Critical Evaluation of a Magazine Advertisement
“Living in an age of advertisement, we are perpetually disillusioned.” ~J.B. Priestley sums up the reality of our media today. We are constantly being influenced and affected by advertisements and how we react to them. Advertisements have a great effect on us and how we operate. Advertisements attempt to control what we should wear, how we should look, what we should eat, what we should do, how we should think, and how we should smell. This magazine advertisement is very convincing of what type of perfume we should wear. “Moschino Couture!” uses an attractive woman, simplistic layout and sample perfume to sell us the product we all yearn for.
The first thing people notice when they see this ad is the bottle of perfume. Purpose accomplished. Naturally, when looking at a person you usually first make eye contact, but in this particular ad, the models’ eyes are covered by her hair which forces our eyes downward toward the bottle. The bottle is positioned directly below the models face where we will look next. Also, important to notice is that the featured object, the perfume, is not placed in the middle. When the point of focus is off-center it causes our eye to move through out the picture thus absorbing the entire advertisement. The subtle changes and adjustments the advertisement designers make has a huge effect on how the potential customer views the product.
Not surprisingly, the model is attractive, skinny and flawless, exactly what we tend to idolize. As a result, the ad is telling us that if we want to be as pretty or as immaculate as this person, we must wear this perfume which relates to using pathos. Also, there are very few colors in this picture...

...ottle looks three dimensional and real. The ribbon and the button around the bottle seem to look like a present. The words on the bottle are very easy to read and on the left side it is lighter then those lines on the right side. Since we read from the left to the right we follow the lighter part of the bottle toward the words and in addition, the dark sides on the left prevent out eyes from wandering off the page.
This advertisement is appealing to woman interested in buying perfume. Even if the buyer is not interested in perfume this ad makes you think that you need this particular perfume. The ad is very convincing and very well displayed. The company producing this advertisement has successfully caused the viewer or consumer to think twice when they see this ad and want to buy the product. This is what makes for a good magazine advertisement.
Advertisements are one of many things that Americans cannot get away from. Every American sees an average of 3,000 advertisements a day; whether it’s on the television, radio, while surfing the internet, or while driving around town. Advertisements try to get consumers to buy their products by getting their attention. Most advertisements don’t have anything to do with the product itself. Every company has a different way of getting the public’s attention, but every advertisement has the same goal - to sell the product. Every advertisement tries to appeal to the audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos, while also focusing on who their audience is and the purpose of the ad. An example of this is a Charmin commercial where there is a bear who gets excited when he gets to use the toilet paper because it is so soft.
There are several aspects to the layout of this advertisement. Women, regardless of age, tend to be drawn to the use of beautiful, younger women in an arrangement, which makes this design effective. Firstly, Taylor Swift (the young woman in the picture) has been properly dressed so that the lip-gloss she is using matc...
Perfume is important for a woman because its emphasize the style and mood that woman’s wear. A quote by Joybell C, “You are never fully dressed without perfume.” The ideal woman is an assortment of beauty, love, and attraction. Dior and Lanvin produce famous print ads that advertise women’s perfume. In Dior ad, it showed their new perfume called, “‘Miss Dior Blooming Bouquets.” which Natalie Portman partially clad in a wedding dress and she wear a black sexy body suit behind it. The white round shape words are in the middle of the ads, and the pink bottle of perfume is at the bottom. Lanvin’s perfume is called, “Marry Me”. A couple riding a bicycle together having a good time and staring at each other’s eyes which represent love
3. The demographic they are selling this product to is late teens early 20 something females. They are selling this product using allure, and popularity. They show a young woman attracting the notice of a “hot” guy and imply if you wear the perfume you can get a guy like that too. There is a lot of sex sells in this commercial.
The clear dominant part of the advertisement is the three human subjects placed in the middle. The first subject described is in the left hand side, sitting on a desk. The model is wearing traditional gendered beautification: pear necklaces; short dress; and high heels, this will lead to me believe she is representing a woman. When analyzing the pose of the woman, you can see the way she is sitting. The dress shows most of her leg, portraying the normative view of women as sexualized subject. This model is “doing gender” as West and Zimmerman described in their article. The model is representing a gender and therefore dressed and posed as a woman is expected to be in society. As she is leaning to the right, I no...
The advert is for a new product called ‘WOMAN’ that they are adding to their line of fragrances. The first thing that is noticed about this advert is the colour. It is very contrasting with the black and white, and gives a big impact to the audience. The white usually signifies innocence but with the black background it’s suggesting hidden depths, like a wild side that you could have. The model’s look is very confident, like she can get
And according to Everytown Research, in average, about 7 children/teens are killed every day due to gun related activities (Gun Violence by the Numbers). We hear on the news about all these tragic events, Aurora, Orlando, San Bernardino, Columbine, Sandy Hook. It doesn't matter where you find yourself, at the movie theater or at school, your life could always be threatened by a gun.. This ongoing war has caught the attention of thousands of people that have had their loved ones taken away so soon, or the ones that experienced an attempt on their life and were lucky enough to survive. This is why Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America was established on December 15 2012, the day after the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting happened (MDAGSA). A few months later the ad’s “Choose One” were
This connects to the stereotype that women in these adverts are unobtainable and that if we wear these glamorous and sophisticated clothes we will become like them. In one particular advert, the woman is seen on top of a table in a position that almost look statuesque, with all the men around the table regarding her and adoring her. This gives us the idea that she is so precious she is not even regarded as human, but as something from above, which makes us want to buy the clothes so we become as wanted as she is. Furthermore, the stereotype that women are used in men's advert as they will capture the man’s attention is seen in a specific advert that is trying to sell a man’s perfume as the perfume is specifically places on the woman’s torso. This is places there as men will contemplate the woman’s body in adornment and in turn see the perfume. This is also related to implied causality as the man will think that if he has that perfume he will be able to attract the perfect women , like the one in the advert. This stereotype of women seen as unattainable and unreal works for the selling of Dolce & Gabbana's products, as through their adverts they’re giving the illusion that if you have their products you will have the woman, so they are giving the audience a solution to a common

...s see that Polo consumers are sleek, clean cut type of guys, which are very confident with themselves. The producers want you to believe that this is the only fragrance that you should use to make you feel this way. The women’s perfume Estee Lauder appeals to the women who is not very confident with herself but wants to be. They try to get you to think that if you wear this fragrance then you to will be like he women in the picture sexy, confident, and successful. Although the two advertisements are about the same types of products there are differences in each, such as their body language, their attire, their sex. I like the way these two ads have sample smells of the product on the backs of them. This makes me want to buy these products even more now that I know what they smell like. So the producers are smart in their advertising and know just how to pull you in!
Along the bottom and side of the ad the luminescent eye shadows are supersized and crumbling working the reader's eye up the face. All of the lettering is white near the eye to provide contrast to the models darker skin and dark brown hair. The model's eyes are in stronger contrast to the rest of the ad to draw the reader's eye to these provocative features. The model herself plays into the motif of sex as she stares out to the observer with Marilyn Monroe's classic bedroom eyes, a slight squinting look with an implication of a little something else. Marilyn Monroe, a woman who was confident with herself and her body, was classic sex icon of her day even extending into now.
At the present time, perfume industry growth at a peak time, one of the reasons is the high profit margins, cited by Daily Mail in the UK, the cost of perfume actual production and ingredients is only three percent of the ninety-five percent of total profit of the company that selling perfume. Therefore, the competitors such as Jack Wills, Hollester, Burberry and etc. are expanding the product line to include fragrances. Although the number of competitor is increasing, Armani gets the benefit of standing on the top of perfume market. The adverts of Armani perfume appear to be more popular, compare with Armani jeans, which aims to bringing attention to the brand, but also its direct sales and promoting the new products. In the brand image building, Armani perfume plays a very important role. Moreover, differentiate tangible and visible product, advertisers try to use the sense of smell-related images, for example flowers, fruit garden, ocean and etc. also the design of the bottle outlook is a metaphor of perfume. Magazine advertisements are one of the most efficient ways to advertise products. A Nike advertisement for shoes chosen to be used as a source to find out how successful the advertisement was in advertising its product. I think that the target audience of the advertisement would be for all people ages twelve and older, for people with casual, and comfortable interests. Twelve and older would be a good age group for the product because the advertisement uses words of the advertisement that may possibly be confusing for the kids of a younger age than twelve to understand. Also, the advertisement would be well suited for all people with casual, and comfortable interests because in the advertisement it mentions that the product is suited for people
