For an effective relationship humans need to understand that every individual is different in the way of perceiving the world. In everyday existential activity, the human being has a vast variety of people, situations, and health problems to confront. So knowing this may create a better understanding, paving the way for better communication with others. Creating effective communication helps create a better relation of empathy and communication between counselor and client.
The main objective of the counselor is to stimulate growth and development of the client promoting interest and welfare in order to promote the formation of healthy relationships. The role of counselors is to try to create a relationship of empathy with the client. More

than any component, empathy has been empirically shown to be related to positive client outcomes and were probably the most-important ingredient to building a successful working Alliance (Bohart, Elliot, Greenberg, & Watson, 2002; Norcross, 2010). Empathy can be manifested through the understanding, speech, hearing, or just catching a lot of attention to the nuances of feeling that leaves the person that was meant for him or her, not for the counselor.
Empathy defined, understands the client's experience. Emotionally resonate with client's experience "as if" it were your own (Rogers, 1957 & Bohart, 1997). When working with a client from a different culture, their attitudes towards family or sexual preference may be different from the counselor but they must be open to work with different scenarios. There are two accurate empathy stages in counseling; primary and advanced. Primary- accurately articulates back the feelings and experiences from overt client statements and behaviors. Advanced- accurately articulate back implied feelings and experiences from client statements (Gladding, …show more content…
1996). Understanding the cultural backgrounds of clients is essential for a good relationship between counselor and client. It is important that the counselor as a professional explores their own values, beliefs and cultural identity and how this can influence in the counseling process. It should be noted that, unlike a friendship, the relationship between counselor and client is completely asymmetric (focus on the needs of the patient), not altruistic (therapist is paid for his work and, therefore, the client does not have to feel indebted to him) and subject to a set of formal rules (frequency and duration of sessions, rather than the same, timeliness, fees, limited duration of therapy, active collaboration of the client). The main role of a mental health counselor is to help and work with individuals, families and groups on issues that affect their psychological state and general well-being; nonjudgmental and encouraging them to explore their inner world.
The counselor evaluates their clients through interviews, observations, listening, non-verbal skills, and psychological test; with the goal is to increase self-awareness and help the client to find their own strategies and skills to deal with their problems. The most important for the counselor is facilitate change in the client’s life where they can learn to express their felling and thought; also learn to identify the factors and stimuli that have a significant role in different areas of their life and problems later. Mental health counselors are trained to work with a variety of topics that can be used in, schools, health centers and community-based groups. Besides considering the accumulation of stressors and resources, Boss (1987, 1988, 2002), and (Collins & Collins, 2005) have suggested that stress and crisis affected by contextual
factors. Ecological and Contextual Considerations In addition to considering the accumulation of stressors and resources, Boss (1987, 1988, 2002) and others (Collins & Collins, 2005) have suggested that stress and crisis are affected by contextual factors. Collins and Collins, (2005) have advocated a “developmental ecological” perspective to conceptualizing crises. According to these authors, some crises are triggered by stressor events that are developmental in nature; that is, these developmental crises are expected events in the life span of the individual or family. However, regardless of whether the stressor event is developmental or situational, life span variables must be considered to determine their meaning and impact on the stress or crisis situation. In addition to considering developmental factors, Collins and Collins have maintained that the context provided by environmental factors such as interpersonal relationships, community resources, and society at large must be recognized. Definitely to be a good professional continuous effort is required over his/her career. A professional counselor for mental health stays constantly updating their practice to improve professional quality services to their clients. In continuing effort counselors, attend conferences, seminars, keep communication with colleagues, and do research investigation, read journals and more. All this is part of their ethical responsibility and commitment to their profession and therefore the client and the institution operates.
...ives from the implementation of an empathic, hopeful continuous treatment relationship, which provides integrated treatment and coordination of care through the course of multiple treatment episodes” (Watkins, 2015). Whether, confronted with a substance use disorder, gambling or sex addiction the way in which a counselor work with the client in an open helpful manner is the key to motivating the client to change their behaviors. “A man convinced against his will, Is of the same opinion still” (Carnegie, 1981). The most piece of the helping relationship is that the client is the lead in their care, as they are the ones that will be making the decisions for their care. A counselor is essentially a trained skillful teacher that guides an individual toward their best recovery options and it is up to the individual to make the needed changes in their life and behaviors.
There are multiple structures of that can be applied to the counselling process, ranging from the basic idea of a beginning, middle and end to a more structured approach as that proposed by Egan (1994). Although his initial structure offered three main components; Stage 1, exploring the situation, stage 2, identifying a new or desired scenario to strive for and stage 3, the action stage, in which methods of coping are devised of and implemented. Egan later devised a ten stage structure that still takes into account initial stages from the speakers perspective of identifying a problem and seeking help, within this structure stage 4 is the initial meeting of the counsellor and client and can be considered the beginning stage of the helping re...
Counseling skills has provided me with a valuable insight into the helping relationship and how it is both created and maintained in order to encourage growth and development in the client. The factors involved within the helping relationship include considering Roger’s core conditions, congruence, unconditional positive regard and empathy as the three main characteristics necessary in a helping relationship. In order to fully incorporate all three of Roger’s core conditions, I as the counselor must be self-aware, as a lack of self-awareness may inhibit truly listening and understanding the client; self-awareness can be enhanced through exercises such as Johari’s window. Counseling skills such as body language and active listening also plays a role within encouraging the client to open up and can help me as the counselor convey empathy.
The counselor accomplishes the above by expressing empathy, developing discrepancies, going along with resistance and supporting self-efficacy. Moreover, the counselor guides the client toward a solution that will lead to permanent posi...
For clients who express their experiences for the first time in counseling, it can be a powerful force to help them heal. It is important for the counselor to pay close attention to the person’s body language, affect and tone. The counselor must consider the possible scenarios that may occur in the first session. Cultural aspects of the client must be considered. From the client’s perspective, the first session is an important session, even if the first session is mostly an information gathering session. The client may have experiences much trauma in their life, never being able to trust a person with their closest feelings. This is why it is very important to establish rapport and trust in...
This paper will discuss the following 4 Core Functions of a Counselor: Case Management, Client Education, Crisis Intervention, Referral and their primary purposes.
Communication of empathy is widely considered to play an important role in developing and maintaining a successful therapeutic relationship between psychologist and client. The term empathy refers to the ability to understand another person’s thoughts and feelings, and to see a situation from that person’s point of view, without judgement (Hazelwood & Shakespeare-Finch, 2011). A therapist’s empathy can be communicated to a client through a variety of different verbal and nonverbal responses. For example, Dowell and Berman (2013) found evidence that high levels of eye contact combined with a forward leaning posture made a significant contribution to clients’ perception of their therapists’ feelings of empathy towards them. An example of the use of eye contact to show empathy can be seen throughout the included video. Moyers and Miller (2013) considered reflecting meaning (also referred to as paraphrasing) to be another method of conveying empathy and understanding to a clien...
Badly written notes can cause many issues in a medical office. Patients may think that we don't not care about them and that can leave them also thinking that we are unprofessional.
In successful communication building rapport is one of the core second person skills. Rapport building is the establishment of a harmonic, comfortable work relationship between the counsellor and the client (Ramseyer & Tschacher, 2011). Rapport is the essential skill for a counsellor to build trust with the client. Hunt and Price (2002) suggest rapport should be additionally based on sincerity and respect and is never ending as it is a building stone to a productive long-term bond. Sharpley, Jeffrey and McMah (2006) state effective rapport building can be display through the counsellor’s interest and engagement with the client, but also the client’s involvement in the session and his or her enjoyment of sharing the experience and...
It helps the counselor to establish a plan for its client and comprehend what the client has been through. The idea of
The client should be honest with the counselor, discuss concerns, and listen to the counselor. I would expect students to trust in their abilities to make their own choices get in touch with their feelings. I believe client roles are resourceful in helping people take more responsibility for their lives and solve their own problems. I believe the client is fully capable of fulfilling their own potential for growth.
A counselor is defined as a person trained to give guidance on personal, social, or psychological problems. Professional counselors help to identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional or social interruptions. Counseling also improves communication, strengthens self-esteem, and promotes behavior change in relations to mental health. Counseling enables us to appreciate how we are in healthy relationships and safe environments due to some of the bad things others experience. Counseling helps clients understand and clarify their views on life and learn to reach their goals through making wise choices. In most counseling situations, the client is experiencing personal issues such as low self-esteem,
Within the individual psychology relationship the counselor has several roles that they hold. The counselor establishes an egalitarian relationship, working as teachers in their relationships. They model, teach, and assess areas of the client’s life such as how Ana grew up the middle child and her ways of responding and functioning. The counselor’s role is also to direct and encourage Ana, being warm and human, and admitting their own mistakes when necessary (Gladding, 2005; Murdock, 2013).
There are few circumstances counselors have to oblige when dealing issues from clients. Counselors have to be trustworthy; this is a fundamental to understanding and solving issues. Counselors have to keep information gathered confidential and restrict any disclosure of information to anybody. Clients voluntarily seek help to counselors for therapy or any kind of help they need. Hence as a counselor it is important to respect their clients’ self-government and ensure precision in information given. Commitment of a counselor plays a big role in a therapy. It is not ethical for a counselor to neglect a client such that the client’s well being is not taken care of. It is also important for counselors to have a fair treatment with all their clients. No matter how each client will be, there must not be any form of judgment, which will cause any form of unfair
Counselling is the use of skills and training to create a relationship with ones client in order to allow for the client to form insight into their lives, accepting their feelings as their own and allowing for growth to occur. It is the aim of the helper to create a state in which the client can perform more contently and with their own self.
