In every tragedy, there is always a main character that makes a fatal mistake and ends up having the most devastating downfall ever. Greek tragedies are one specifically with the theme of pride, loss, and the exploit of power. The play written by Sophocles, Antigone, is a prime example of a Greek tragedy. Sophocles’ writing style was defined by dramatic irony, showing how the audience acknowledges the irony in said play while the characters in the play do not. Many Greek tragedies have multiple characters that can be portrayed as the tragic hero. In Antigone, Creon is the tragic hero as evidenced by his tragic flaw, realization, and catharsis. The gods took revenge on Creon till he became nothing, causing the feeling of pity the readers would feel for Creon. Thus, he is the tragic hero in Antigone. Briefly, Creon is the tragic hero of Antigone. The tragic flaw that Creon had shown to the audience was that he was too arrogant to view or even put a thought towards how others as a community felt about his actions. Creon’s realization was when his wife and son killed themselves and he had nothing left and could not do anything to bring that joy back. Creon had finally known that he had been wrong about everything, and he realized that he was the true problem.
