Although Yang believes that he is “faithful word to word as to the original play” (Allan), it is clear to the audience that the play retains only the barebones of Shakespeare’s text. For example, the stage time of supporting characters (such as Laertes and Horatio) are minimized, Hamlet’s soliloquies are significantly shortened, and the Fortinbras subplot was completely removed. Stage time is instead devoted to the Shamanist rituals that features slow paced and deliberate movement in which characters communicate with the dead; specifically, between Hamlet and his father, between Laertes and Ophelia, and within Hamlet, as he slowly loses consciousness and inches towards death. In an interview with Hongik University in 2010, Yang describes his conception of Hamlet as a distinctively Korean story and underscores the importance of the rituals to his production: that the play itself is a “ritual” that enables the “resentful Korean [characters]” to achieve “harmony and spiritual relief” through Shamanist rituals that “reunites the deceased with those who are alive” (Choe). While these “reunions” bring emotional anguish to the characters in the play, they also prompt the characters to act and move the plot forward. In David Tennant’s version of Hamlet, the use of the characters’ physical antics, interactions with each other, the stark similarities between the characters, and the way they dress, changes how the audience interprets each character’s actions and contribution to the play as a whole, which then determines how successful this version of Hamlet is.

Whether something as little as a "hello" by a crush or a death in a family, they contribute to the difference, as they are all equal in importance. In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, the protagonist Hamlet struggles throughout his life as he is in search of his true identity. The Webster's dictionary, under the second definition, defines identity as "The set of behavioral or personal characteristics by which an individual is recognizable as a member of a group." As life only moves forward for Hamlet, he struggles to find his place in life, nonetheless to revenge the murder of his father.
Hence, Hamlet, as with all plays, can be interpreted in various ways. The Cambridge University Press audio version fits into a Aristotelian Tragedy or Revenge Tragedy, and provides a classic interpretation of the play. The movie Hamlet directed by Kenneth Baranagh also fits into these two interpretations however the omission of Fortinbras, results in the Denouement and the restoration of order is not addressed. This affects the meaning of the play as it portrays the sense that the play hasn’t quite finished as not everything has been resolved. A Freudian interpretation will dramatically alter several relationships affecting the meaning of the play as other changes are needed to be made to compensate these relationship changes.

The characters are given different façades in different situation and whilst interacting to different people. Stuck in her own interpretation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and the idea that “human nature is (nearly) the same” worldwide, an American Anthropologist, Laura Bohannan, set off for the Tiv in West Africa (Bohannan 1). Bohannan’s original intent was to learn about the African tribe’s culture and ceremonies, but one morning, when she was sitting with the elders of the tribe, they asked Bohannan to tell them the story of Hamlet, for they have told her many of their stories and found it only fair. In an attempt to translate the play into the Tiv’s language and finding the lack of appropriate words, as well as cultural differences between ideas many Europeans and Americans both agree upon, Bohannan quickly realized her original theory was incorrect.
The play, Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, shows human nature to be greedy, self-involved and vengeful. Claudius is driven by his greed to commit murder. Polonius is always looking out for himself, currying favor at the expense of anyone in his way. Hamlet thinks only of vengeance from the moment he finds out about Claudius murdering his father. In William Shakespeare's play Hamlet, the concept of cultural identity is explored through Hamlet's isolation which is created by the conflict between his duty to his father, and his duties to the monarchy and society. Hamlet is isolated from his society due to his turbulent emotions which result from his indecision on how to respond to his father's murder. Hamlet's duty as a son is to avenge his father's death and he would be supported in his actions by society if the murderer was believed to be guilty. Hamlet's duty as a citizen and a Prince is to protect the King and to ensure stability in the monarchy. In order for Hamlet to revenge his father he would have to kill the King which creates a conflict between his two primary duties. Because of this, Hamlet finds it difficult to decide how to proceed and which duty takes precedence, and Hamlet decides to gather evidence as proof of Claudius' guilt so that his revenge is justified to society and to himself. The 'unholiness' of murdering a king who is also a close relative is highlighted by Claudius and this allows the audience to better understand the conflict and the indecision facing Hamlet.
