Art Critique Andy "Cosmo-Joe" creates his work out of thin air. His spray paint art utilizes many elements of art; such as, lines, shapes, space and value. He based his art piece off of Michigan's mitten shape, with many rounded forms as seen in the river and space. Among the planets in space the shapes and use of lines give us a sense of chaos. Inside the mitten there is earth toned colors, with a relaxing nature scene. The sun is immense, shining over the land. Andy's piece is an example of the technique, Magical Realism, naturalistic techniques that also have elements of fantasy. He uses a variety of color, value, and shape to make us feel as if we are in space looking at earth. The dominant figure of the outline of Michigan allows us
to keep rotating throughout the painting. In the background, lies the planets and shooting starts, these figures range in size giving the viewer a sense of increased distance between them and the painting. The spray paint art makes me think of life and how sometimes it is not going the way we would like. Within the painting we have space which is dark and has a lot going on, similar to life. Then, we have the mitten shape, which gives us a sense of relief. We get lost focusing on the big things, which sometimes we just need to focus on the small. It was once stated "Be open to what may at first seem unfamiliar, even crazy. Above all, do not expect a neatly packaged definition of art that can apply to every work by every artist" (Janaro and Altshuler 92). Andy's spray paint art is very unique; all of the pieces are different. His pieces are quality pieces of art, they inhabit many shapes, color that complement one another, movement, and appealing proportions of the figures. I looked at many pieces of art during ArtPrize, but I never stopped and looked for a while at the others. The spray paint art is more of a low art, the meaning behind it may be a little more difficult to come by, but it is thought-provoking. He has been a successful artist, although he has never won ArtPrize, he has toured across the United States. The New York Times has even described his work as "mesmerizing."
‘Corrinne Terrace’ by Ian Strange was created in 2011. Strange is an Australian, New York based artist whose work relates to the themes of identity and home. The ‘Suburban’ collection features a series of eight abandoned suburban houses which have been transformed by spray painting specific shapes and patterns over particular sections of the houses. Some houses have been repainted using a single colour, and in one case, set on fire. The image depicts a house which has been painted black with the exception of a white circle which has been left from when the house was previously painted.
Surprisingly, fifty years later, artist John Sloan happen to meet all the qualifications Baudelaire has designed for Monsieur G— making urban life observations and drawing from memory. Sloan adopts and employs Baudelaire’s idea of urban watching and further expands it for an American audience. Born and raised in Philadelphia, John Sloan first begun his art career as a newspaper illustrator. After years of working, he developed his own artistic style and started making paintings and etchings. When he moved from Philadelphia to New York, he has found that city life scenes of great interest that he then started observing and making etchings for scenes of modern life. He was well-known and celebrated as the founder of the Ashcan School and was most celebrated for this urban genre scenes. (Lobel, Chapter1)
My second gallery review is on the work of Philip Denker. I analyzed the art work at his exhibit; OVER + UNDER”. I saw his exhibit Friday November 15, 2013 at 11:00 am at Trifecta gallery inside the arts factory. When I walked into the room I loved that the room was illuminated with the light of the light bulbs, as well, with the natural illumination of the sun coming through the glass windows and door. When I got inside the room I also noticed it was spacious, and the pieces were very well ordered. The pieces were hung vertically or horizontally, and I liked this because it got my attention.
Capitalism has widely been regarded as one of the most advanced intellectual achievements of the past few centuries. However, a system which is largely credited for alleviating “human misery” is actually perpetuating it (Goldberg, 6). Capitalism inherently fuels inequality leading to poverty among the powerless. Jonah Goldberg in his article, Capitalism Has Lifted Billions Out of Poverty, attributed the economic theory to ending poverty, but failed to recognize that capitalism’s lofty goals are merely fulfilled on paper. Equal opportunity must exist for capitalism to end human misery, however the stratification of society ensures that no individual has equal access to the keys of capitalist success.
The representation of the new age of exploration, which serves as an allusion to man’s potential, is starkly contrasted with the depiction of Icarus that serves as an allegory for man’s limits, indicating the shift from a euro-centric universe. This painting is an oil canvas landscape of the sun setting on the horizon of the ocean sea, while the ships were sailing through the body of water. The focus on humanism during this period is clearly portrayed by the presence of the plowman, shepherd, and fisherman performing their daily task. Lighter colors are used, which differ from the darker colors that were emphasized during the Dark Age or Medieval period. Shadows can be seen on the ground next to the plowman, showing the increasing artistic methods that begin to be utilized.
painting, and I react as such. There is a clear blue middle that he seems to draw attention to.
The colours used in the artwork are earthy tones with various browns, greens, yellows, blues and some violet. These colours create a sense of harmony on the...
2. Tomasso Portinari wanted this piece to be displayed in his family's chapel in Florence and was intended to be a representation of the writing of the birth of Jesus by St. Bridget (Stokstad, 2011). Portinari and his family are represented in the piece. Located on the side panels of the piece Portinari, his wife, and children can be seen kneeling beneath the depiction of Patron Saints. They are represented much smaller than the Saints, Mary and Joseph, and the shepherds. The family is instead similar to the size of the Angels. The artist, Hugo van der Goes, I feel is also represented in this painting through his style. Besides the subtle symbolic parts of the painting, like the flowers or jar decorated with grapes used to represent the blood of Christ, royalty, and purity, van der Goes painted the shepherds in an uncommon way for the period. This style may have been
Surrounded by paintings. Surrounded by color. My eyes traveled from painting to painting, taking me to new places. Finally, I landed at home. Titanium white spread on with a palette knife, with burst of colors painted with a dry brush. I was drawn to Autumn Lilies like a magnet to metal. I saw myself taking the brush from Mary G. L. Hood. I saw myself painting this painting.
Art is an incredible instrument used to display emotion, connection, depth, and more. Vincent Van Gogh once said, “I dream my painting and I paint my dream” (Van Gogh). When visiting Tullahoma Fine Arts Center, I observed and surveyed many different works of art. I was attracted to a few, but the one I enjoyed most is called, “Apple Truck”, painted by Dennis Albtski. The painting is a rather simple painting, with an old and worn truck sitting in the snow on a cold dreary afternoon. The sky is filled with dark and heavy clouds, creating a gloomy sentiment. The overall disposition of the painting is quiet and peaceful, almost as if the apple truck has completed its task and the work is complete for the day.
Goldberg then goes on to portray usage of action painting by splattering multiple different colors all over the canvas. This creates a feeling of almost chaos to the order portrayed by the dots. Even the golden designs are splashed with paint in opposition of their detail. This adds a sense of inner confusion or conflict. While the other two elements of the painting, though conflicting, have a sense of order and design. The usage of action painting portrays inner anguish or turmoil with absolutely no rhyme or reason at
Judd highly criticized painting, claiming that painting was not only dead, but also a lie, in the strictest sense, due to the fact it depicts the illusion of 3-dimensions on a 2-dimensional surface, (known as illusionism). After coming to this conclusion, he made the judgement that to paint any longer would be irrelevant, leading Judd to reluctantly give up painting to pursue 3-dimensional art-making, approaching actual space, real materials and importantly, colour. His rule against illusionism is then therefore satisfied in Judd’s 3-dimensional forms actual space by his use of repetition creating a continuation between the spa...
As I enter the Gioconda and Joseph King Gallery at the Norton Museum of Art the first thing that Caught my attention was a painting measuring approximately at 4 ft. by 10 ft. on the side wall in a well- light area. As I further examine the painting the first thing I notice is that it has super realism. It also has color, texture, implied space, stopped time, and that it is a representational piece. The foreign man sitting on the chair next to a bed has a disturbed look on his face and is deep into his own thoughts. It’s as if someone he loved dearly just experienced a tragic and untimely death. He is in early depression. I could feel the pain depicted in his eyes. A book titled The Unquiet Grave lying open on the floor by the unmade bed suggesting something is left unresolved. The scattered photos and papers by the bedside cause redintegration. The picture of Medusa’s head screaming on the headboard is a silent scream filled with anger and pain, yet it cannot be heard. I feel as if I am in the one sitting in the chair and I can feel the anger, and regret.
JoJo is finally back and better than ever. When she was just 13 years old, JoJo had her first major breakthrough in 2004 with “Leave (Get Out)” and “Baby It’s You”. However, it has been over a decade and JoJo spent most of that time battling an extensive label dispute. It is now 2015 and the 24-year-old’s battle is finally over as she was let go from Background Records and has kicked off the year signing under Atlantic Records. On August 21, JoJo officially released three new singles— referred to as a “Tringle” by JoJo herself— to make up for lost time and a sneak-peak of her upcoming third album.
...f the shadows is sprinkled with the orange of the ground, and the blue-violet of the mountains is both mixed with and adjacent to the yellow of the sky. The brushstrokes that carry this out are inspired by the Impressionists, but are more abundant and blunter than those an Impressionist would use.
