As defined by Personnel Today, workplace counselling is an employee support intervention that is usually short term in nature and provides an independent, specialist resource for people working across all sectors and in all working environments. Hence, workplace counselling is needed to increase effective work performance and productivity which is the production of valid results in a work organization. This is because when employees job performance is declining, organizational productivity is often seriously affected. Counselling would help an employee know what they did wrong, what the correct procedure is, and make sure that they understand what is expected. This allows the employee to be given a chance as it is unfair to write up employees for committing errors if they are unaware of what is expected. The counselling session allows an employee to help himself better, understand situations and look at them with a new perspective, have better decision making, have alternate solutions to problems as well as cope with the situation and stress. But if they continue to make similar errors, they might need more formalized training or if mistakes are serious, they can be informed that subsequent violations may lead to formal documentation. This is so that these employees will be developed, and not torn down or punished without due process. Workplace counselling in this manner aims to resolve negative behaviors in a diplomatic yet effective way, minimizing stress for everyone involved.
