The most influential factor of domestic violence is the generational cycle of abuse or a history of abuse in the family. Children who grow up in an environment where control is maintained through verbal threats, intimidation, and physical violence, are more likely to resort to these same methods as adults.
Violence is either taught by example or accepted as normal. A young boy may see his father come home or work drunk and angry. He watches as his mother tries to please and placate his father to “keep the peace.” This teaches the boy that even though his father is wrong, it still brought about favor and ultimately, control.

Individuals that experience the loss of physical health or loss of their job. It peaks during the Christmas season as husbands, fathers, and single parents face the pressure of paying bills or buying Christmas gifts. The frustration of the inability to make ends meet increases conflicts at home. Feelings of helplessness mount. Anger flares. In the face of lacking coping mechanisms, violence erupts in the home and everyone loses. Families or individuals who are exposed to domestic violence often experience physical, mental or spiritual shifts that can endure and worsen if they are not addressed. The Centers for Disease Control estimates three in every ten women, and one in 10 men in the United States who experienced physical violence by an intimate person in their life, reported at least one measured impact of effect related to forms of violent behavior in that relationship.
Victims of domestic violence may experience similar types of abuse, however, the response varies from person to person. It can have a serious impact on the way a person thinks and interacts with the world around them.
