Constructivism can be described as effective ‘child-centred development’. This theory relates to observations and scientific study which entails how people learn. The fundamental aspect of this theory is to enable learners to construct their own knowledge and understanding of the world, by experiencing things and reflecting them.
In fact, learners use principles they know already to learn new things, as well as gaining new knowledge which is centred on interaction. It is essential that learners explore, ask questions, and assess what they may know. According to Vygotsky’s theory children were influenced by ‘cultural tools’, for instance language, play, thought and imagination. As such, he strongly believed that these elements enabled children to develop and build their knowledge. He also believed that the development of mind originated, by interacting with a person in the society. Vygotsky pointed out that development can be divided into two levels in regards to the Zone of proximal development. It is vital to point out that Vygotsky’s teaching and learning strategies are used when dealing with children who have special educational needs. Support given to children with special educational needs are referred to as ‘scaffolding’, this occurs when children are able to develop and take part in various activities and gain specific levels of knowledge; this support may be eliminated gradually. Scaffolding should be eliminated gradually, as this enables a child to develop through encouragement which can help them to become independent using the skills and knowledge they have
