The Lobster Aside, There’s More to Consider
David Foster Wallace’s (I’ll be referring to him as DFW) 2004 article, “Consider The Lobster”, succeeded in making do as the title suggests, to consider a mere lobster. I’d admittedly not put much thought into things such as lobsters being cooked alive and whether or not it’s right or wrong. Yet even after reading DFW’s essay, and after plenty of time and consideration, I don’t believe it’s wrong to cook and eat lobster, or any other animal for that matter. Now people may call me ignorant for thinking that, or maybe they’ll agree with me, but my belief that lobsters are of less moral importance than humans is one I hold true to; however, that’s not the point, because I don’t believe DFW’s goal was to get people to consider lobsters or cows or any animal product specifically, but to consider absolutely everything.

DFW states, towards the end of his essay, that “...I believe animals are less morally important than human beings…”, this shows that even he, himself, came to his original conclusion that he’d had before considering the lobster, that they taste good and are acceptable to eat.
Now, for a second it seems like a waste of time to write an article about consideration when the consideration doesn’t even change your opinion, but it’s not a waste of time, because when I read this essay I didn’t believe it was for the purpose of convincing people not to eat lobsters, or to inform you on the differences between humans’ and lobsters’ emotional and physical components, I believe the essay was written for us to consider our day to day lives
more. If I’d never taken the time to contemplate the killing of animals for food, what else had I skipped over uninterestedly? I have a list in my head even as I write this paper: why some kids don’t like talking to people, why I shouldn’t have a second can of soda, why I can wear a different outfit every day of the week, things we usually ignore or take for granted. We so so often take things for granted in life, and DFW’s essay really opened up my mind to that. I’d never considered that the reason I have clothes is because I have two parents that work every day to earn money for me, and use that money to buy clothes for me that an underprivileged child overseas might have made to earn a few cents for his or her family. I’d never considered that maybe my parents seemed overly unfair and judgemental today because they’re stressed about paying bills that keep me under a roof. I struggle to consider much more than myself, which is completely normal. I fully support the notion that selfishness is human nature, and I think that’s DFW’s point. Until we stop to consider ourselves, we notice other people’s inconsiderate behavior while ignoring our own. Many people will only look at DFW’s essay skin deep, stopping at the morality of boiling lobsters, but I’m grateful for the not-so-subliminal messaging that we as humans need to consider others and other things (whether it changes your opinion or not). So my response to David Foster Wallace is this: thanks for the advice, a whole lot of people need it.

The state of Maine is a huge tourist spot known for it’s rocky coastline and seafood cuisine, especially lobster. Annually, the state holds the “Maine Lobster Festival” every summer, and is a popular lucrative attraction including carnival rides and food booths. The center of attention for this festival is, unsurprisingly, lobster. The author of the article “Consider the Lobster”, David Foster Wallace, mainly uses logos and pathos, and explores the idea of being put into the lobsters perspective by describing how the cooking process is done and informing us on the animal’s neurological system in a very comprehensible way. At the end of his article, he explains, “I believe animals are less morally important than human beings; and when it comes to defending such a belief, even to myself, I have to acknowledge that (a) I have an obvious selfish interest in this belief, since I like to eat certain kinds of animals and want to be able to keep doing it, and (b) I have not succeeded in working out any sort of personal ethical system in which the belief is truly defensible instead of just selfishly convenient.” (64) Because Wallace does not state his open opinion, one may argue his article is less persuasive. Wallace's approach to persuade the readers differs from most due to his abundance of information he presents on both sides of the topic. Although Wallace states both sides of the debate, instead of solely focusing on his opinion, he gives the reader an opportunity to make an educated decision based on the facts. The documentary Blackfish directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, leaves the viewer with many different emotions. This documentary follows the life of Tilikum, a captured killer whale who is forced to preform for SeaLand. The director uses different interviews from people who have worked with Tilikum or have seen him attack people during the shows. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, has said that swimming with and training killer whales is not safe at all and should not be done. They believe it is a very high risk to the human working with the whale.
When settlers first came to America, lobster was considered a poor man’s food. The lobsters were so abundant at that time that many people felt that they were competing with them for space on the shore. The settlers felt that the lobster had no nutritional value. At that time both Native Americans and settlers used the lobster as fertilizer for their fields and as bait to catch other fish. Lobster was so disdained that it was given to prisoners, indentured servants, and children. This was such a common practice that in Massachusetts many servants and prisoners had it put into their contract that they could not be fed lobster more than two times a week.
Rhetorical Analysis of “The Pleasures of Eating” by Wendell Berry In the article by Wendell Berry titled “The Pleasures of Eating” he tries to persuade the readers of the necessity and importance of critical thinking and approach to choosing meals and owning responsibility for the quality of the food cooked. There is no simple answer to the social dilemmas facing our society in the present day. One could spend days arguing reasons in support or opposition for issues such as the morality of abortion, the existence of free will, or the feasibility of universal ethics. In Michael S. Gazzaniga 's book, The Ethical Brain, these controversial topics are discussed using a brain-based philosophy of life, commonly known as Neuroethics. Although there are several advantages to solving such predicaments using a scientific approach, it is equally important to consider the personal and social implications of an ethical decision. For this reason, I partially agree with the statement that human beings should use Neuroethics to deal ethically with social issues
She was able to evoke emotions by her choice of negatively charged words towards the other author, Stephen Budiansky, and his work, Math Lessons for Locavores. By the end of the article, the reader developed strong negative views concerning the other article solely on Trueman’s diction and her tone. By writing, “Throw in a bunch of dubious and/or irrelevant statistics that appear to be truly locally sourced-i.e., pulled out of your own behind,” and “What’s so maddening about sloppy op-eds like this is that they give fodder to folks who hate the very notion that their food choices have any consequences beyond their own waistlines and bank balances”, Trueman expresses her dislike of Budiansky’s thoughst on the topic. She describes his article in such a dismissive way that her audiences adopts the same views as her. As a whole, her way of writing creates an overall negative tone towards the article being criticized. While doing this, she also points out flaws in his argument and exposes his faults in reasoning. As a result, his argument becomes invalid in the eyes of the readers and they are left with a clear winning perspective on the issue of the Local Food Movement. Kerry Truman's use of pathos in her critical analysis of Budiansky’s Math Lessons for Locavores was successful in the aspect that she evokes emotions in her
Throughout the essay, Berry logically progresses from stating the problem of the consumer’s ignorance and the manipulative food industry that plays into that ignorance, to stating his solution where consumers can take part in the agricultural process and alter how they think about eating in order to take pleasure in it. He effectively uses appeals to emotion and common values to convince the reader that this is an important issue and make her realize that she needs to wake up and change what she is doing. By using appeals to pathos, logos, and ethos, Berry creates a strong argument to make his point and get people to change how they attain and eat food.
Michael Pollan presents many convincing arguments that strengthen his position on whether slaughtering animals is ethical or not. He believes that every living being on this planet deserves an equal amount of respect regardless of it being an animal or human, after all humans are also animals. “An Animal’s place” by Michael Pollan is an opinionated piece that states his beliefs on whether animals should be slaughtered and killed to be someone’s meal or not. In his article, Pollan does not just state his opinions as a writer but also analyzes them from a reader’s point of view, thus answering any questions that the reader might raise. The lobsters are complex creatures, as David Foster Wallace explains in the essay, and the people that are going to the festival are making this complex creature so easy to kill. Wallace is able to validate this argument by using their complexity of life and the simplicity of their death to show the paradox that the festival has created explaining, “Taxonomically speaking, a lobster is a marine crustacean of the family Homaridae, characterized by five pairs of jointed legs, the first pair terminating in large pincerish claws used for subduing prey” (Wallace 55). Then later explaining, “Be apprised, though, that the Main Eating Tent’s suppers come in Styrofoam trays, and the soft drinks are iceless and flat” (Wallace 55). This paradox that Wallace brings to the attention to his audience show that these articulate and graceful creatures are being disgraced by the festival goers by being served on Styrofoam trays and served with unappealing beverages. It is no coincidence that two things that are really explained is the anatomy of the lobster and how complex the makeup of the lifeform is and the simplicity of the death of the lobster. By explaining these two things in depth, he is able to show how ridiculous and unfair he feels that killing and eating the lobster is. In this paper I will look at the argument made by James Rachels in his paper, The Moral Argument for Vegetarianism supporting the view that humans should be vegetarians on moral grounds. I will first outline the basis of Rachels’ argument supporting vegetarianism and his moral objection to using animals as a food source and critique whether it is a good argument. Secondly, I will look at some critiques of this kind of moral argument presented by R. G. Frey in his article, Moral Vegetarianism and the Argument from Pain and Suffering. Finally, I will show why I support the argument made by Frey and why I feel it is the stronger of the two arguments and why I support it.
