these two themes appear throughout the whole play, the theme of appearance vs reality is far more prevalent(qa). Another example of appearance vs reality is Cyrano, and how he grossly exaggerates the size of his nose. The best example of this is when Cyrano is speaking to the bore about the size of his nose, “How now? Isn’t soft and dangling, like a trunk? Is it crooked like an owl’s beak?” (Cyrano de Bergerac Act 1 scene 4). His nose may be unusually large, but in reality, if he truly loved someone and they loved him back for who he was, the size shouldn't get in the way. #Shown in various ways throughout the play, the theme of appearance vs reality is extremely prevalent(qa).#Although the theme is displayed in many characters throughout the play, the most obvious is in Cyrano. The deception and fear of rejection that comes with the theme are used to show the reader the importance of honesty. Rostand's view is clearly shown through the events in the play. Rostand shows(sv) that honesty is important in our lives, when lies are told things go wrong, and even when the truth is eventually told, not everything is perfectly(ly) fine.
