Alone. That’s how she felt. Secluded to her small cave and heavy darkness. The light of day shone through an opening just wide enough to fit her head through. The hole gaped on the side of the cave, allowing in the most light when the mid-morning sun shone its brightest. She thought it was beautiful, the sun. It lit up the sky with fire, accenting the earth’s beauty in various shades of the rainbow. Once, the mermaid attempted to look upon the sun hoping for a glimpse further into its attractive face, but was instead gifted with the burning of her irises. The sun is a dangerous beauty. Stretching her arms above her head, the mermaid shook out her tail, scales shimmering beneath the surface of the pool. She looked around once more, out of habit rather than hope, but found nothing except for a few piles of rock and a curtain of foliage. Her eyes picked out the slight variations in color from rocks to seaweed allowing her to traverse through the pool without difficulty. Reaching out she grabbed at a chest. It was deteriorated from the water and was falling apart. Opening the latch, the mermaid gazed inside, green orbs searching. Finally, an amulet, pearl blue and milky white, caught her attention. With careful hands, the mermaid picked up the amulet and swam to the surface in order to examine it in the light of her hole. A gold chain, dulled from the waters, looped around a pendant which was decorated with intricate designs, surely carved by steady and patient hands. The jewel itself held an iridescent glow as the light shifted upon its surface. The amulet is beautiful, or, at least, it had been. Time had scraped against the metal and jewel, scratching some of the brightness off in the process. Even so, the amulet remained the mermaid’s most beloved
