Did you know that in the Civil War, more than 600,000 died due to disease and combat? The American Civil War, the bloodiest war in the history of our nation, was caused by slowly building tensions and differences between the North and South, particularly the issue of slavery. The war also happened because of the growing violence between the people who owned slaves and those who didn’t, which eventually led to Bleeding Kansas and John Brown’s failed rebellion. The Civil War could have been avoided because of the Compromises, the Dred Scott decision, and Bleeding Kansas. First, the Civil War could have been avoided because of the compromises. To start, the Missouri Compromise, the first one, allowed 30 years for other issues to be solved, but …show more content…
If these compromises had not been put in place and a bigger compromise aimed at completely ending the issue had been put in place, the Civil War most likely would not have happened because it could satisfy both sides’ demands. To end, if the compromises had not been passed and a bigger compromise satisfying both sides had been passed instead, the Civil War would not have happened. Next, the Civil War could have been avoided because of the Dred Scott decision. This case, initiated by slave Dred Scott, was based on the fact that he believed he could be free, as he was living in free territory. The court ruled, however, that he was not free, and African-Americans, slave or not, couldn’t be citizens of the US. The court also ruled that Congress couldn’t decide slavery’s legality in the territories, which opened all of them up to slavery. If this case had never been launched in the first place, tensions between the North and South would not have reached an all-time …show more content…
Bleeding Kansas was an act of violence initiated in Kansas after the Kansas-Nebraska Act, in which popular sovereignty was decided as the solution to slavery in the Louisiana Territory, which was split into Kansas and Nebraska. Northerners hated this, as it repealed the Missouri Compromise and allowed slavery in a much larger area, which scared them. Because of this, many groups went to Kansas to sway the vote in their sides’ favor, and during this time, many of the groups decided to fight each other over their competing differences. If Bleeding Kansas and the Kansas-Nebraska Act had never happened, the Civil War might have been avoided because by then the tensions were too high and anyone coming into office would’ve been seen badly in the South. This is because after this, Lincoln won his presidency, and the South was outraged, with many states deciding to leave due to the fear of their citizens losing their daily well-being, like slavery. In conclusion, the Civil War could have been avoided if the Kansas-Nebraska Act and Bleeding Kansas had never happened. The Civil War could have been avoided because of the Compromises, the Dred Scott decision, and Bleeding
On April 12, 1861, Abraham Lincoln declared to the South that, the only reason that separate the country is the idea of slavery, if people could solve that problem then there will be no war. Was that the main reason that started the Civil war? or it was just a small goal that hides the real big reason to start the war behind it. Yet, until this day, people are still debating whether slavery is the main reason of the Civil war. However, there are a lot of facts that help to state the fact that slavery was the main reason of the war. These evidences can relate to many things in history, but they all connect to the idea of slavery.
In the spring 1861, years of building tensions between the northern states and southern states resulted in the American Civil War. In 1680 an anti-slavery Republican, Abraham Lincoln was elected president causing seven southern states to secede from the union. These seven states included--Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas--. These seven states formed the Confederate States of America. The American Civil War lasted from April 12, 1861 to May 9, 1865 and claimed more than roughly 620,000 lives. So what caused the Civil War? The three main causes of the Civil War were differences between the north and the south in economies, disagreements in abolishing slavery, and whether the State or Federal
The existence of slavery was the central element of the conflict of the north and south. Other problems existed that led to this succession but none were as big as the slavery issue. The only way to avoid the war was to abolish slavery, but this was not able to be done because slavery is what kept the south running. When the south seceded it was said by Abraham Lincoln that “ a house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free.” Because slavery formed two opposing societies and slavery could never be abolished, the civil war was inevitable. These were all the reasons why the south seceded from the union, this succession was eminent and there was no plausible way to avoid it.
Could the Civil war be avoided? The civil war was a war that split the United States into two sides. There was the north who opposed slavery and the south who wanted slavery. During this time president Abraham Lincoln was elected into the white house. When the civil war ended there was a total of 60,000+ people dead! Could the civil war be avoided? The civil war could have been avoided for three reasons, There were compromises, the number of slaves were going down and there were other countries who abolished slavery without going into a civil war.
The Civil War was a war fought between the the North and South in 1861. The Civil War happen because of hard tensions between the North and South over whether or not slavery rights follows with them in the new states in the westward expansion. The presidential election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 caused seven Southern states to secede from the Union and form the Confederate States of America, four more states later on joined them. The Civil War had many battles and the South had to go against the North and Confederate States which also made it hard for them. The Civil War ended in the
The explosion of the American Civil War was caused by a vast number of conflicting principles and prejudices, fueled by sectional differences, and set afire by a very unfortunate set of political events. Undoubtedly, the central theme of almost all of the events that led up to the Civil War was one way or another, related to the dispute of slavery. Throughout the nineteenth century, slavery-related tensions brewed to such an extent, that politicians often took accustom to avoiding the hot topic altogether, because they were too scared of either starting a big political feud, or losing votes from one side of the issue or the other. More specifically, three events that were most instrumental in bringing about the Civil War were the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 and the Presidential election of 1860. Because of such strong reactions to these events, the Civil War was practically unstoppable, however if the parties wanted to avoid a war altogether, they could have advocated more compromise and popular sovereignty.
Bleeding Kansas The Compromise of 1850 brought relative calm to the nation. Though most blacks and abolitionists strongly opposed the Compromise, the majority of Americans embraced it, believing that it offered a final, workable solution to the slavery question. Most importantly, it saved the Union from the terrible split that many had feared. People were all too ready to leave the slavery controversy behind and move on.
Although some people believe that the Missouri Compromise delayed the Civil War, it actually is one of the main causes of the war. This is due to the fact that the Missouri Compromise did not solve the issue of slavery in any way, but merely delayed actually taking care of it. Instead of actually trying to come up with a real solution to the fact that the North and South had such different principles and morals regarding slavery, the compromise just attempted to ignore what the real problems were. Then, the compromise was repealed by the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 because Kansas and Nebraska decided whether or not to allow slavery by a vote of popular sovereignty, which made the Missouri Compromise void (Researchers). The Kansas-Nebraska Act was the final straw in dividing the country, and causing turmoil over the issue of slavery. If the federal government had
For generations students have been taught an over-simplified version of the civil war and even now I am just coming to a full understanding of the truth. The civil war was a terrible rift in our nation, fought between the northern states (known as the union) and the southern states (the Confederate States of America). The people’s opinions were so divided over the issues of the civil war that, in some families, brother was pit against brother. Eventually, the south succumbed to the north and surrendered on April 9th, 1865 but not before the war had caused 618,000 deaths, more than any other war in U.S. history.(1) In truth, many believe this horrible war was fought purely over the issue of slavery. Nothing could be further from the truth. I am not denying that slavery was a major cause and issue of the civil war, but social and economic differences as well as states’ rights were just as important issues and I will be discussing all three.
...om’s Cabin in 1852, the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, the Dred Scott Decision of 1857, John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry in 1859, and the outcome of the Presidential Election of 1860—created conditions where Southerners felt the need to secede from the United States (they felt that their “way of life” was being threatened), as well as created conditions where the Northerners decided to go to war against the Southern Confederacy in order to maintain the Union. It is not surprising, however, that the Civil War occurred; since the Industrial Revolution, the Industrial North had always been different than the Agricultural South. If each region paid more attention to resolving the issues that separated them, instead of trying to prove themselves right, they could have stopped the bloodiest battle in American history (even though this is using hindsight knowledge).
In conclusions, the Civil War was an inevitable conflict because of slavery. All aspects mention requires slavery for there to be a conflict. In addition, all states that seceded from the Union indicated that slavery was their main issue. Unless the North continued to allow slavery in the South and the expanding western territories, the conflict was sure to occur. Moreover, once the idea of money became an issue for slave owners, there was no doubt a war would ensue. Each compromise initiated by the federal government fell short of pleasing either party and violence occurred in Kansas. Slavery is the core of the inevitable Civil War and it took war to abolish it.
Between the period of 1820-1861 there was a number of political compromises done in order reduce the sectional tension between the North and the South. While each of the compromises created helped the issue that the country was facing at that time, they did not help overall. The compromises were only a temporary fix to the country’s problem of sectionalism. Therefore, while political compromises were effective in reducing the tension between the North and the South, it did not help in preventing the civil war. The North and the South had a vast amount of political differences, one of the major ones was slavery.
The American Civil War, also known as the War Between the States, or simply the Civil War in the United States, was a civil war fought from 1861 to 1865, after seven Southern slave states declared their secession and formed the Confederate States of America . The states that remained in the Union were known as the "Union" or the "North". The war had its origin in the fractious issue of slavery, especially the extension of slavery into the western territories. Foreign powers did not intervene. After four years of bloody combat that left over 600,000 soldiers dead and destroyed much of the South's infrastructure, the Confederacy collapsed, slavery was abolished, and the difficult Reconstruction process of restoring national unity and guaranteeing rights to the freed slaves began.
After thoroughly assessing past readings and additional research on the Civil War between the North and South, it was quite apparent that the war was inevitable. Opposed views on this would have probably argued that slavery was the only reason for the Civil War. Therefore suggesting it could have been avoided if a resolution was reached on the issue of slavery. Although there is accuracy in stating slavery led to the war, it wasn’t the only factor. Along with slavery, political issues with territorial expansion, there were also economic and social differences between North and South. These differences, being more than just one or two, gradually led to a war that was bound to happened one way or another.
Today we classify people into groups based on their shared socio economic conditions, or interpersonal set of inequalities. When people are classified into these groups, greater status, power or certain privileges are granted to some and not to others. This is known as social stratification. This concept illustrates the advantages and disadvantages that one will acquire; depending on how qualified an individual is, in order to meet the needs of society. Although, Davis and Moore’s theory demonstrates how social stratification and inequality are positively functional and therefore necessary, it is relevantly important because it encourages people to take on the more complicated and important tasks, when basic rewards are given to the most skillful and qualified individuals.
