This paper analyzes a case study ‘Faith and Health’ using Cultural intelligence, in which Anna, a hospital nurse feels frustrated with the behavior of a male Muslim patient Abdul Hadi, while trying to accommodate his needs, at the hospital. The paper analyzes this situation due to cross cultural challenges in terms of national, regional and individual levels. Applying the Cultural Strategic thinking, the paper tries to provide strategy to address the five behavioral needs outlined in the case study. For identified behavioral needs, the paper develops a cultural strategic thinking and then finds required strategies to resolve the issues. The difficulty Adbul Hadi’s has in accepting help from Anna to cleanse his body, could be more related to his personal comfort and beliefs developed from his individual culture. Anna is willing to help him, but that alone doesn’t suffice. Anna should first attempt to understand, each individual may have their own comfort levels and beliefs, which could also be due to their religious and cultural traditions.
Since Anna is the one delivering service to the patient, she should try to understand the cultural difference and accordingly adapt her strategies. For this purpose, Anna should use the technique of Connecting New Information to know more about people’s lifestyle and beliefs in the Islamic countries. The issue of many relatives visiting Abdul Hadi, causing disturbance to others, could be due to lack of proper understanding of the negative impact from too many people visiting the patient at the hospital. This might be due to poor educational back ground as-well. Hospital Management should provide counselling to Abdul Hadi and the visitors, sharing the implications of too many visitors visiting the patient at hospital. On her part, Anna should follow the technique of ‘Thinking, Being, and Staying Positive’. This will help her in performing her job better.

Issues of culture are often controversial. LaBorde (2010) has noted that culture is always a factor in conflict. Ironically, conflict can provide nurses with an excellent opportunity for developing compassion that will lead nurses unto a place of meeting in which there is a deep respect for differences and equally intentional openness to the possibility of connection. Healthcare practitioners are confronted in a daily basis with the practical manifestation of these issues. In particular, nurses are more confronted by cultural issues than the other healthcare providers because nurses spend majority of their time with patients. However, some nurses are reluctant to confront and discuss the cultural issues because of lack of knowledge in dealing with patients of diverse cultures (Tjale & Villiers, 2004).
Culture defines how people relate with their colleagues and the people outside their world (OECD, 2003). Culture has a central role when it comes to the way humans behave. In this case, the doctors must learn how the culture of the society inclines to a particular issue of interest to them (Phipps, 2003). Having learned that, they would be in a better position to handle the patient with professionalism and simultaneously involve them to drive out most of the medical information they may need. Another way is having a physician for a particular patient whom the patient can share the problem with after they have established a good rapport. In creating a serene environment for them to dispel fears that they may have, and by create an interactive atmosphere (OECD, 2003). Patients will engage the physician in talks that will be useful in disclosing the information needed for the diagnosis.
A cultural assessment interview is very important when taking care of patients or their families who may be from a different culture than the nurse’s. In order to be able to better take care of a patient, we first need to know their own interpretation of disease and illness within their cultural context, values, and beliefs. Since I am Indian and my culture is a mix of the Indian cultural beliefs and my religion Islam, I was looking forward to this interview so that I am able to learn more about different cultures using my assessment.
Going to a different country or area of the world can open up anybody’s eyes to see that culture makes a huge impact on the understanding and practices of healthcare that seem to be so common to other areas of the world. When a person lives in one country their whole life, that person may not realize how different the life they live is from someone in a foreign country. Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences having such a diverse variety of students has their own cultural competency definition that states “effectively and comfortably communicate across cultures with patients of differing backgrounds, taking into account aspects of trust in order to adopt mutually acceptable objectives and measures”. In the book Dancing Skeletons: Life and Death in West Africa by Katherine Dettwyler, the issue of culture and healthcare are greatly prevalent. Katherine Dettwyler herself goes to West Africa as an anthropologist and her horizons are broadened when during her research she comes in contact with how much culture has an impact on healthcare and everyday life.
