Analysis of The Apology

The chosen passage about Socrates denying his place in corrupting the youth from The Apology is important to the overall understanding of The Apology and the trial, because Socrates trial was brought on over this claim and if Socrates did not corrupt the youth, or did so unwillingly, then he is innocent and should not be put on trial for such actions. This passage helps in the overall understanding of why Socrates trial was brought on, and explains how he is innocent in this accusation.

This argument Socrates made about how he is innocent from corrupting the young is the start to his whole defense and the rest of the arguments made throughout his Trial. It is him flat out saying it was either not done, or if it was done, it was unwillingly, and therefore he is not guilty either way. This statement by itself makes up what The Apology is about. Without this argument, he would have no defense against what he is being accused of. One of the themes in this dialogue is Socratic irony. When at Delphi, the shrine of Apollo, Socrates was told that there was no man wiser than him is an example of the dialogues Socratic irony. Socrates couldn’t understand how he was the wisest man. He brings this up at the trial to make a point. Socrates confesses that he is not wise, and that he is actually ignorant. With Socrates pointing this out to the jury, he is making the point that he is ignorant, and therefore, unbeknownst to him, can teach impious things to his young …show more content…

Just as Socrates was unknowingly affecting lives, Forrest Gump also unknowingly affected people’s lives in a major way throughout the movie, all unbeknownst to him. Socrates affected the people of Athens, and was accused of affecting the young in a negative way. Forrest Gump affected Lieutenant Dan’s life, at the time in a negative way when Forrest saved his life. Forrest saving his life ultimately caused Lieutenant Dan to lose his legs, and have to live his life in a wheel chair. These two are similar in that they are affecting people’s lives in a negative way,
