May Belle was picky and kept asking Edmunds if certain parts of the food were safe to eat. The waitress from before walked over to their table and asked if they were finished with their meal. Mrs. Edmunds said yes and asked for the check. The waitress came back and gave each of them a fortune cookie. Janice immediately said that she didn’t like fortune cookies and handed it to May Belle. Jesse and Leslie opened theirs together. May Belle cracked open both of her cookies. Mrs. Edmunds squeezed the plastic wrapper and made a big popping sound and giggled, then she opened her cookie. May Belle read Janice’s out loud because she felt bad for taking her cookie. “Be nice to the people around you, you never know what they’re dealing with” she then read out the lucky numbers. Jesse and Leslie read theirs quietly. Jessie’s read “You never know what you have until you’ve lost it”. Leslie’s read “Take care of yourself, people love you”. She took it as a threat. May Belle whispered her’s to herself “You can always count on your family to love you”. Mrs. Edmunds didn’t want to read hers but Jesse insisted, so she read “You’re doing amazing sweetie” she grabbed another from the waitress as they were
The story follows three girls- Jeanette, the oldest in the pack, Claudette, the narrator and middle child, and the youngest, Mirabella- as they go through the various stages of becoming civilized people. Each girl is an example of the different reactions to being placed in an unfamiliar environment and retrained. Jeanette adapts quickly, becoming the first in the pack to assimilate to the new way of life. She accepts her education and rejects her previous life with few relapses. Claudette understands the education being presented to her but resists adapting fully, her hatred turning into apathy as she quietly accepts her fate. Mirabella either does not comprehend her education, or fully ignores it, as she continually breaks the rules and boundaries set around her, eventually resulting in her removal from the school.
Gene jumped into the river even though he’s scared because of Finny’s persistence. After the two boys jumped, the other three refuses to do the jumping, so they headed back for dinner. Into their way back, the 2 best friends wrestle with one another and missed dinner. Consequently, they went straight to their rooms. Mr. Prud’homme, a substitute teacher for the summer session, went to Gene and Finny to discipline them the next morning for missing dinner, but he was soon won over by Finny’s ebullient talkativeness and leaves without giving punishment.
Then she saw a greasy china plate that had bread crumbs, cheese and sausage. The pungent of cheese made her stomach grumble. The man was very rude and insulted her because she couldn’t read. Then Frances headed home and on her way, she bumped into a girl with a nice, green, winter coat. She imagined her Ma in that coat, twirling around with a smile on her face. The girl’s mother said a rather offensive sentence about Frances and walked away with her daughter.
Rena Cohen had returned from camp high-spirited, anticipating her long-awaited senior year of high school. With only two days left to catch up with her friends, Rena called Malka Koenig and Lizzy Zimmerman and set up to see them at Cafe Bonjour. She couldn’t wait to hear how Malka enjoyed her lessons in computer programming and how Lizzy enjoyed her stay in camp. At the cafe, Rena realized something was wrong. Lizzy and Malka looked uncomfortable around each other and after just a few minutes, Malka got up and walked out. Lizzy refused to tell Rena what was wrong, so Rena got up and left too. When school began, things only got worse. Malka insisted that Rena was her best friend, Lizzy insisted that Rena was her best friend, and Rena wasn’t so sure she was friends with either of them. One thing was for certain: they were no longer the inseparable threesome everyone envied. As her year progressed, Rena grew more and more distant from her once undisputed friends. Their silence baffled her and she felt lost in the crowd; by twelfth even the loners had found their place in the grade. Malka became close friends with Tzipporah since they were both G.O. heads. Lizzy became friends with a girl named Riva. One day Malka approached Rena and told her she wanted to tell ...

These three girls were wearing bathing suites that caught the attention of everyone in the store. In this small town such apparel is unacceptable to the residents. Sammy observes their bathing suites, their hair, and their bodies as they walk through the store. He becomes lustful of the leader of the girls and gives her the nickname “Queenie”. Sammy goes into detail feeling faint describing her breast like two smooth scoops of vanilla. The girls flow through the store going against the normal traffic to get a jar of herring snacks. Queenie leading the way arrives at Sammy’s register to check
...ce near Mean Lady Ming’s where we bought shrimp lo mein. I grabbed Vonetta and Fern and we all ran off. Five minutes later of running we were at Cecile’s house. At the doorstep, I heard crying. This crying sounded like Cecile. Could she have really changed? We opened the door and ran in and hugged her. Surprisingly the door was opened. She must have went searching for us because there were two distinct footprints on her welcome mat before we entered the house and before we stepped on the mat. She really has changed. “You all better hug tight Vonetta and Fern.” I said with tears of joy. “My babies, my babies! I will never treat you that bad ever again. I am so sorry!” cried Cecile. “ From now on I will care for you and be a good mother. I am sorry for however I treated you.” cried Cecile. For the first time in forever, my sisters and I actually had someone to call Ma.

We were now at the bus stop. The sun had replenished and the sky full of glee. There was trail next to the bus stop, she started walking through it. The trees intertwined like arches and the shadows created an ominous feeling. As she walked through the forest, her whole body had a calm aura.
All the characters (4-Mrs.Etterick/Rudge/Cox/Gina) are telling stories but the important thing is that they don't listen to each other, they constantly interrupt each other; they 're very selfish in a certain way but they apparently work in the same company/building: Cox says that 'When I didn't see you in your office (p.111) ...' And Rudge said that is was 'a party with all the secretaries'. Another similarity is that they sill don't know what they're going to do with Christmas (where/with who?). Mrs. Diana Etterick: She has a daughter, Gina who is nearly thirty but she's retarded. She lost her husband Richard (who works at the university) in Thailand (while they were living there) to a twenty-one year old Chinese girl, who was determined to leave China. They're both now in Australia while she's alone (except for now). She's very cynic avout that - p.112 Rudge asks 'Was it a tropical disease?' 'Yes', replies Diana 'she was about 21...' She hates Christmas: she didn't went to the party at work and on p.112 she says 'In Bangkok, you never know it was Christmas' and 'I'd like to spend the next eight days in bed, watching rubbish television.
They loved the dolls. They have a huge collection of dolls. Kind of weird, but you know. And so they had dolls displayed in cases and dolls sitting out. One night, the parents go out to a dinner party, and this girl comes to baby-sit the children.

The children played tag and ran across the building to find out the manager was looking at them suspiciously. The parents yelled, “Hey, get back in YOUR SEATS!,” startling the 2 boys they wandered back. The food has arrived and they quickly grabbed the fork and chomped on the food as fast as they can, so the boys could get to the fortune cookies. At the end of the lunch the waiter gave the parents the bill and some fortune cookies as a little desert or a thanks for coming gift. Kyle opened the cookie, looked at it, and graciously wondered to himself.
