Conformity destroys diversity, stunts societal development, and impedes personal growth. It is a blind following that is not preceded by conscious evaluation for merit and validity. This phenomenon can develop on both large and small scales. Groups can develop damaging mindsets that people impulsively conform to and individuals can be inclined to forsake their personal urges to conform to those around them; ultimately, conformity produces unhappy individuals that don’t live as they would desire to do so.

It can be correct or incorrect. Within a group, perhaps the correct course of action for an individual is to trust the prowess of his/her peers. Teamwork can only be accomplished through interpersonal trust. Additionally, as an individual, bad decisions can be averted through positive peer pressure. Author William F. Buckley Jr. recalls an anecdote in one of his writings of a time when his nonconformity was inappropriate. Buckley was waiting in line at a ski-repair shop and one of the two employees was sitting and chatting with a friend instead of assisting the line of customers (William Buckley). As the “minutes ticked on” (Buckley), nobody did anything. Attempting to do the correct thing, Buckley “broke from [his] place in line”, “marched to the counter”, and “icily” confronted the idle man. The middle-aged employee responded “‘I am sorry, sir … I am not supposed to move. I have just had a heart attack’” (Buckley). The rest of the employees, in their patient conformity, gave him looks of “resentment” as the employee was swiftly urged into a helicopter that would take him to the hospital (Buckley). In certain situations, conformity is a sign that a group’s consensus is valid. Conformity, whether positive or negative, should be analyzed for its situational validity. Many situations in which groups and individuals conform to detrimental ideas involve a lack of evaluation of such. Thoughtless acts of conformity often bring unhappiness due to suppressed opinions and negative consequences. Choosing an action contrary to personal convictions causes people to live in discontentment.
