Finally after a few decades of work in his respective profession, the elder gets an opportunity to enjoy life in his golden years. However, in the context of Dr. James Curtsinger’s article, the ‘golden years’ refers to a species’ reproductive time. The author mentions that despite where we come from and who we may be in this life, the quality of our lives, especially after reproduction, is not as important as being able to pass on our genetic material onto the next generations. Horatio Alger was an author in the late nineteenth century; he wrote books to little boys on the American Dream. Alger’s books seemed to hark back to an older time when the American Dream was quite different than it was in his time. He subscribed to thoughts of morality, individualism and the competence; but keeps the contemporary idea of fruitfulness. Alger wrote many books to encourage young boys to be moral and work hard.
Many people may view something differently than others, this is usually and interpretation. An interpretation is an action of explaining the meaning of something or it can be an explanation of a way to explain something. We have all made interpretations about something and we do it often. Eric Forner and Howard Zinn had different interpretations of the gilded age, which was a time period where the United States population and economy quickly grew with a lot of corruption. Their ways of explaining this era was different from one another.

My most notable achievements include serving as a Presbyterian minister, serving in the First Church in Litchfield, CT, and being asked to be the Professor and President of Theology at Lane Seminary. I am especially known for being a successful revivalist and my ideas are ones that many Americans can connect and relate with. During the course of my career, I supported the Temperance Movement, suggested an easier way to deal with slavery, and aided with moral reform.
"Gilded" means covered with a layer of gold. The Gilded Age was an era known by a derogatory name. This era had great economic boosting but corruption caused by corporate dominance of politics and to the oppressive treatment of those left behind in the scramble for wealth. Of course, Howard Zinn (author of History is a Weapon; A People's History of the United States) and Eric Foner (author of Give Me Liberty; An American History) had different perspectives of the Gilded Age. Zinn thought mainly about economic growth which helped the United States overall, but Foner without a doubt focused more on politics.
Hurston’s “The Gilded Six-Bits” is a story about the changing relationship of Missie May and Joe Banks after their morals and values are tested with material items. A clear message in “The Gilded Six-Bits” is one that contradicted the beliefs of the American society during this time period, the idea that money or the urban life would bring happiness to the American household. Early in the story, Missie May and Joe Banks are a happy couple. They live an average and modest lifestyle, but are content with what they have because their relationship is what mattered most to them. However, the arrival of a character that represents a materialistic way of life turns their marriage around because they began to want the wealth most people wanted. In “The Gilded Six-Bits”, Missie May’s character is a character that is loving, innocent, and vulnerable, and she provides an excellent example and connection to the themes in Hurston’s story of marriage, love and betrayal.

Even though undefined, in the short story “The Short Happy Life Of Francis Macomber” Masculinity is the main theme developed through the uses of imagery, symbolism and irony. At the beginning of their African Safari Hunt, Francis Macomber struggles to deal with his fear of death, while his wife takes part in adulterous activities with the leader of the hunt, Robert Wilson. Wilson is everything that Macomber is not. Brave and courageous, Wilson is desired by Margot for possessing all of the masculine qualities, and even her marriage to Macomber does not stop her from getting what she wants. Francis Macomber must overcome his fears and reach the epitome of his masculinity if he hopes to return from this African Safari with his wife, and most importantly his own life.

At first glance the terms “success” and “aging” seem to be in conflict to each other. When asking people about aging, their answers have many facets that are also found in psychological definitions: successful aging is seen as health, maturity and personal growth, self-acceptance, happiness, generativity, coping, and acceptance of age-related limitations. In the psychological sense successful aging is also often seen as the absence of age-associated characteristics (Strawbridge, Wallhagen, & Cohen, 2002). It seems that successful aging means is not aging.
