Considering Mary Shelley's Frankenstein as an Attack on Masculine Romanticism
I believe that Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is an attack on the
masculine Romanticism, thus, meaning my agreement with Mellor's
assessment. In Shelley's novel, the ambitious Romantic hero, Victor
Frankenstein, challenges the laws of nature by trying to dominate the
role of the females. He attempts to do so by creating artificial life,
however, his attempt to tamper with the "ever-varied powers of
nature", is then the cause for his "destruction". One interpretation
of the novel is that man must keep equilibrium between his ambitious
"pursuit of knowledge" and "the tranquility of his domestic
affections", not allowing one aspect to "interfere" with another.
Shelley structures her novel in a way that Walton's framing tale is
used as a warning to the readers who can relate to masculine
characteristics, telling them to tame their ambition before it's too
late. And through Frankenstein's narrative, Shelley hopes that the
readers can "deduce an apt moral" being that over ambition corrupts.
The characteristics of a masculine Romantic hero consist of a
dominative egocentric personality with huge ambitions to pursue
revolutionary ideas. These characteristics are represented in the
novel through Walton, and Frankenstein. Walton has ideas to "tread a
land never before imprinted by the foot of man". He is also convinced
that his "voyage" can give "all man kind to the last generation", an
"inestimable benefit". Similarly, Frankenstein has ideas to challenge
"the principle of life" and find out "how nature works in her hiding

signifying the light of knowledge's blinding intensity. Light is often
associated with fire; and fire hurts the ones who try to 'penetrate'
it. This then attaches a sense of harm to the light of discovery and
knowledge which the scientists try so hard to grasp on to. Another way
of seeing the association of the light imagery with fire is through
the myth of Prometheus, who suffers sever punishment for introducing
the knowledge of fire to mankind. Like Prometheus, Frankenstein
'tries' to introduce forbidden knowledge to the human race, but fails
and is punished for it. This then leads to the message being that his
hunger for 'glory' only led to his "utter destruction", which was
foreseen during Frankenstein's account of the oak tree that inspired
him to use galvanism to "animate…lifeless matter".
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein explores the downfall of certain human characteristics, set to the backdrop of creation, destruction, and preservation. The subtitle denoted by Shelly herself supports this idea, by relating the fact that the title can be viewed as either Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus. One scholar, Marilyn Butler, also maintains this by noting, "It can be a late version of the Faust Myth"(302). Shelly uses the story of the main character, Victor Frankenstein, to produce the concept of a dooming human characteristic of which Frankenstein states, "I have . . . been blasted in these hopes"(Shelley, 152). The reader finds, as a result of his thirst for knowledge and infatuation with science, Victor creates a living being by whom he has "suffered great and unparalleled misfortunes"(Shelley, 17). Eventually, Victor realizes this self-destructive trait, but he is not able to save himself stating, "I have lost everything, and cannot begin life anew"(Shelley, 16). Although everything in his life that is dear has been lost, Victor is able to convince one in his same position--Robert Walton--to not "lead [his crew] unwillingly to danger"(Shelley, 151). While addressing the concept of characteristic and self-discovery, it is possible to realize that the monster also possesses the characteristics held by both Victor and Walton; except in his learning, the monster is driven to continue to cause destruction. Most important about the thirst for knowledge is that, as a form of human characteristic or downfall, it leads to large, critical pieces of self-discovery. Victor Frankenstein is a scientist whose ambition will be fatal. His story is central to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Nevertheless, Shelley gave a frame to Victor's tale as Frankenstein begins and ends with Captain Walton's letters. In this analysis, I will show that Shelley did not insert the letters by chance, but that they add a deeper dimension to the novel.
In this commentary, I wanted to examine a little further the implications of a point brought up in the presentation on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. They briefly suggested that Victor might occupy a space of idealised masculine freedom; given Victor's less than ideal fate and Mary Shelley's Feminism, such a masculine idealisation becomes highly problematic. Victor holds a privileged social position that allows him a financial and social freedom through which he can choose his occupations at will. In choosing Science, Victor's freedom to experiment holds potential benefit, both for him and for Others. However, I'd suggest that it's Victor's overdetermined sense of individualistic Self that results in a misuse of his freedom and the destruction of his social sphere. Victor's specific type of unfettered individualism results in the ultimate danger of individualism: he shakes off the shackles of social responsibility both literally, in his solitude, and metaphorically, in his failure to acknowledge the possibility that his actions might have some social impact. His ultimate and most dangerous freedom lies in that he is free to consider only his own ambition.

Throughout many years the world has been unified socially with one similarity: the culture of a patriarchal society. A patriarchal society is a social society in which males are the primary figures of authority, owning property, and occupying political leadership. When such important roles are taken by men, women, on the other hand are expected to be obedient, silent, and useless (except in chores). History has numerous examples in books, morals and real life in which women are known through culture to be unimportant. A classic novel, Frankenstein, also demonstrates this fact about women. Although the women in Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, can be portrayed as being strong, they are mostly represented as weak throughout the novel because they are treated as property, helpless during troubled times, and dependent on men.
The theme of masculinity is strong throughout the novel, and I will finish with what may be the strongest example of masculinity of all, although it is not a favourable one. Perhaps the character of the monster represents the flaw in masculinity in the society of that day, created without the use of a woman, and is an example of the dangers of a society without woman. And I feel that Shelley was perhaps manipulating the masculine identities in the novel to show the flaws that such attitudes towards women can create, and persuade her audience that a society without women would be disastrous.

Shelley questions and interacts with the classic Romantic tropes, causing this rethink of a novel that goes deeper into societal history than it appears. For example, the introduction of Gothic ideas to Frankenstein challenges the typical stereotyped assumptions of Romanticism, giving new meaning and context to the novel. Mary Shelley challenges Romanticism by highlighting certain aspects of the movement while questioning and interacting with the Romantic movement through her writing.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, explores the monstrous and destructive affects of obsession, guilt, fate, and man’s attempt to control nature. Victor Frankenstein, the novel’s protagonist and antihero, attempts to transcend the barriers of scientific knowledge and application in creating a life. His determination in bringing to life a dead body consequently renders him ill, both mentally and physically. His endeavors alone consume all his time and effort until he becomes fixated on his success. The reason for his success is perhaps to be considered the greatest scientist ever known, but in his obsessive toil, he loses sight of the ethical motivation of science. His production would ultimately grieve him throughout his life, and the consequences of his undertaking would prove disastrous and deadly. Frankenstein illustrates the creation of a monster both literally and figuratively, and sheds light on the dangers of man’s desire to play God.
