Michelangelo
Far and wide, Michelangelo was a major contributing factor to art of the Christian faith and the growth and development of Western art. Born in 1475, Michelangelo grew up in Florence, Italy, where he lived much of his long life. Throughout his life, he created many paintings and sculptures that would slowly shape the world of art. He also was not afraid to create creations that were typically frowned upon in his day and age. Michelangelo was influential to world history through his unique and daring artistic style, as well as having a major influence on modern western art. Michelangelo was interested in artwork from a very young age, showing much more interest in artistic

He was the creator of the statue of David, a statue that came to represent the city of Florence for much of the 1500’s. The statue was known to represent human virtues, such as courage and trust. His “Last Judgment” painting was commissioned by a Pope, but once it was finished, the Pope deemed it offensive to the Christian faith. This demonstrates that Michelangelo truly was a very daring individual. However, the painting is now known as another staple of Renaissance art. The Creation of Adam was also a daring move for the artist; the painting showed God’s anatomy in a way that almost no artists dared to before, afraid that it may be disrespectful or frowned upon. Michelangelo’s most famous painting by far is the Sistine Chapel ceiling paintings, a collection of paintings on the church ceiling that took upwards of four years to complete. The ceiling is now one of the most famous paintings of all time, as well as the most prominent symbol of art in the Christian community. In addition, while not an artwork, Michelangelo helped create fortifications for the city of Florence in 1528 when it came under siege. Florence still fell, which led to Michelangelo leaving Florence for the remainder of his
Michelangelo was born in Caprese, Italy on March 6th 1475. His family was politically prominent as his family had large land property. His father was a banker and was looking to his son to engage in his businesses. As a young boy, he has ambitions of becoming a sculptor, but his father was very discouraging of this. He wanted his son to live up to the family name and take up his father’s businesses. Michelangelo became friends with Francesco Granacci, who introduced him to Domenico Ghirlandio(biography.com). Michelangelo and his father got into a series of arguments until eventually they arranged for him to study under Ghirlandaio at the age of thirteen. Ghirlandaio watched Michelangelo work and recognized his talent for the art and recommended him into an apprenticeship for the Medici family palace studio after only one year of at the workshop. The Medici’s were very rich from making the finest cloths. Lorenzo, which was one of the most famous of the family had a soft side for art and is credited for helping the Italian Renaissance become a time of illustrious art and sculpting. At ...
In Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling Ross King gives a penetrating look into the life of Michelangelo Buonarroti during the four years he spends painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. At a scale of nearly five thousand and eight hundred square feet and almost seventy feet above the ground, this would be an incredible task for the artist. He faces many challenges, mentally and physically, during the process, but still finishes the ceiling in an incredibly short amount of time considering the size of his work. Michelangelo is renowned for his moody temper and reclusive lifestyle. Most people find him to be an extremely difficult person, due partially to his lack of concern for anyone but himself, and to his undaunted stubborn nature. The one man with whom he will despise and contend with all his life was Pope Julius II; he is also the man who commissions him to paint the ceiling. Ross King's purpose in writing this book is to detail Michelangelo's magnificent struggle with personal, political, and artistic difficulties during the painting of the Sistine ceiling. He also gives an engaging portrait of society and politics during the early sixteenth century.
His artwork took sculptures and paintings to another level. While he was sculptor and a painter, he also was a poet. One of my personal favorite quotes by him is, “the greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it”. Michelangelo is saying that we settle; we do not push ourselves. We find contentment in not making a change or challenging the world, but we are okay with hiding behind the norm. Michelangelo did not settle. He performed to his best ability, and he left the world
Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti was born on March 6, 1475 in Caprese, Tuscany. His dad was Lodovico di Buonarrotto and his mother was Fracessca Neri. Michelangelo was also the second of five brothers. His mother was not capable of raising Michelangelo so his dad let a stonecutter’s wife raise him. Sadly, Michelangelo’s mom died when he was six (Bonner Par. 1-13).
Michelangelo Buonarroti is one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance times, as well as one of the greatest of all time. He did was a painter, a sculptor as well as an architect, excelling in all areas from a young age. Michelangelo’s art was a symbol of the Florence people’s cultural and political power and superiority. Michelangelo thought of himself as a divine being, meaning he thought he was perfection and no one could ever compare. To this day through, in terms of his art, this may hold some truth depending mostly on opinion. He created some of the most magnificent, and most sought after pieces of all time. Some of them are still around today for us to witness including Michelangelo’s Pieta, and one of his most famous Michelangelo’s David.

He was born in Caprese, Italy on March 6, 1475 and died in Rome on February 18, 1564. Michelangelo’s early life and work consisted of him becoming an apprentice to Domenico Ghirlandaio, a painter in Florence, at the age of 13, after his father knew that he had no interest in the family business. The painter then moves on and joins Lorenzo de’ Medici’s household, where he learns and studies with the painters and sculptors that lived under the Medici roof. Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475-1564) was an Italian poet, architect, painter and sculptor. Not only was he thought to be the greatest artist during his lifetime but he has also been thought to be one of the greatest artists of all time (Gilbert). The Florence Cathedral asked him to complete an abandoned commission from a giant block of marble, to depict yet another David to be a symbol of Florence, and was to be placed on the gable of the Cathedral. Michelangelo finished the giant 17’ statue in 1504. It never made it up on the Cathedral but instead was placed in the Piazza della Signoria and is now in the Gallery of the Academy of Florence while a replica stands in the square. Like the other two David’s, this statue uses the classic contrapposto stance. Also like Donatello’s, Michelangelo depicted the classical nude but with an athletic physique. Unlike Donatello and Verrocchio’s statues though, which show the hero’s triumph and Goliath’s head at their feet, Michelangelo chose to show David before the battle. He portrays the young warrior with his sling in his left hand over his shoulder and a rock in his right, which he is starting to clench. His head is turned to his left watching the oncoming opponent with an intensity in his gaze. Michelangelo’s David shows the tension before the action with a feeling of pent-up energy like he’s about to explode into action. Because of these

Art in the hands of Leonardo da Vinci was also a science; it created a means for exploring nature and a record of research. Leonardo greatest works was the Mona Lisa, The Virgin of the Rocks, and The Last Supper. While in Florence, he painted “La Gioconda,” but it is best known today as the “Mona Lisa.” The woman mysterious slight smile sparked speculation. During the Renaissance period many believed the woman to be a courtesan, but current research shows that she was Lisa del Giocondo, wife of a Florentine merchant. “The Last Supper,” painting depicts the Passover dinner with Jesus and the Apostles. Leonardo artist abilities shows in the Apostle’s distinct sensitive expression and body language. The art composition in “The Last Supper” has influenced generations of painters. Michelangelo originated creative power, taking on large projects that depicted inspiration on the human body as the channel for emotional expression. Michelangelo’s early sculptures expose a spectacular technical ability to bend the rules of anatomy and proportion in the service of greater power. “The Pietà” and ‘the David” shows Michelangelo’s technical abilities. Michelangelo was considered a sculptor but his best-known work is the giant ceiling fresco of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, Rome. This work is an integrated composition that connects traditional Christian theology with Neoplatonic beliefs. In Perspective Renaissance authors stated that “Incandescent work created by Raphael with unequalled grace and composure was introduced during the Renaissance. It was said that he produced the most imposing perspective compositions, with a kind of culmination of a century of perspective exploration.” Raphael created works that perfectly expressed the classical spirit—harmonious, beautiful, and serene. Raphael’s ultimate design, The School of Athens, was painted in the Vatican at the same
Madonna of Burges is a marble sculpture of Mary and her child Jesus created by the marvelous artist Michelangelo. It was created in a time span of 3 years (1501 – 1504). Michelangelo the painter, sculptor and architect is widely recognized as the most famous and talented artist of the Renaissance era. “David” and “Pieta” statues are among his widely known collection of works, in addition to the “Creation of Adam” painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
Leonardo da Vinci greatly impacted world history by his artwork, inventions, and discoveries in science. Around the world da Vinci has impressed and amazed people by his gift in artwork. Inventions were a common thing that he thought of, and they always surpassed his time period intellectually. Discoveries and new ways of thinking don’t come very often, but under the thoughtful mindset of da Vinci they do, the genius of the 14th century. Leonardo da Vinci, was born in 1452, in Anchiano, Italy during the Age of Discovery.
Michelangelo initially refused the project due to the technical problems presented by a domed ceiling. However, with his belief in the humanistic principle of seeing no limits of outside forces and relying on his inner capabilities of self-invention and development, he found a way and created this masterpiece in a three-year time frame. He signed it “Michelangelo, Sculptor” as a blow to Julius to indicate his true passion and vocation. The fresco has more than 300 religious figures including mythological soothsayers and bible scenes. Michelangelo must have been greatly educated in many areas of learning to produce figures of so many figures from history.
Michelangelo was one of the most famous artists of the Italian Renaissance, “Michelangelo is widely regarded as the most famous artist of the Italian Renaissance. Among his works are the "David" and "Pieta" statues and the Sistine Chapel frescoes” (Biography.com Editors). Michelangelo painted few of the most important paints that were recognized in history and it still remains until today. He was not just a painter, but a sculptor, architect, and poet as well. These painters have impacted the Renaissance time very much.
