The aim of this essay is to demonstrate the development of personal critical thinking skills by critical appraisal of a qualitative research article by Burhans and Alligood (2010). In drawing upon various literature, including an appraisal guide by Ingham-Broomfield (2014) and Solutions for Public Health (2010), the strengths and weaknesses will be highlighted in order to make an informed decision about the value of the research. Further, it will be argued that the findings have clinical significance including methods of implementation into nursing practice. It will conclude with a summery of the main points. The title is limited. It addresses the topic under investigation: quality care nursing. It identifies nurses as the demographic studied; …show more content…
The conclusion demonstrates that the findings can be implemented in a clinical setting and further recommends that the findings could be used to modify the nursing education criteria. The introduction is limited. Many critical aspects of a typical literature review are absent.
In quantitative research the literature review should explain the theoretic underpinnings of the research study. This assists to determine a gap in knowledge and therefore formulate a research question (Schneider et al., 2013). Burhans and Alligood (2010) identify that previous research has measured quality care employing quantitative approaches, which allows the researchers to formulate their research question based on a gap in knowledge. The aim/research question can be summarised as the investigation of quality care nursing though the lived experience of practising nurses. A competent recall of the search strategy and review process should be explained to demonstrate the likelihood of procuring applicable literature (Richardson-Tench et al., 2014). Unfortunately, this article has failed to do so
(except that the search spanned across various countries) and therefore the validity of

However, as mentioned, there is no indication of which sources of literature were used and therefore no evaluation of why this was done is mentioned. This is a weakness as, if there was secondary data utilised, there should be a discussion of why this was done and if potential limitations were considered (Greenhalgh, 2014). The literature states that there is insufficient improvements to the quality of nursing care, hypothesising that it could be due to the lack of research studying a lived experience. Knowing what quality means to individual nurses, this demonstrates a context for the research problem. The significance of individual perceptions of quality nursing care is demonstrated with links to statistical data on hospital mortality and morbidity and how the quality of nursing care could improve patient outcome and safety. The literature has not been critically appraised and there is no reflection on the cognitive processes and practical techniques or critical review sources used. The aim of the research is outlined as an attempt to understand the phenomenology of quality care nursing from the words of nurses. This demonstrates how the paper will conduct qualitative research in an attempt to further nursing knowledge on the lived experience
Young, W. B., Minnick, A. F., & Marcantonio, R. (1996). How wide is the gap in defining quality care?: Comparison of patient and nurse perceptions of important aspects of patient care. The Journal of Nursing Administration, 26(5), 15-20.
The government responded to the recommendations of the Francis Inquiry and voiced the recommendations for improving patient involvement in care, including changes to regulations and inspections (DOH, 2014). The NMC also responded to the Francis Inquiry in relation to the role of the nurse which was evaluated and criticised for ways in which it could be improved within the clinical setting, in order to improve nursing practice and knowledge towards patient-centred care. The NMC whole-heartedly agreed that there should be an increased focus in nurse training, education and professional development, in practical aspects in addition to theory (NMC, 2013).
Implications for nursing practice are as follows. First, the study indicated that additional medical intervention is not always supportive of positive patient outcomes. Instead, it
The purpose of this paper is to critique a qualitative research article in all phases of the report. For this purpose, the article that will be used is “Lamentation and loss: expression of caring by contemporary surgical nurses” written by Carol Enns and David Gregory. This paper will address the problem statement, literature review, conceptual underpinnings and research questions, research design/method, ethical considerations, sampling, data collection, data analysis, confirmability of the findings, interpretation and discussion of findings, additional considerations, and rating the scientific merit of a research report.
Patients often have complex care needs, and often present with multiple co-morbidities or problems. The process of conducting a comprehensive nursing assessment, and the coordination of care based on these findings is central to the role of the Registered Nurse (NMBA 2006). Evidence-based interventions must then be planned and implemented in a patient-centred approach in order to achieve agreed treatment goals and optimise health (Brown & Edwards 2012).
Going into details of the article, I realized that the necessary information needed to evaluate the experimental procedures were not included. However, when conducting an experiment, the independent and dependent variable are to be studied before giving a final conclusion.
Described below is a critical appraisal of a qualitative article by Lisa Booth using the frame-work suggested by Ryan, Coughlan and Cronin 2007 to establish its believability, robustness, credibility and integrity (Ryan, Coughlan & Cronin, 2007).
Everyone possess critical thinking skills but when it comes to criticize a journal article it can be difficult for the first time, one of the best ways to develop critical thinking and reading skills is to use some strategies when reading and evaluating a research study (Wood & Haber,1998). The following essay it is going to focus in a critique of a qualitative journal article by giving its strengths and weakness, critical appraisal it is going to be done with support from different references and frameworks relevant to a qualitative study.
In most aspects of life the saying “less is always more” may ring true; however when it comes to providing quality care to patients, less only creates problems which can lead to a decrease in patient’s quality of life as well as nurse’s satisfaction with their jobs. The massive shortage of nurses throughout the United States has gotten attention from some of the most prestigious schools, news media and political leaders. Nurses are being burnt out from their jobs, they are being overworked and overlooked. New nurses are not being properly trained, and old nurses are on their way to retirement. All the while the rate of patient admissions is on the rise. Nurses are reporting lower satisfaction in their job positions and hospital retention rates are at an all-time low, conversely this is affecting all patients’ quality of care. As stated in the article Addressing The Nurse Shortage To Improve The Quality Of Patient Care “According to an Institute of Medicine report, Nurses are the largest group of health care professionals providing direct patient care in hospitals, and the quality of care for hospital patients is strongly linked to the performance of nursing staff”.
...r investigation and then devise a plan for best possible action recognizing the rights of the patient and its benefits followed by the application of the chosen intervention with positive outcome in mind (Wells, 2007). Delivery of excellent and quality of care at constant level (NMC, 2008) must be marked in any responsibilities and duties of the care provider to promote exceptional nursing practice
Those that held a higher level of education were a less satisfied with care received than those with the least amount of education. The expectations that patients already had about how their healthcare was going to procede was a determining factor in their level of satisfaction and the level of involvement in their own care was also a factor. Patients’ who developed a trusting, honest and respectful relationship with their nurse reported a higher level of satisfaction and expressed receiving quality nursing care when the nurse took time to listen. The final indicators for quality care, was the competence and knowledge of the nursing staff and the organization of the facility in regards to continuity of care. Patients expressed greater satisfaction when the staff worked together to care for them and the staff appeared skillful and knowlegable in their
Nursing for me is not only a profession, but rather a form of promoting physical and emotional well-being for my patients. At the same time, I consider that the nurse must have the quality to be caring. The patient needs to know that his/her nurse is there to comfort physically and emotionally during hard situations. In addition, nursing it is more than just performing procedures and administering medications. An important characteristic that will help in many aspects to alleviate suffering of my patients is compassion. By showing compassion, the recovery of my patients will have a better outcome. Also, another important aspect of my nursing definition is the presence of knowledge. As nurses, we have to identify and face different situations in the clinical practice if nurses lack the adequate knowledge the patient health outcomes can be jeopardized.
The standards of practice describe a competent level of nursing care as exhibited by the critical thinking model known as the nursing process. This practice includes the areas of assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The nursing process includes significant actions taken by registered nurses (RN) and forms the foundation of the nurse’s decision-making (“American Nurses Association,” 2010).

The effects of having a deficient nursing staff are explored in this paper. By reducing the number of nurses in a healthcare facility the quality of care is no longer at its peak. If healthcare facilities were to hire an adequate number of nurses the quality of care would return to its peak. However, as the number of nurses continues to deteriorate current health care team nurses are forced to work with a soaring nurse-to-patient ratio. As the quality of care diminishes hospital stay is extended, which increases the cost of care for the hospital and patient. The severity of the issues that an inadequate nursing staff have are substantial and need to be resolved. This paper examines the abounding effects associated with inadequate
