Martial Arts in Movies
I have been a fan of martial arts movies since the late Bruce Lee so I figured Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, even though it was the winner of four academy awards, would just be another attempt to make a poor example of a kung fu movie that lacked culture and poor acting. Acting, scenery, choreography, and story line made this an incredibly good movie.
The movie features subtitles which I was impressed to see most foreign movies have overdubbed voice which takes away from the original feature. The setting for the movie takes place in China one of the places martial arts originated and creates a beautiful background for the entire picture. Acting was a big part in making this movie such a big hit. Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh make their presence known whenever they are on the screen.
The costume designs throughout the movie were ancient designs with a modern touch to them. The fight scene choreography was state of the art if you turned your head for one minute you were going to miss an eye popping move. The flying that the characters had the ability to do reminds me of the cinematography they used in the Matrix.
The roles of the females throughout the movie made it different then a traditional martial arts movie. They were a big impact on the characterization of the film. This film was all so was similar to an epic romance with moral instincts. Chow Yun-Fat is in love with Michelle Yeoh throughout the entire movie and his dying words were that he had always loved her.
My reaction to the film in contrast to Humanities is that the picture had all the aspects of a Greek tragedy. A hero goes out to avenge his masters death and falls in love and by getting his revenge ends up dying in the process. In other aspects it reminds me of war over clans or in humanities perspective war to over take another countries boundaries similar to Germany trying to take over most of Europe just like in Crouching Tiger Jade Fox and her clan were making themselves superior and known to every other clan.
Most films captivate the audience’s interest through the main character. This film did just that. Through the main character Li Cunxin, I was able to notice the amount of hard work and dedication which lead Li to become a famous ballet dancer known worldwide. The film based on the autobiography by Li Cunxin, “Mao’s Last Dancer” directed by Bruce Beresford is about a Chinese boy named Li Cunxin who was born into a large family of 6 boys. At the age of eleven, Li was selected from a poor Chinese village by Madam Mao’s cultural representatives to leave his family and study ballet in Beijing. The film focussed on his eventual departure from China to U.S.A after being selected by a world leading choreographer, Ben Stevenson and the consequences that followed.
The reason I attained this belief is that it is one of the most celebrated films of all time.People who watch it today still enjoy it and talk many things about it with other people. They used methods that the present audience would consider low-level today but were ahead of their time, especially with the special effects that were put in place. The performances done by the actors were so excellent that they are still remembered today for their work on this movie. Even, today, official reviews from organizations like Rotten Tomatoes gives very positive films. The film puts the present audience into awe over the effects in the aspects that are musical, graphics, and a plot that is made before the present audience was even
...similarities between the struggle of the mother and daughter to connect on a culture level. It also shows how the characters how control over their own destinies. Because these two characters was both to stubborn to even sit down and listen or agree on the same thing, it created unhappiness and controversy between the two. There are many different symbols throughout the story like such as the pendent that Jing mother gave her before her death. The pendent symbolized her mother’s love and concern for her but sadly she did not realize until after the death. This story grows on us because like I said before it is heartbreaking. It compares to women and daughters all around the world who are going through the same thing. It only takes time realize that you should follow your heart but at the same time be open to others suggestions because sometimes it for the best.
The pristine 1933 King Kong was constructed as a movie: to convey a story to entertain an audience. Peter Jackson’s 2005 remake took the substructure for King Kong and expanded upon it in virtually every way in order to “make again” the astoundment of the original for a modern-day audience. Audiences received the first King Kong very well. The stop-motion sequences of Kong were astounding for their time and the movie grossed over $90,000 in its beginning weekend. In order to bank upon its prosperity again, sequels were made and thus in 1976 a remake was made to amend upon the original. Paramount updated the movie to color, altered the story, and cast Jeff Bridges, a widely popular actor of the time, as the lead actor. Although the movie received stirred reviews, it did exceptionally well in the box office and tripled Paramount’s initial budget for the motion picture. Even though the movie wasn’t “as good” as the original, audiences still paid money to view it because of that hope that they would feel like they once did when they visually perceived the first King Kong. The remake add...
This movie is a wonderful production starting from 1960 and ending in 1969 covering all the different things that occurred during this unbelievable decade. The movie takes place in many different areas starring two main families; a very suburban, white family who were excepting of blacks, and a very positive black family trying to push black rights in Mississippi. The movie portrayed many historical events while also including the families and how the two were intertwined. These families were very different, yet so much alike, they both portrayed what to me the whole ‘message’ of the movie was. Although everyone was so different they all faced such drastic decisions and issues that affected everyone in so many different ways. It wasn’t like one person’s pain was easier to handle than another is that’s like saying Vietnam was harder on those men than on the men that stood for black rights or vice versa, everyone faced these equally hard issues. So it seemed everyone was very emotionally involved. In fact our whole country was very involved in president elections and campaigns against the war, it seemed everyone really cared.
The film Seven Samurai is about a village of farmers who have repeatedly suffered yearly raids by a group of merciless bandits. These bandits steal from the farmers and kidnap the women. Unable to protect themselves, the farmers decide to hire a samurai to do the job for them. This changes the course of their lives in numerous ways.
The story is based on a time just after the Civil War, a time when the modern western world which had just encroached upon the American West, condemning the Native American, began to engulf traditional Japan as well. The purpose of this film is to give a voice to these people, to share in their struggles and experiences and be enlightened, as the protagonist is, at their way of living and their out look on life and its purpose. The audience is simply people with a connection to the struggles of a culture undergoing rapid changes by modern development. Any person passionate about culture and tradition and simply, any person who can open their mind to a world unknown to them and to learn from it. As well as this we must recognize that it is a Hollywood production and its purpose first and foremost would be entertainment, and being able to satisfy the wants of the majority.
...movie that I fell in love with. But most of all I love how the story line is a great overlap into the cinematically engaging movie. There is a great use of camera, timing, shots and story line that are portrayed in this movie without being too overwhelming. This allows the audience to relax during the movie and just take in the scenes as a story from reality. To this day, and even still doing this paper I still come to find different aspects of the movie that I missed the previous times I have watched it.
Action – when someone in today’s generation hears the word action, their mind probably thinks of explosions, car chases, or hellacious gun fights. This film is far from that. The action portrayed in this film caught me off-guard as I was expecting at least something along the lines of what I mentioned above. City Lights has action that is bland like a bar of soap. I had to pay close attention to every detail in the movie to catch-on to the details. There were details throughout the entire movie that a regular person wouldn’t catch on to. The specific details that I am referring to are the hand gestures of the characters. It’s a silent film. There are no words spoken. There’s only hand gestures and facial expressions. I paid close attention
The movie takes a small look at a few individuals and takes a more personal but also satirical look at the old west. The film shows the truth of the old west, that it was a place where violent, uncomplicated men were the ones who built the culture and towns. The director just likes his main hero also took a morally grey approach to creating his movie. Where he emphasis how war and violence created some of the cultures of the American West. The movie really goes deep into the lifestyle of cowboys focusing on the greed and violence that can sometimes accompany such a lifestyle while also using the Civil War as a backdrop. Although panned by critics during its initial release today the films remain universally loved and is considered one of the greatest western movies of all time. I think this is because it takes a realistic and satirical approach to both cowboys and the western Civil War time period. Despite its shortcomings during its release and the limitation due to the technology of the time. The film over the years has managed to become a western classic that is surprisingly smart and witty, while also managing to keep its message
The movie, The Last Samurai, filled the theatres in 2003 with its suspenseful plot, exciting battle sequences and historical reference within the script. In the film, The Last Samurai, Americans were portrayed as an influential world power. Thus, a troubled American, Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is hired to teach the Japanese, American war tactics in order to fight in combat against the Samurai. Through a brutal journey of battle and strife, Nathan is faced with the life or death situation of fighting for his new home and for the last of the Samurai or battle for the land, he is not proud to call his own. The film makes use of the time period, politics, technology, and violence to illustrate the horrors of the real, America.
The film genuinely captures modern time with its design and composition. It is noticeable that the armor for the power rangers upgraded and looks more realistic than in the television series. The same goes for the Zords, Dino machines they fight in. Both costumes and setting show the advanced development of technology and how fashion has changed. The clothes each actor wears shows their personality in the film. The lighting and shadows in every scene capture exactly what needs to be
...director did not limit the film to its historical context but extended the same to romance and fantasy. From a different angle of view, the director made use of the theme to communicate with the viewers and the fictional characters can be considered as his tools. Besides, ample importance is given to historical and fictional characters. In short, the amalgamation of history, fantasy and romance constituted much to the film’s importance as a historical/fictional masterpiece.
Over the years there has been great progress in production and narration technologies. These advancements in technologies such as sound and visual effects, coupled with the lengthier evolution of characterisation and plot line/ backstory, create a more realistic cinematic experience which allows the audience to form more of an emotional attachment and level of both sympathy and empathy towards the characters, story and, subsequently, the overall film. This has granted filmmakers the ability to recreate and remake older films, such as King Kong, using newer, more effective filmmaking techniques.
The movie is all about the bravery of a Chinese girl named Mulan and her quest for honor. The movie is produced by Disney and the character can be added to the numerous princesses produced by this film institution. Mulan also set a trend in the line of movies produced by Walt Disney Pictures by having the setting in an Asian country and utilizing history to be part of the wonderful story. Furthermore, the movie also touched the tradition and culture of the Chinese which make it interesting to watch and fresh to the eyes. Add to these five emotional and well-written songs that adds flavor to the film. These songs provide the boost on emotion necessary to make the scenes more realistic in the ears of the audience.
